Why do people like reform?

1000 replies

TheGoogleMum · 02/05/2025 09:23

I haven't been keeping very up to date with politics. I usually vote Labour. I don't really understand the popularity of reform, could anyone explain it to me?
As far as I'm aware Farage doesn't actually do anything when he wins a seat somewhere so I'm not convinced they'll actually do anything? Is it just a protest vote that's gone a bit far?

I mean, I wasn’t saying people are right, more that by overlooking this most basic motivation the major parties will continue to lose ground to those that encourage people to look after their own interests first.
We are knee deep in 80’s nostalgia and Farage does a decent Thatcher impersonation, keep an eye out for 15% mortgage rates, coming soon

Reform are so popular now they can't all be "thick racists" as one poster put it. I do get why people might be sick of labour and conservative but I'm struggling with reform being the answer. I have a sneaky suspicion that their popularity will continue and they'll be the next government though! So I guess we'll find out

They have one new seat in Parliament and control of a handful of councils.

There is a loooooong way to go before the next GE. Whether Farage can hold it all together till then is doubtful.

I think you're right.

It's a good point. People don't seem to care about others anymore: the NHS, people on disability benefits, the vulnerable. The NHS and welfare state was meant to look after everyone in society and society agreed by paying towards it.

Now people want to get health insurance and pay for themselves. They want lower taxes despite the consequences.

I noticed that for weeks before and after the last election, the right wing press was full of tips and tricks on how to hide your cash. Then people complain about nothing working.

I really don't want to take your bait (again!) but things worked pretty well in the 80s and 90s (not sure if you're old enough to remember as I am) when we had 15 million less people. We paid alot less tax, could get a doctors appointment police were efficient and we could all afford to rent or buy a house. They're is no evidence that giving the incompetent wasters in govt more of our money will result in a better run country or "things working" which is why we want to stop them stealing our money to spend on their madcap schemes.

It was not meant to be an international service though

BIossomtoes · 02/05/2025 20:51

We paid alot less tax

No,we didn’t. The lowest the basic rate reached was 25%, it was 33% when I started work.

What madcap schemes have Labour wasted money on?

By madcap schemes do you mean public services?

Comefromaway · 02/05/2025 20:57

I honestly can’t believe that two friends, both with children with SEN have become Reform voters. Forage thinks their kids are over diagnosed. Goodness knows what will become of services for SEN

Paying high tax is not just about the % but also allowances, NI VAT rates etc. In the 80s and 90s very few people paid the top rate of tax as it genuinely was for higher earners whereas now record numbers are in the higher band (and there is an even higher one for those on £100k plus). Council tax (rates) was alot lower and so was VAT.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head!

Quite ironic isn’t it that the poster was saying Reform voters lack critical thinking skills….

Masses of quangos, net zero (which in imo is mad as we just make things in other countries and ship them here which uses MORE CO2, and we even import wood pellets from US while sorting on loads of coal etc)., putting loads of small cos out of business as we have one of the highest energy costs in the world, paying landlords to rent to illegal immigrants, paying Mauritius to give them land we own whilst ignoring the indigenous people, paying benefits to foreigners, paying 5million healthy people to sit on benefits whilst importing yet more low skilled people. The list goes on and on and on.

I understand why you don't want to pay tax. Do you think by paying less tax, as Reform are promising, that society will be better?

I don’t think labour have invented any quangos - in fact they are getting rid of a big one _NHS England.
Most local authorities have licensing schemes now for private landlords and part of their duty is to check immigration status so I don’t think it’s true that we are paying people to house illegal immigrants. As for net zero if we don’t do something we will have half the world living here as the other half will be uninhabitable if for no other reason. I find it astonishing that no govt has invested in solar power - it seems a complete no brainer. Finally it seems we are going to insist on new builds having solar. Should have done it 20 years ago.

The majority get refugee status. I think everyone wants to stop people coming on boats. It's obviously very difficult.

They’ve got to cross loads of countries before they even get to France, never mind the UK. Action really needs to be taken much earlier in their journey. I’ve seen stuff online about a weird spike in migrants coming via Belarus, then trying to move on through Poland, Germany, and France. The main roadblock seems to be Poland, they’ve got a metal fence along the border and aren’t shy about using water cannons and tear gas 😬 here is video evidence for anyone interested -

Some are still trying the route through Sicily too. I’ve got family there, and they say Lampedusa is in really rough shape. It’s such a short boat ride from parts of Africa.

"If we don't do something..". Unfortunately there's nothing we can do that will have any effect whatsoever given China's habit of building coal.fired power stations. So we may as well not ruin ourselves trying quite so drastically to.get to "net zero" whatever that is in real life/outside Ed Milliband's brain.

I think lots of people sort of hear what they want to. SEN is over diagnosed so if you cut out marginal cases there will be more resources for children who really need / deserve help like mine.

Im sure there’s lots of civil servants who voted Trump who didn’t think they’d be labelled inefficient and ousted at the first opportunity.

Well, my life will be better, personally. We can only walk in our own shoes in life.

Maitri108 · 02/05/2025 21:31

@ProfessionalOverthinker1 Of course action needs to be taken earlier but that's entirely dependent on what other countries are willing to do to stop them. Once they apprehend the asylum seekers, what happens for example?

I watched the footage and it was endearing to see Russia talking about international law. Those were the days...

This is exactly the point I'm making, this I'm all right Jack attitude.

Who cares about the elderly, the vulnerable, the sick, the poor, the homeless.

It's interesting that Reform supporters talk about the British helping the British - to many that means helping yourself.

Thanks for illustrating my point.

If there weren’t so many people coming from overseas perhaps there wouldn’t be so much homelessness or pressure on the services

I think it is totally unfair that the young people living here can’t afford to rent or buy housing

Then the government need to look at long term strategies to reduce immigration.

Homelessness had a massive uptick within short order of the tories gaining power in 2010. I’d not long moved abroad, and when I returned the year after there were visibly more rough sleepers on the streets. Many mental health crisis services were shut down very rapidly within this period also.
