Why do people like reform?

1000 replies

TheGoogleMum · 02/05/2025 09:23

I haven't been keeping very up to date with politics. I usually vote Labour. I don't really understand the popularity of reform, could anyone explain it to me?
As far as I'm aware Farage doesn't actually do anything when he wins a seat somewhere so I'm not convinced they'll actually do anything? Is it just a protest vote that's gone a bit far?

Reform (and I am from the area where they won the by election) have allowed people to openly say what they think about things. The racist bile on the local Facebook pages is scary. Some of these are people I know.

Ladyymuck · 02/05/2025 17:38

I’m pro-EU and couldn’t vote for NF and Reform, however, I understand why people have. Everyone, myself included have lost trust in the main parties and feeling disillusioned with politics. Reform are capitalising on that, the recent results have shown that. I personally don’t think Reform are the answer but I honestly don’t know which party are.

caringcarer · 02/05/2025 17:38

PlutoCat · 02/05/2025 17:04

He also heard that Labour tried to smeer him by saying he'd charge UK taxpayers £10k to have their appendix out. He has said numerous times the NHS will remain free at point of use

And has he said how the NHS will be funded under Reform? Because that is the devil in this particular detail.

Same as now from taxes. When we don't have to spend billions on housing illegal migrants less money will be wasted.

Nope. He said to Beth Rigby that he does not want the NHS funded from general taxation, but for it to remain free at the point of delivery.

So that means health insurance. There is no other way. Farage, naturally, did not wish to be pressed on that point, though.

After reading all the nasty posts on this thread I'd like to say congratulations to all the newly elected Reform and independent councillors and Reform mayor and MP. A bit less sneering hatred from LabCon politicians, supporters and voters might have seen a different result.

Yes I partly agree (although don't think less sneering would lead to a different vote as alot of voters despise Labour and the tories for ruining the country me included). It was such a shock after the Brexit vote to realise that alot of the privileged, wealthy middle class despise the white worrying class (and any minorities who don't hold the "correct" views) and think they're ignorant despite said middle class regularly displaying their own ignorance and narrowmindness.

Good, maybe we can copy the best health systems in the world like France. No other country has copied our dismal model.

MrsKeats · 02/05/2025 17:53

Because they are thick racists.

123H · 02/05/2025 17:57

Exactly PlutoCat👏

Farage will sneakily use the phrase ‘free at the point delivery’ to con people into thinking everything will be the same as it is now.

Of course you won’t have to hand over the £30k for your emergency C-section on the operating table, ergo ‘free at the point of delivery’, but you’ll still have to pay for it, either via private health insurance (if they’ll cover it) … or just cough up one way or another.

One can only imagine how much long term cancer treatment will cost.

Menopausalsourpuss · 02/05/2025 18:01

I do think to some extent we get the leaders we deserve (Labour) when you see the standard of debate on here - hyperbole, strawman, childish talking points copied from the BBC as people seem to be unable to think or research for themselves. If you watch political discussion programmes from the 80s and 90s on YouTube the standard of debate and interview quality is so much higher than now - what has changed?

I would probably be categorised as privileged, wealthy and middle class by most, but I absolutely despise what I call the metropolitan elite and their vile attitudes towards those they see as working class and lesser. Like you I blame tories and Labour for the mess we're now in, but I hold special distaste for the holier than thou lefties who would out fascist Pol Pot if given the chance.

ProfessionalOverthinker1 · 02/05/2025 18:08

I’ve always leaned more to the right than the left, but at this point, no political party in the UK is worth a damn. The country is in serious decline, and no one in charge seems willing or able to do anything about it. Weak leadership, no accountability, and no real solutions just empty talk and political theatre.

Illegal migration is completely out of control, and the government has utterly failed to get a grip on it. In my area, people are starting to believe, rightfully, that the homes we’re constantly promised will go to illegal migrants, not to struggling British families who’ve done everything right. It’s disgraceful that people who enter the country illegally are put up in hotels, fed, and clothed at public expense, while our own people sleep on the streets. It’s a national embarrassment.

And then there’s the crushing weight of taxes and the cost of living. It’s not just about how much you earn it’s about how little you’re left with once the government is done taking its share. Everything is taxed to death: your income, your spending, your energy, your fuel. The basics! food, housing, heating have become unaffordable for many families. Supporting a family today feels like a constant uphill battle, where you’re punished for working hard and still expected to pick up the tab for a bloated, broken system that gives nothing back.

People aren’t living, they’re surviving. You can work full-time, play by the rules, and still struggle to cover your bills while watching others game the system and get rewarded for it. And no one in power is willing to do a thing to change that.

Crime is through the roof. Many areas are now plagued by anti-social behaviour. People are getting mugged for their phones and watches, assaulted on trains, and harassed in public and the response? No deterrents. No consequences.

And then there’s the woke madness that’s infected almost every institution in the country. We’ve gone from protecting free speech to punishing it. You can’t open your mouth without someone acting offended, demanding apologies, or trying to cancel you. People are being shouted down or even investigated for saying things that were considered normal five years ago. Schools are pushing ideology instead of education. Public bodies are more interested in ticking diversity boxes than doing their actual jobs. It’s no longer about equality it’s about control, censorship, and silencing anyone who doesn’t toe the line.

We’re raising a generation terrified to speak, terrified to think differently, terrified to offend. That’s not progress that’s cultural decay.

And let’s be honest—the weather’s miserable most of the year too. Put all of this together and ask yourself: why would anyone actually want to stay here? If people were offered the same job security and pay elsewhere, I’ve no doubt most would leave tomorrow.

I don’t know if Reform is the solution, maybe what the UK actually needs is a hard reset, a reform, ironically. Because right now, the system is broken from the ground up, and the people running it are either too out of touch or too weak to fix it.

Every other country in the developed world has an insurance based health system, all of which are much better than the NHS, which is frankly shite and at times like something in the third world. What's wrong exactly with moving to an insurance based system which delivers better healthcare than we have now?

Is being put up in a 4 star hotel not being housed? Or how about being given a flat to live in under the Serco scheme? Is that not being housed?

I keep seeing privileged people like you making this identical point so you must have read it in the Guardian/seen it on the BBC. To all sane people claiming asylum from France is not legitimate and is not the gotcha you think. I'm sure Reform will put a stop to it once they get in🙂

I suspect voters don't vote for Reform. They just vote against the other parties. Labour have failed already in controlling immigration which is a top issue for voters. Net zero is going to bankrupt the country and ruin the countryside. And Rachel Reeves isn't the sort of Chancellor we need for these times. So "anyone but Labour/Conservatives" is probably why Reform are doing so well.

Yes the net zero is ridiculous

We put them up in hotels at £145 per night often for 6 months we hilst they make an application for asylum. All the time in the hotel they have no legal status.

Yes, I completely agree with you. I was laughing at Maitri108's tired trope about the rubber boat people.
