Just watching the news here and feelings are ranging from "meh" to despair. How the H-E Double Hockey Sticks did we get here?

And now to get through a month before the election with Trump threatening another tariff war on April 2!

Thought fellow Canucks would enjoy this if they haven't heard it yet.
New song from Glass Tiger and Alan Frew 's introduction:

I am thrilled and honoured to share this simple song with you today. A song, that I trust, invokes within you, the love, passion and respect, for all who have contributed to the tapestry of this great nation. From the ancient beginnings of our magnificent Indigenous Peoples, to the times of those who made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting against the horrors of despotism and tyranny, Canada has, and always shall be…Strong & Free. When respected and honoured, Canada is a friend, an ally, and a beacon of hope for the millions she holds in her embrace today and for the millions yet to come. Canada is NOT a coin to be placed into a slot machine, nor a card to be turned over on a gambling table. Canada is NOT something to be politicized, bartered for, nor sold. I trust you will enjoy and embrace this simple song. A song and a tale that chooses no sides in the elitist, political arena. It comes to you as a celebration of Canada’s beauty and as a call to action, encouraging you to cherish and protect the freedoms we enjoy today. With Glass Tiger, I have travelled the world carrying Canada’s message of friendship, including, to almost every “nook and cranny” within the great nation we call the USA. While travelling and performing there I have shared wonderful times with great people, who, like most of us, want only to live in peace and harmony with the rest of the world. I have also broken bread and shared fellowship in war zones with the brave men and women of our militaries, allied together to defend the freedoms that so many take for granted. My friends, whether you be Canadian, American, or from wherever you call home, this is “Canada’s Song,” and I am asking a favour of you today. PLEASE SHARE don’t just hit the like button. SHARE the video with your loved ones, your friends, your neighbours, your cat and dog if ya have one. SHARE IT TO THE WORLD! Let’s rescue our freedom from the clutches of those who would have us bow to their self-serving whims. Thank you in peace and harmony, Alan ❤️ Lryics:

From the isle of Vancouver
To the Labrador Sea
One nation that lives strong and free
Where I'm free to be me

From the songs of the prairies
To the call of the ponds
Hero's of times come and gone
But the memories go
On and on and on

Oh this is Canada's Song
Oh where my heart belongs
Where you're free to be a dreamer
Free to be who you are
Free to believe in your star
Free to go far

Oh this is Canada's Song
Oh where my heart belongs
Oh Where we're free to be
Oh we're strong and free

Free to be

Oh free to be a dreamer
Free to be who you are

Oh this is Canada's song
Oh where my heart belongs
Oh we're free to be
Oh we're strong and free

Oh this is Canada's song
Oh where I'm free to be
Strong and Free

Spring break is coming to an end here. Did anyone venture to the States for their vacation? Boycott and stay home? Anyone want to share experiences of either?

A news item from Global News about a business just over the line in Point Roberts that is closing as a result of tariffs. Years ago I had a P/O box in Blaine so I could receive items that weren't shipped to Canada. I knew several people that had same or used the parcel office noted in this new story.

Any thoughts on what Trump will be announcing on tariffs on 2 April? He refers to it as Liberation Day!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/03/2025 22:49

@Parker231 I wish we'd stop holding our breath and just forge new trade relations. I think, collectively, we're all a bit pissed off at this point. However, I'm wanting to hold up a sign saying, Traitor, down at Peace Arch after hearing the wait was 90 mins to cross. Why, in God's name, are we still going down there spending our $$$???

I crossed through two weeks ago and it was only about a 20 min wait.

Reuters posted this today:

I saw the interview with the fellow from Jack Daniels bemoaning the harsh stance of the Canadian retaliation. It gave me a bit of rage because it seemed a little too "poor me" and completely lacking an understanding that his country is responsible for this mess and instead of complaining about our response he should be furious at his president and the republican party.

We’ve not crossed the border but will look at the times at the nearest to us. Our friends (Canadian) in VT who we use to meet for lunch every couple of weeks are more than happy to come north to see us instead.

Russia has no tariffs as there are already strong trade sanctions in place.
Also.
Trump loves Putin

There are sanctions due to the war, however, the US is looking at removing them. What does that tell you?

Time for Canada to get tougher by hitting oil and electricity to the US together with potash.

You mean the sour crude from western Canada that can only be refined in the US? Or possibly you've forgotten that there is no pipeline from western Canada to eastern Canada so your oil must flow through US pipelines? Also, why is your media and government not upset in the slightest about the 100% tariffs that the Chinese put on your products a few weeks ago? BTW, exports are 34% of Canada's GDP while they are only 13% of US GDP. The US is also 75% of Canada's export market.

Not to mention that potash is produced in plenty of places around the world, including the US. We can make/buy it from somewhere else.

I'm just reading some local news from down in Florida. This article from the Miami Herald is interesting. It is about the decrease in Canadian snowbirds (winter vacationers). I stand by my assertion that the best way to protest is to avoid travel to the States.

Report on the impact of the tariffs - the idiot is sending us towards a global recession.

Stock Exchange closes on worst day since 2020 but Trump insists stocks will 'boom'
The New York stock exchange has closed on its worst day of trading since June 2020 – during the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The main indices saw their worst one-day falls in five years as Donald Trumpclaimed that “the markets are going to boom” in response to his sweeping tariffs.
The S&P 500 index is down 4.9% at the close, which Reuters flags is the biggest one-day drop since June 2020.
The Dow has also posted its biggest one-day drop since June 2020, down 4%.
Meanwhile, the Nasdaq tumbled 5.9%, its worst single-day performance since March 2020.
The scale of the sell-off, wiping trillions of dollars off the value of US companies, highlights just how alarmed investors are by the tariffs, and the fears they could lead to a recession.
Speaking to reporters earlier on Thursday, Trump denied market turmoil presented a problem. The president said:
I think it’s going very well. It was an operation like when a patient gets operated on and it’s a big thing. I said this would be exactly the way it is … We’ve never seen anything like it. The markets are going to boom. The stock is going to boom. The country is going to boom.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/04/2025 16:01

@Parker231 and I haven't seen any economist praise tariff implementation. Clearly the market isn't supportive.
