To have a respectful discussion about Trump. Did you expect him to act in the way he has? Are you happy with it? What’s the mood towards him over there?

I’m completely speechless at his ambush of Zelenskyy tonight and just trying to understand how this has come about, and whether he has support to continue acting in this way. He was obviously chosen to be President by the public but I assume they would never have guessed how the last few weeks would have gone.

I am horrified, but not surprised. I, along with many people I know, detest trump/vance. We could NOT believe he was elected again. And now we all hope reason will prevail and he and his minions will be stopped before everything escalates, but no idea how.

Fordian · 28/02/2025 19:31

Not US, but how could one not be deeply embarrassed by this spectacle?

His supporters will be loving it. USA! USA!

They voted for the freaks.

LuckyPeonies · 28/02/2025 19:35

@Maitri108 77 million, and regret is growing amongst all, save the most rabid. The coming tariffs & cuts will sway even more.

avocadotofu · 28/02/2025 19:36

I'm American but have lived in the UK for a long time. I am so angry by what they're doing. No one I know voted for them so everyone I know is finding it all a lot to deal with.

Greenfinch7 · 28/02/2025 19:38

Horrified but not really surprised-he said that he would do these things. Actually, it is a bit more extreme than I thought re Musk and co. Awful awful awful- I don't know anyone who can stand this administration

Screamingabdabz · 28/02/2025 19:39

I’m not American but I completely get why a certain mentality of American would love Trump but the spoiling for a world war… the ramping up the tension… do solid Christian right wing apple pie loving Americans really want that???

Onlyonekenobe · 28/02/2025 19:47

I live in the USA. There will be people who just love the hard man that Trump looks like he's being - if you want our support, give us your minerals. No minerals, no support and no that support won't ever been American troops anyway. What's in it for us, basically.

There will be others holding their heads in their hands, wondering wtf is going on with this man.

I've not really understand why Americans aren't more anti tarrifs. Given that it is the Americans that will pay them and presumably quite a bit of what is imported is needed so it is basically an extra tax. You'd have through Republicans would be anti tax rather than loving it.

I’ve watched quite a few ‘man in the street’ interviews with trump supporters re. the tariffs, and these people actually believed tariffs are paid by the countries they are levied against. They were horrified to find out consumers must pay them.

I'd like to think this is true but the cult only seems to gather steam. Are there really lot of regretful Trump voters - as in polls etc showing this? I'd love some glimmer of hope!

This is what I am wondering. I've seen some Americans saying Trump did the right thing today.

Growing regret does not mean they will be vocal about it, but it will reflect in next year’s midterm elections (provided we still have free elections next year). But layoffs, medicaid cuts, increased medication costs, increased costs via tariffs, continued grifting by trump, his unqualified appointments, plus the unchecked access to sensitive information given to the likes of musk & his minions, are giving pause to many.

I cannot speak for all, but my husband’s family were vocal trump supporters and, as they are now/will be personally affected, are not happy. Of course, those who are rabid trump supporters will likely never see fault.

As for polls, as far as I know, aggregate polls are the most reliable and those show approval ratings almost even with disapproval ratings, which is shocking less than two months into this administration as this should be the ‘honeymoon period’.

I am American and I am devastated about what is going on in this country and around the world. I live in an area surrounded by Trump voters so I feel like when I go out and look around I am surrounded by stupidity. I am scared and embarrassed that Trump is the president and now I definitely did not vote for him and never would.

SpuytenDuyvil · 01/03/2025 04:31

Yeah, I'm American and we are horrified, today being a particular low point. We are ashamed. Less than 30% of American adults voted for him, but here we are.

beachcitygirl · 01/03/2025 04:52

If it wasn't so truly awful - it would be funny.
He's stupid. Insane, deranged, sociopathic or evil.

I KNOW it's not all Americans but FFS

And wtf was Sir Flopalot Starmer the kid starved doing kissing trump ass

It's like watching a bad movie but it's real

That is disturbing in terms of a lack of education about economics, but honestly. I suspect it would be the same here in the UK.

logicisall · 01/03/2025 05:13

I would genuinely like to hear the opinion of a Trump supporter here. Unfortunately the only one in my acquaintance is totally gobsmacked at the 'display' of finger pointing and haranguing of Zelensky.

Slavetomycat · 01/03/2025 06:49

I'm a recent American citizen, but have lived in California for four decades. I'm utterly sickened and horrified at what happened today. We keep saying we expected the worst behavior, but in truth could not have imagined this level of lunacy.

All of my circle are despairing as to what happens next. It is truly frightening.

Adamante · 01/03/2025 06:56

Hey Americans, mostly we Brits sneer at you, laugh at you and mock your culture (especially here on MN), yet are happy to accept your huge defence presence and protection with all that that costs you, financially and in the lives of your men and women. But now we are really pissed off, scared and resentful that you’re pulling back on that and it makes us feel vulnerable. How do you feel about it?

Good point.

The trouble is that most people on MN have no idea how much the US has supported us and the EU financially and don't really care.

ZippyDoodle · 01/03/2025 07:09

I'm not American but I feel embarrassed for them. Shocking behaviour in the Oval Office. Trump was perfectly pleasant to a put in. I think the situation with Zelensky was planned.

ZippyDoodle · 01/03/2025 07:11

Putin

Wildflowers99 · 01/03/2025 07:27

It’s devastating.

What I can’t get over is his position that ‘nobody ever does anything for the USA’.

We followed them into the Iraq war after 9/11, and made ourselves a target for repeated terrorist attacks after; as well as spending billions of ££ (that we can much less absorb) and who knows how many soldiers lives.

Russia is NOT a US ally, they are a Trump ally. And would not support the US in a conflict.

The US cannot exist as a solitary country under an iron dome surrounded by enemies. Israel is having a tough time existing like this and its enemies are much much smaller.

I wish there could be some long term thinking.
