Just watching the news here and feelings are ranging from "meh" to despair. How the H-E Double Hockey Sticks did we get here?

News this am of Putin accusing Norway of some treaty breech.
Meanwhile, Portugal has cancelled buying US planes and AUS reconsidering a US submarine collaboration. Canada as well reviewing our fighter jet contract with the USA. Big $$ contracts being lost due to lack of trust.
Not only elbows up but arms up.

@Mumtobabyhavoc Sort of. I was born in the UK but lived in Canada from the age of 2. Sadly, I don't have an English accent but at least rarely get asked if I'm American (Canadians hate being mistaken for Americans). So yes, we are retired, though young retirees.
Canadians are also not particularly patriotic. I don't think I've ever seen a Canadian flag on someone's porch. But the recent "pulling together" and yes, patriotism, is doing my heart good ❤️
Where are you from?

Edited

You don't speak for all Canadians re hating being mistaken for an American!
I am pretty much asked weekly 'where in America are you from?' and I don't hate it. I am a Cdn in the UK.
Also. You don't have to fly a flag to be patriotic. Personally I think it's overkill when I'm in The States to see them flying from every corner, it's all a bit much, but that's me.

AUS is also on the receiving end of tariff issues with Trump.

Thankfully I’ve retained my French accent (although my first language is Flemish) so no chance anyone will think I’m American!

I'm going to post some news items here and it would be great if others across the country wanted to fo same. I'm also interested in similar events internationally or international coverage of boycott/tariff events.
Reminder: I'm Canadian and living in Vancouver.

Same source, CTV-Vancouver:
Ferries to the US from BC's capital city, Victoria (yes, that Queen), have ridership down by about 20% and border crossing via land were down by 500,000 last month. Awaiting March stats as it is spring break here until Apr 1.

Trade war fueling B.C. tourism industry as many decline to travel south

The Coho ferry was only two third’s full Tuesday morning as it left the inner harbour in Victoria, headed for Port Angeles.

Can any other Canadian Costco shoppers comment on price increase across the country? I bought Kirkland coffee in January at $23.99. Yesterday the price was $29.99. That's a 25% increase which would seem to match the tariff's we're applying to US products.
For reference, Kirkland coffee is widely known to be made by Starbucks for Costco. I'm in Vancouver.

i see that as the online price but not sure if it is the instore price.
i'll probably be going on friday and will report back on the kirkland brand espresso.
i'm in the interior.

I just logged into the app and it's $31.99 for delivery. I wonder if we have different prices online and in-wRehouse regionally? 🧐

I’ll find out, my neighbors both work for Costco.

Yes. I think flying a flag in the USA is a way of life. It means more there. However others are patriotic and also care about their countries. The flag rallies the numerous Americans with roots elsewhere so has a different use.

I do think America First is something to worry about though. It’s not remotely considering others who are affected: even your supposed friends.

One little green shoot: Tesla (of all the companies) has said it will be short of parts with a trade war. The message is unsigned I heard but they can see dangers ahead giving them supply issues.

I would say it almost has other connotations now, when I see an American flag, I think ‘Trump supporter’. I know a lot of other people that have said this recently, it’s kind of sad.

Because the extreme right/maga uses the flag and the term patriot as their symbols. If you don't fly the flag, or wear a flag pin etc you aren't a patriot. And only the right are patriots.

So what do you make of the Confederate flag? I certainly didn’t think the Stars and Stripes was divisive. Although we’ve had similar issues with flag of St George in England

What do you mean? It's a divisive symbol of southern resistance and is widely known mean support for white supremacy, racism, and the defense of slavery. Your question either belies ignorance or you are trying to stir things up, which is it?

@Mumtobabyhavoc

My point was that the USA already has an objectionable flag. I’m not quite sure what you saw in my post that was not exactly that. Why do they need another one? Anyway as you have taken umbridge, I’m out. I am supporting Canada but I do not need nastiness from you.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/03/2025 18:59

I just caught a bit of US news on CNN. Their coverage of out politics is putting L's at a 90% to win the election and only 23% of us want friendly relations with the US.
To clarify for our US friends, it referred to political approach, not how we feel about the people.
The national news I saw last night had all three polls putting the top two parties fairly close.

@Mumtobabyhavoc off topic, my Costco connection says the computerized prices are provincially set. So same except for online (which includes delivery and is higher priced) I get the Kirkland brand expresso and paid $24.88
I didn’t ask about any recent increase and am unsure what I paid last month.

Totally agree. I don’t ’hate” it but am always hearing ‘oh Canadians hate being called American’.

We speak the BBC English of NA that’s why. So we ((Canadians) sound ‘American’ because Americans are adopting the BBC type English of NA.

I have always seen a lot of flags in Canada (especially compared to the UK). I like it and it’s fine. The connotations aren’t what they are in the UK of flying rhe St George’s cross for example.

I thought North America and South America are continents. I think some North Americans are Canadians. I must admit that I do tend to say 'Americans' when I mean people from the USA. There ought to be a word for them. You-ess-ay-ians?

Agree 100%. It’s a racist symbol.
