Why do people like reform?

TheGoogleMum · 02/05/2025 09:23

I haven't been keeping very up to date with politics. I usually vote Labour. I don't really understand the popularity of reform, could anyone explain it to me?
As far as I'm aware Farage doesn't actually do anything when he wins a seat somewhere so I'm not convinced they'll actually do anything? Is it just a protest vote that's gone a bit far?

Here's another reason why people like Reform:

Reform UK could take the government to court to prevent migrants being housed in areas where it now controls the local council, party chairman Zia Yusuf told the BBC.

Yusuf said his party had pledged to "resist" housing asylum seekers in Reform-controlled areas and it would use "every instrument of power available", including judicial reviews, to fulfil its pledge.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c77npgv06xpo.amp

How much is that going to cost the taxpayer and where is the money going to come from?

boys3 · 04/05/2025 19:12

Indeed @Maitri108 and apparently in Lincolnshire Andrea Jenkyn wants to cut staff by 10% - not the ones supporting any judicial reviews presumably. Though Reform clearly won the County in Lincolnshire things like Planning are district functions- none of which are Reform led, or possibly even have any Reform cllrs.

Losingtheplot2016 · 04/05/2025 20:25

I’ve just started working in a farming community and people all
want to vote for reform. I work with people who have several jobs and work really hard with a view that they wouldn’t want to have benefits. They have a really negative view of any who doesn’t work unless they are old or physically disabled.

it feels like they believe they work hard and want to keep their own money. They tend to be socially conservative so turned off by stuff like trans debate.

It was open for less than a year and is no longer 4*. It will have been stripped of any niceties.

This is a hotel near me which is currently housing asylum seekers. It is 4 star.

That looks more like a Premier Inn to me. It’s nothing like any 4* I’ve ever stayed in.

Comefromaway · 04/05/2025 20:31

one of the last reviews

“The newer wing felt claustrophobic as if too many small rooms were packed in. It still had a feeling of a former care home atmosphere with a ramp. There was a very small window with no view.”

It's not French policy to house asylum seekers in tents.

Some Reform members are calling for asylum seekers to be taken out of hotels and placed in tents. That's not what happens in France. They have accommodation specifically for asylum seekers; they're not automatically placed in tents.

They don’t place them in tents, they just don’t provide any accommodation & so they have no choice. I would imagine it might encourage them to come to the UK where they probably will get put up in a hotel & fed. So I guess if they know that they would likely be stuck in a tent over in the UK (where it rains even more) then it would be pointless risking their lives crossing the channel.

The hotels near me which house migrants were previously pretty nice places where most people would not be able to afford to stay over. The hotel we stayed on our wedding night seems to be currently in use for this purpose. It’s now got security in hi vis at the door. It’s in a really nice part of town. I feel a bit conflicted as some of my students in school are in hotels & obviously I want to see them safe (they are lovely). However it’s a bit bonkers that they are being housed in hotels where your average worker would not be able to afford. We both work & when kids were tiny could only ever afford YHA, camping, Premier Inn. So I can see why people are feeling pissed off. I think voting Reform is making a statement. The main stream parties probably need to do something about the numbers coming over otherwise we could end up with Farage in Downing Street (which isn’t a great idea).

Comefromaway · 05/05/2025 13:00

The hotels near me used to be nice but had been run down before the change of use.

what they get are very different to a normal guest. Communal areas are used for admin/welfare. They don’t have the nice little tea trays and lounge areas or other facilities or buffet breakfast. No plush bedding and room service. It’s the basics only.

It's social engineering. Here is the prediction from 1974 United nation assembly where Algerian president has given the warning to Europe.

It took a while for the far right to make an appearance.

Which costs the UK taxpayers £3 billion per year.

You come across as a fascist. You are spouting far right conspiracy theories such as the Great Replacement theory. You're a racist trying to sow division and hate.

I think one clear.answer to the reason people vote reform is highlighted on this thread. A refusal to accept there is a problem and that people cannot believe the evidence of their own eyes. People asking for "evidence" that four star hotels are used as if they have never kept up with the news in the last year and are unable to use Google. An inability to accept that people coming in may not behave themselves as one would wish. An inability to accept that the UK system is a massive lure to the world's diaspora.

And if the Labour Party approaches the issue with a similar outlook then things are not going to improve and people will be more and more angry and look for alternatives. And that will be the fault of the Conservatives and Labour. I am politically homeless at the moment but find the gaslighting of the left n immigration fairly frustrating. As do clearly a majority of the people intending to vote looking at current opinion polls. 😬

Abso-bloody-lutely. The name calling, goady requests for ' evidence', which when provided isn't enough or is from the ' wrong' source, the childish petulance... Unbelievable. The irony is, these posters will drive people into the very arms of a party they are trying to discredit. Lunacy. And yes, I understand your frustration - I too, am politically homeless.

What would your view be of immegration, is there any level that you would feel is running too high or are you happy with the 1.2m a year that it presently is?
I think that the English were very happy at a rate of 20,000 a year, like under Blair but the problem came with mass migration from 2020

Meanwhile elsewhere Andrea strikes again. She just wants competent people. Nothing wrong with that aside it begging the question as to why if competence was a key quality would she have stood for Mayor in the first place. Perplexing.

Yet in our town, a modern city centre Travelodge has been turned into an immigrant hotel, must be less than a decade old, so won't be "run down", and it's in a prime city centre location. There's another "naice" hotel where we had our wedding reception that was also turned into an immigrant hotel, likewise certainly wasn't run down.

Likewise the well positioned Holiday Inn right next to Wembley Stadium is said to be an immigrant hotel. Again, fairly modern and it wasn't run down when I stayed there a few years ago.

BIossomtoes · 05/05/2025 20:05

If any of these hotels were able to make more money from commercial use it’s highly unlikely they’d enter into Home Office contracts. A Travelodge is hardly luxurious.

I've read a couple of your posts now which really show your privilege. Referring to hotels as, in your eyes, ' hardly luxurious' or ' not like the 4 star hotels I've stayed in' says an awful lot of your position in life. Perhaps spare a thought for those without the cushioning of financial stability, like the economically disadvantaged whose towns are being torn apart from housing asylum seekers. It's very easy to cast judgement or resort to name calling when you're not directly affected and seeing things through the prism of privilege. A little self awareness wouldn't go amiss.
