What even if they're Trump voters?

More fool them. Voting against your own interests.

theDudesmummy · 21/01/2025 22:13

FFS are the fascist apologists still at it? Yes, it was a fascist salute. By a man who may be a fascist or at least playing at being a fascist, which is just as repugnant (and dangerous). We already know that. The German press knows it, historians and scholars of fascism know it, the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers know it.

Is he on drugs as well?

Yeah. He's a habitual user of ketamine and weed. He may use other drugs we don't know about but he's admitted these ones.

This is exactly the argument that will bring on the next world war, isn't it. The argument that some humans have a right to more just because of where they were born while the rest need to watch and starve from the other side of the border. The argument that you are more special, capable, more deserving of the rest because of your birthplace.
It's a global world. Everybody is watching everybody thanks to the internet. Some are protective and greedy and some (the majority) hungry for more.

Until we get to some sort of equality of resources everywhere in the world, people will not be safe, no matter how strict the borders are. Forcing people out increases hostility and threatens peace.
People buying into far right policies are simply shortsighted.

I think the opposite is true. Bringing people in actually increases hostility and threatens peace. Your theory would create chaos, if there are no borders, and people should be welcome in because they’re unhappy in their own countries. It wouldn’t work - Multiculturism doesn’t work. People don’t integrate.

That's clearly gesturing, not saluting

Any case, who cares if the Democrats are fascists too, personally I am not invested in distinguishing one American politician from another, unless, like Musk, they try to interfere in our affairs.

ArtTheClown · 21/01/2025 22:17

Whatever his intentions, it must be very disturbing for Jewish people, particularly. I imagine Jewish organisations fighting antisemitism will be deeply concerned that such behaviour isn't normalised.

The ADL describes the gesture as "awkward, not a Nazi salute".

Yep. So far we've had:

Its because he's autistic.
He was throwing out love from his heart.
He didn't say Seig Heil when he did it.🤯
It might be because he does drugs.
My Jewish family aren't bothered by Nazi salutes.
Everybody does it: Churchgoers, Santa, toddlers, Cat dolls.
It's because hes "awkward."
He's reclaiming his body's right to make whatever movements he wants it to, free from censorship.🤪
Even if he did do a Nazi salute, people should choose not to be offended. It's not that bad.

I may have missed something out.

It is possible that the ADL are more interested in the continued military, financial and political support of Israel than in rooting out the odd demented anti-semite in Trumps circus. Only a theory.

Musk isn't an antisemite though. He's been really supportive of the Israeli hostages and the Bring Them Home campaign including meeting relatives. I posted a clip upthread.

You missed the part where you aren't the mighty all seeing eye that knows everything and we listed above are allowed to not be offended by a stupid drug taking troll.

It's not a Nazi salute because he visited Auschwitz
Here are a load of other people doing something that is nothing like what Musk did and I'm going to claim that they are doing Nazi salutes too. If they're not doing one, that means he wasn't either.

I am very surprised. We don't know for sure what Musk intended, but if it inspired others to feel free to do it it there would be blatant antisemitism. As a pp posted a released Trump fan in an offensive and antisemitic T shirt, it's clear that there are people who hold these views.

WTF!

mollyfolk · 21/01/2025 22:25

I don't actually think he made a nazi salute. He is clearly touching his chest at first and then he makes the gesture that the end look like a salute. So it looks like enough of a salute to get everyone talking but not enough to convince the followers.

I think it's just noise. Designed to distract. The "you can't say anything anymore" crowd will be giving out about everyone being called a nazi these days.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/01/2025 22:30

Similarly, others are allowed to be offended and alarmed by drug taking trolls in power doing Nazi salutes @sparrowse.

theDudesmummy · 21/01/2025 22:31

Not being openly antisemitic doesn't mean you can't be a fascist. The German fascists (extreme right nationalists) were, but other forms of extreme right nationalism are available. Like Musk I grew up in apartheid SA. He was in Pretoria I believe, I was in Johannesburg. Joburg was and presumably still is very much a city in which middle class Jewish people were very prominent. As a middle class boy he would have grown up among them. Many white people were fine with Jewish people but still enthusiastic proponents of/beneficiaries of apartheid.

And the LGBT community. And non-white people. And women.

Edited

Israel was a supporter of the Apartheid regime in SA, if only for geopolitical reasons.

Yes, I think there will be strong concerns expressed from organisations that represent all minorities that were persecuted under the Nazi regime over the next days. It maybe there is initial shock and people are not sure how to respond.

Tittat50 · 21/01/2025 22:52

As the day has progressed and I watch it again, I'm more convinced this is a Nazi salute now.

It's beyond comprehension that this is actually something someone would consciously do on a world stage. There's a tiny part of me open to some amazing explanation. I don't think he'll give one though. More concerning really.

theDudesmummy · 21/01/2025 22:53

Indeed they were, including selling arms to them. It's a complicated story.
