Just watching the news here and feelings are ranging from "meh" to despair. How the H-E Double Hockey Sticks did we get here?

Agree 100%. It’s a racist symbol.

I just had to steer the convo away from chat about it. (And it can easily be googled)
I want this thread to be about sharing info and discussing the trade/relationship issue. 🇨🇦🇺🇸

Ok, no worries. My head is spinning with the daily horror of it all so I’m probably not that great at keeping on topic! Apologies, I will bow out Flowers

It is a daily horror. That's a very good description.

Businesses in Maine are struggling due to lack of Canadian visitors

There have been several news stories about/interviews with business owners in Blaine etc talking about it as well. Did you aee the CBC story about the library that straddles the border?

In Stanstead, in Quebec? The US are now blocking access to the entrance as it’s in Vermont. Totally ridiculous!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/03/2025 16:09

@Parker231
Found the story, from CTV:

https://www.ctvnews.ca/montreal/article/us-authorities-closing-canadian-access-to-library-that-straddles-quebec-vermont-border/

The majority of the building is in Canada, but the front entrance is in the States.

Totally agree. I don’t ’hate” it but am always hearing ‘oh Canadians hate being called American’.

We speak the BBC English of NA that’s why. So we ((Canadians) sound ‘American’ because Americans are adopting the BBC type English of NA.

I have always seen a lot of flags in Canada (especially compared to the UK). I like it and it’s fine. The connotations aren’t what they are in the UK of flying rhe St George’s cross for example.

Team Canada 🇨🇦

Some of us hate it, some annoyed, some don't care, a range of thoughts. I just correct the person. We also have a very wide range of accents. I've been asked/told I sound like I'm from California, for ex.

I googled that price code as .88 isn't usual. It means manager's special/limited stock. I'd buy up... expect the item to disappear soon.
Google: costco canada price codes

Yes, I think it was on the news last week. The residents come here for prescriptions and veterinary services (of all things). Half the residents are Canadian as well, I think.

i have friends in tswwassen and have on a few occasions ventured over to point roberts. also been to hyder alaska and skagit valley provincial park all american locations only accessible via bc. now i'm not sure what the population of hyder it (at one point it was 10).
skagit valley provincial park is hard to get to (imho) but is a shared usa canada site (except for a tiny low chain fence and a few markers).

yesterday my news feed had several reports that the king was going to extend an offer to the potus for the usa to join the commonwealth. this i found really triggering so many young athletes attend the commonwealth games and it's not as intense a competition as the olympics i'm really angry at the thought of the usa taking part and taking over opportunities from smaller (less populated) countries.

It's safe to say that "news" item was fake.

ETA: I'm googling... 🤓

oh @Mumtobabyhavoc i sure hope so. american athletes can be so overbearing to those without the vast competition and training facilities (funding).

Could we please keep our chat away from criticizing our American friends? I'd like kind discussion here to share trade and associated news.

I will keep an eye out for news about the commonwealth business. So far it seems to be in the tabs.

@Mumtobabyhavoc other than the price of coffee how do you anticipate the trade situation to affect your family?

everyone here is affected as all US goods have increased in price due to tariffs.

are you in the UK?

For those wondering which items are tariffed:

Those outside of Canada may not be aware how very common it is to drive to the States for groceries and gas. I mentioned it in a previous post. It is an easy trip to drive down to Bellingham for a Costco run and gas-up in Blaine on the way back if you live in S. Surrey, for example. Day trips to shop at Bellis Fair or the Seattle Premium Outlets, weekends in Seattle for an M's game or driving down to park and fly Allegiant Air to Vegas are all as normal to us here in the Vancouver area as mushy peas are to Brits.

@Mumtobabyhavoc im in the interior of bc. and shopping in the usa just not feasible from here. so my shopping is local to start with. we're retired so for us (i'll need to check on my kids) no workplace concerns. i do order my clothing from the usa but will do my best to forgo that and i get my multivits from the usa but am looking to change that as well. both those compromises though are have minimal impact to my life.

sounds like you did a fair amount of cross boarder shopping which might pinch the pocketbook for sure.

I don't, but I have. I've also spent a lot of time in the States. I know a lot of people for whom it's a way of life, a few with holiday homes over the line, things like that.

There are plenty of Canadian options for you, luckily. 🙂

We would previously cross at Champlain–St. Bernard de Lacolle to go and meet friends in Burlington VT for lunch. We’ve stopped doing it now and our friends are coming to visit us instead. Food shopping at home isn’t difficult particularly with stores highlighting Canadian products.
