Surely if he moves the manufacturing to the US the price of some goods will go up because American workers earn more than Chinese or Taiwanese workers.

For now...

This will encourage businesses to set up US plants and create jobs.

Unlikely. It's not cost effective and setting up plants takes years and years and years.

This is really obvious for anyone except the most powerful man elected in the US

Which British phone should I buy next? What about chocolate - I like chocolate, but the beans are a bugger to grow here. I'm looking forward to quiet nights in with only iPlayer and ITVx to watch with none of that Netflix or Amazon stuff. Who wants all those foreign programmes?

I’m good with the BBC, never wanted Netflix.

Screenshot of Trump and his Batshit Board.

It reminds me of the old Bruce Forsyth ‘Play Your Cards Right’ - higher, higher, lower, nothing for a pair in this game.

Is anyone watching this Trump car crash?

Country’s illnesses are too complex to be treated “ conservatively”.It needs hard “labour” work.If failed then whole treatment plan may need to be “reformed”.

ChessorBuckaroo · 02/04/2025 23:46

Of all the mental decisions this batshit, narcissistic loon is making the 25% tariff on foreign cars (ie. quality cars unlike american shite) is the pick.

Gardenhaurs · 02/04/2025 23:41

Cocoa beans are produced in tropical zones around the Equator, where climate conditions are well suited for growing cocoa trees. About 70 percent of the world’s cocoa beans come from four West African countries: Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon. I don’t think the USA exports many cocoa beans. I could be wrong though.

What's his fap with the UK?
WTF does that little poisoned banana want with us?

Gmo food without the regulations enforced by the EU?

lifeonmars100 · 02/04/2025 23:50

Those boards! he looks like an old style fairground barker, "roll up, roll up, get your tariffs here, we have biggly tariffs, we have lovely tariffs, roll up people, it's Trump's tariff time"

Barney16 · 02/04/2025 23:51

We, using we to mean the whole of the world, aren't buying enough US beef apparently or chicken. Well Donald that's cos your beef and chicken are rubbish. We don't want to be chlorinated thanks very much.

madeofmore · 02/04/2025 23:51

As soon as that board came out I was waiting for the game show memes.

Meanwhile back in 1972, Trump could be saying, 'well Canada, let's see what you've won! It's a TA RiFFFFFF'

He just wants Americans to hate the big bad world that is so against them.

lawpluslaw · 02/04/2025 23:53

The fact that there are posters coming on to defend this as though it's some rational, considered economic philosophy instead of a deranged, narcissistic, moronic tantrum that is likely to plunge the world economy into chaos at a moment of fractured political alliances is mind-boggling to me.

Exactly. And even if we can find a way to grow bananas in Britain (Eden Project style biomes?), if the growing and packing is done by staff on a British living wage with decent terms and conditions, will the cost of a banana be too high for it to remain an affordable everyday item for people on average incomes?

Having said that, it’s an environmental necessity, as well as a matter of national (food, energy) security, for us to produce food, energy and goods as close to home as possible. Otherwise, we cause unnecessary environmental damage transporting stuff across the globe, especially perishable goods (like fresh food) by air. As well as taking economic risks by relying on imports from other countries (e.g. Russian gas, Ukrainian grain). As well as exploiting people/causing environmental damage in other countries so we can have cheaper stuff.

Haven’t seen Trump’s performance, though. Sounds entertaining.

Agreed!

ILovebenefits · 02/04/2025 23:58

at first I thought he was kinda funny, not anymore, he’s a horrible racist pig, it’s actually rather scary now, I’m certainly not laughing at him anymore, he’s unhinged

Ilikewinter · 02/04/2025 22:01

I'm just getting the sky news updates but I did notice that Russia isn't on his tarrif chart. Is that because they are now best buddies?????

I think Russia is still largely sanctioned by the US, so that is likely why. Though honestly I find your point very credible. I wouldn't be surprised if the sanctions get lifted soon.

Anniegetyourgun · 03/04/2025 00:00

How that twerp can believe that VAT is a tariff defies logic. How does it discriminate against the US? Their products are taxed in exactly the same way as those from any other source, including those produced here. You'd think being the most powerful etc etc he'd have economists and financial advisers who could explain this stuff, but apparently not.

SabrinaThwaite · 03/04/2025 00:01

Maybe he’ll reveal Donny’s Top Prize of a speed boat / caravan / truck that we could have won instead of a 10% tariff.

Well Australia banned US beef over Mad Cow Disease (which their beef doesn't have) and there's also some sort of chemical/additive in US beef (I forget the name, I read it earlier) that's banned in multiple countries. Also their chicken gets washed in chlorine due to sub par hygiene procedures. So that's mainly why no-one buys it.

TheDevilWearPrimarni · 02/04/2025 23:26

@OonaStubbs
You can’t set up manufacturing overnight. It will take time to set up and build a supply chain and train workers. Typical populist, simple answers to complex problems.

Not only that but an iPhone build in the US by workers getting paid US salary will cost Americans 5000$ so even the Taiwan iPhone with it's 50% new tariffs will still be cheaper. To the poster a few comments above:neoliberalism is here to stay I'm afraid and you should tell those neighbours celebrating its end to get a grip on how the economy works.

samarrange · 03/04/2025 00:06

He has put tariffs on the Heard & McDonald Islands (population zero) and the British Indian Ocean Territory, aka Diego Garcia, where nobody apart from US military personnel live.

Clearly these are the result of hundreds of hours of diligent work by experienced economists, and definitely not Elon's buddy Bigballs with a spreadsheet and a copy of the Windows dropdown list of countries.

SabrinaThwaite · 03/04/2025 00:13

What tariffs has he applied to Nambia, Nipple and Button?
