Trump has explained that he is against illegal immigrants - because if you allow people in illegally you create a potentially dangerous and unmanageable situation for all. Do you think illegal immigration is a good idea?

I don't think Trump is anti Muslim. Who do you think is anti Muslim exactly?

Trump just shut down the CBP One app and associated appointments, which allowed people to emigrate to the US legally. So he's clearly not just opposed to illegal immigration. He's just opposed to immigration, full stop.

Beetlebumz · 21/01/2025 20:43

Yes. He did. The world is so scary right now.

AzurePanda · 21/01/2025 20:43

@anonymous98 the CBP one app was not for people seeking to immigrate to the USA through legal means.

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2025 20:44

I've just attempted to mimic what Musk did by saying that I'm throwing my love out to everyone and putting my hand to my heart and gesturing outwards.

However I do it, throwing my love out automatically goes palm up. Trying to do the same gesture palm down feels extremely awkward and unnatural. If I do 'throw' palm down, my hand makes a throwing gesture, not a flat, straight palm down one.

Throwing love is an open gesture. His gesture does not match his words.

Beetlebumz · 21/01/2025 20:44

SassK · 20/01/2025 23:01

He's physically very awkward in his gestures. He said he was directing love as he threw his arm out. Nothing to see here.

Wow. Are you always so naive?

Beetlebumz · 21/01/2025 20:45

Sortedit · 21/01/2025 19:54

He was sending a message via a hand gesture from his heart, he would have made a similar gesture if he had touched his lips and blown a kiss.

In fact most toddlers I know must be nazis because they all make similar gestures when blowing kisses.

People need to take off their tin foil hats.

Nah.

Whimsicalgrape · 21/01/2025 20:45

He looks like he has trapped wind judging by his facial expression. That's me being petty though, I fully admit.

You might be surprised by this, but yes Hitler did talk about the Jewish question right from the start. Have a look at his policies right from the start and how he actually got into power, the complexities of the 1930s, why people voted for him. It was not at all as you think. Have a good look, read some good books by some experts and then come back and chat.

No one is defending a salute because there wasn't a salute.

Could you please provide me a source that said Hitler publicly advocated for sending Germany’s Jewish population to the gas chambers right from the start? I mentioned the final solution (eg the holocaust) specifically - not antisemitism in general.

I’m well aware that antisemitism was ingrained in fascism/the nazi party, and I’m well aware of the wider economic and political social situation within Germany that contributed towards the rise of the nazis, but I’m struggling to find any evidence of Hitler announcing his planned genocide during his rise to power. As far as I’m aware the first oblique reference to the holocaust coming directly from Hitler to the general German population was in 1939 (the ‘annihilation of European Jewry’ prophesy) which was quite a while after his initial rise to power/chancellor in 1932/33? The Wannsee Conference wasn’t held until 1942.

user281262 · 21/01/2025 20:48

Musk is a wild card. A bored rich bloke who enjoys winding up the left wing, he knows what he is doing.

The salute, in my opinion, was a thump to the heart then arm in the air. Could be the Roman salute or a thump and throwing his heart out there.

I don't take it as a nazi salute but can see why it's upset some.

It is for refugees. It is perfectly legal to be refugee.

dubsie · 21/01/2025 20:50

In Trumps words we are going to look at how we elect leaders in America...next time we will do things differently....

Trumps words and hid words mean something.....look at his first day. He just pardon the capital rioters who attempted to a political takeover.

I'm afraid Americans have cast there last vote or at least a vote that means something...

The Nazi salute was taken from the Roman salute.
Just as the swastika was taken from an ancient good luck symbol.

AzurePanda · 21/01/2025 20:27

@username2373 so you don’t believe on borders?

Only people born in a well-off country believe in closed borders.

AzurePanda · 21/01/2025 20:55

@TriesNotToBeCynical the app was and is irrelevant for those seeking to emigrate to the USA through legal means. It was used to get appointments at the border for illegal immigrants and asylum seekers.

You mean the Roman salute with very little evidence for its use in Ancient Rome but a lot of evidence of its by Mussolini and the 20th century is extreme right? No fascist implication there…

A bored rich man who likes winding up the left wing by invoking the murder of millions of civilians. Because the holocaust is just something to troll about obviously. Either he’s genuinely from the extreme right (which there is plenty of evidence of) or he sees fit to reduce the holocaust to a wind up. Either way is he really somebody we want having so much influence on the world stage?

newrubylane · 21/01/2025 20:55

I'm on the fence re. His intentions. But it doesn't matter whether he intended it as one or not in the grand scheme of things. The far right online are already celebrating it openly, and it is going to be taken up by others. Plus they love the headlines and winding up those who opposed them. So even if that wasn't an intentional Nazi salute, I fear the next one will be.

Whimsicalgrape · 21/01/2025 20:56

Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it.

You would also natural use both hands

He’s an odd, awkward guy. I gasped when I saw it. Then I wondered whether he had any self awareness. Does he know what he did? How it would look? Or did he think, he was making up his own cool thing?

His gaffes will certainly take attention off Trump.

“Gaffes”?
“Odd, awkward guy”?

Stop making excuses for him and trying to downplay it and suggest he didn’t know what he did. He knew full well.

AzurePanda · 21/01/2025 21:02

@TriesNotToBeCynical it may well be legal for a person to apply for refugee status but the US is under no obligation to necessarily grant it. Not is it a requirement for a country to provide an app in order to facilitate it.

BurntBroccoli · 21/01/2025 21:02

**naturally

Bear in mind one of the first things he did yesterday was sign an executive order to stop birth right citizenship

which isn’t even legal for him to do because it’s an amendment to the constitution

it’s absolutely not just illegal immigration he’s against

AzurePanda · 21/01/2025 21:05

@username2373 how do you think the NHS let alone the rest of the world would look in 5 years time in a world without borders?

TriesNotToBeCynical · 21/01/2025 21:05

Asylum seekers are legal immigrants if they are granted asylum - that's the whole point of seeking it!

Ok...don't all jump on me for suggesting this but what if he is trying to reclaim or be allowed to move his body how he wants? He knows it's a provocative gesture but why shouldn't he be able to reframe this movement and take the weight out of it - free speech narrative.

John Cleese et al used this in comedy for a couple of decades. It shouldn't have so much power so that everyone is frothing over it.

Disclaimer - Remember I am playing devil's advocate and just trying to break down what has happened and not trying to cause offense/be insensitve or start an argument.

I've read this post many times trying to make sense of it.

What is he trying to reclaim?

What did he lose and who took it from him?
Is this just word salad saying he did a Nazi salute because he wanted to?
