Why do people like reform?

I haven't been keeping very up to date with politics. I usually vote Labour. I don't really understand the popularity of reform, could anyone explain it to me?
As far as I'm aware Farage doesn't actually do anything when he wins a seat somewhere so I'm not convinced they'll actually do anything? Is it just a protest vote that's gone a bit far?

I've read a couple of your posts now which really show your privilege. Referring to hotels as, in your eyes, ' hardly luxurious' or ' not like the 4 star hotels I've stayed in' says an awful lot of your position in life. Perhaps spare a thought for those without the cushioning of financial stability, like the economically disadvantaged whose towns are being torn apart from housing asylum seekers. It's very easy to cast judgement or resort to name calling when you're not directly affected and seeing things through the prism of privilege. A little self awareness wouldn't go amiss.

Hope you feel better after that. I haven’t resorted to name calling - or insulting anyone. I guess you’re going to tell me now that Travelodges aren’t budget hotels?

Comefromaway · 05/05/2025 21:30

I stay in Travelodges. A well run one with good staff is basic but great. One run as an asylum seekers hostel absolutely will not be.

Today Farage has actually said he wants to get rid of the NHS....that's it folks right there. Forget free healthcare...you'll be paying for trips to the doctors and hospitals. If you get cancer you'll be dead within 6 months unless your policy includes treatment.

It will be like Dentists....walk in and walk out minus about 1000 pounds

Better? Not at all. Sickened actually, that the very left who I used to pin my colours to, as the party for the working class person, has resorted to punching down at the very people it used to champion.

It depends. I spent several weeks in the Halifax one for work. It’s in a converted mill and it’s fantastic. Equally I spent a night in the one at Scotch Corner, let’s just say I wouldn’t go back.

I haven’t been to the dentist since my youngest child was 12 months old (he’s now 21) because of the cost.

I can now afford it but I fear it’s too late.

I fear for the future of healthcare.

I’m not “the left”. I’m an individual who doesn’t think it appalling that asylum seekers are housed in budget hotels.

I'd prefer to sleep in a skip. Awful hotels, dreadful breakfasts....can't stand buffet style food. I want my breakfast cooked and brought to me. I like kippers or boiled eggs.

Sometimes your better off finding a good bed and breakfast or family run hotel. I stay in a lovely little hotel in Ballymena sometimes...kippers and porridge is amazing 80 quid a night including breakfast for the gal and myself

I went after many years spent about 4000 sorting a few teeth out.

You’ll be lucky! There’s no breakfast at all in a Travelodge!

how are Reform going to fund this utopia? I've read about new taxes on foreign workers but won't this foreign workers just not come? Massive cuts to government spending? what are they going to cut?

They’re going to cut this net zero bollocks and DEI crap .

dubsie · 05/05/2025 21:44

I'm sure a stayed at one in York and it served food....

And your NHS as well....I know what I'd prefer....we've got no schools or hospitals but hey they cut all this DEI crap.... whoop whoop

It amazes me that people have become so tribal that they will cheer on as a city worker takes a hammer to the NHS and they can't see how bad that is going to be for them.

By 'DEI crap ' do you mean the Equality Act?

Comefromaway · 05/05/2025 21:47

Some Travelodges have a breakfast buffet (nit as good as Premier Inn but decent) some only offer overpriced breakfast boxes (cereal box, muffin, piece of fruit). Spoons is usually better value if there is one nearby.

BIossomtoes · 05/05/2025 21:47

Isn’t DEI American?

Comefromaway · 05/05/2025 21:49

Yes, in the UK it generally means making reasonable adjustments for people with a disability, or putting things in place for pregnant women, or making sure no one with a protected characteristic is discriminated against.

dubsie · 05/05/2025 21:53

So employers won't need to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people....god it gets worse. How can people cheer on this stuff. If life ain't hard enough and a man worth millions takes away basic humanity for a disabled person....I'm ashamed.

Maitri108 · 05/05/2025 21:56

BIossomtoes · 05/05/2025 21:47

Yes. It's 'woke'. In the UK I believe they're talking about discrimination laws and inclusion.

Comefromaway · 05/05/2025 22:02

N terms of local councils it could mean services aimed at certain demographics so a youth worker running a scheme to keep young black boys off the streets or a series of coaching sessions at the leisure centre to encourage more girls into sport.

Comefromaway · 05/05/2025 22:08

Or a support worker running a group for particular disabilities.

Comefromaway · 05/05/2025 22:19

I wonder if schemes like this will be targeted for example

Although that fundamental preventative work has hugely reduced since 2010 - with all the obvious consequences. Not sure how much more there is that Reform could cut / stop.

The National Audit Office has some chlling figures. Spending on prevention in Childrens Services did not just fall in real terms over the past ten years, but most shockingly it fell in absolute terms.

Local government financial sustainability - NAO report

Pressured public services and delays to reform the funding system are contributing to local authorities’ finances becoming unsustainable.

Do you mean the expression or the concept? I work in UK public sector and we call it EDI.

I remember 20 years ago, firms had similar initiatives called corporate social responsibility. It’s evolved from that, in my opinion.
