I've read the posts. It looks very much like one. What I don't know, is there any other use of such a gesture that might explain it. Do others use this gesture in a way that's not fascist. I want to be clearer on that.

I want more information on him and his history. This I don't know enough about.

He's incredibly weird, his behaviour on stage was very odd. Does that play any part in him doing something that to him is some 'bro love' type gesture. I don't know this yet.

He has Aspergers which will affect him socially and on an emotional level and explains how he behaves differently and comes across as being odd as you put it.

JoyousGreyOrca · 21/01/2025 13:28

I guess those who support Nazi style policies are going to defend a Nazi style salute

AzurePanda · 21/01/2025 13:18

@1dayatatime agreed and the action is preceded by a smiling Musk saying “thank you” twice before putting his hand on his heart.

Andrew Doyle has a very good piece out on this today, saying that people who honestly believe that Musk was doing a Nazi salute should be kept away from sharp cutlery.

Does that include the numerous eminent historians of the Nazi era who agree it was a Nazi salute?

His habitual drug use also contributes to him appearing odd.

Ok...don't all jump on me for suggesting this but what if he is trying to reclaim or be allowed to move his body how he wants? He knows it's a provocative gesture but why shouldn't he be able to reframe this movement and take the weight out of it - free speech narrative.

John Cleese et al used this in comedy for a couple of decades. It shouldn't have so much power so that everyone is frothing over it.

Disclaimer - Remember I am playing devil's advocate and just trying to break down what has happened and not trying to cause offense/be insensitve or start an argument.

JoyousGreyOrca · 21/01/2025 13:30

And his support for the extreme far right

JoyousGreyOrca · 21/01/2025 13:31

This might be possible, given that he is a massive prick of an edgelord. But he has espoused an awful lot of other Nazi-adjacent content of late (AfD support, the Kakius Maximus bullshit on his SM profile etc)

1dayatatime · 21/01/2025 13:32

@AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize

"Does that include the numerous eminent historians of the Nazi era who agree it was a Nazi salute?"

Then they must be pretty shit historians then as I don't recollect many Nazis first clutching their heart then giving a "salute " and then saying "my heart goes out to ".

If nothing else the whole thing would have taken a jolly long time to get through every time a "salute " was required.

The hand in the heart is the full Nazi salute.

You know that right?

According to wiki, you are incorrect about this - though if I am wrong please supply a source. For info, wiki says:

"The salute was executed by extending the right arm stiff to an upward 45° angle and then straightening the hand so that it is parallel to the arm. Usually, an utterance of "Sieg Heil", "Heil Hitler!", or "Heil!" accompanied the gesture. If one saw an acquaintance at a distance, it was enough to simply raise the right hand. If one encountered a superior, one would also say "Heil Hitler".If physical disability prevented raising the right arm, it was acceptable to raise the left.

Hitler gave the salute in two ways. When reviewing his troops or crowds, he generally used the traditional stiff-armed salute. When greeting individuals who saluted, he used a modified version of the salute, bending his right arm at a 90° angle with the elbow facing forward while holding an open hand with the bottom of the palm facing towards those greeted at shoulder height and the face of the palm parallel with the sky. It was also adopted by those with rank who would themselves be saluted."

Now, did Elon said "sieg heil" or anything similar? No, I don't think he did. So how about we focus on something more useful like improving welfare, education, literacy, children's services now

Ok but you all seem so aggressive no one is allowed to speak as they are 'thick' an 'idiot' You are comimg across as an 'Intellectual Fascist' and trying to mask it as if you are the Intellectual Elite.

TBH Mumsnet is a waste of time at the moment, it is almost impossible to discuss anything without a personal insult.

Are you watching a different video. He touched his heart said my heart goes out to you and then extended his arm.

You're delusional.

Sibilantseamstress · 20/01/2025 22:48

He’s an odd, awkward guy. I gasped when I saw it. Then I wondered whether he had any self awareness. Does he know what he did? How it would look? Or did he think, he was making up his own cool thing?

His gaffes will certainly take attention off Trump.

Some people might think my DH is an odd, awkward guy (AuDHD) but he still knows that this salute is unacceptable and would have absolutely no desire to do it.

It's so insulting when people use neurodiversity to excuse something grotesque.

I agree and it's an insult to those of us with Jewish family that survived the holocaust. Nazi is thrown about everywhere, it makes a mockery of what was one of the most horrendous times in history.

anotherside · 21/01/2025 13:37

2dogsandabudgie · 21/01/2025 13:34

Well yes that as well.

An intentional Nazi salute brought on by drug use is still an intentional Nazi salute. I agree though that there may be some kind of substance abuse going on.

It’s not “the idea however that he’d …” do something. He literally did it, of his own volition. Twice. Stop telling people to disbelieve their own eyes.

Edited

I'm not 'telling' anybody anything. I'll leave the 'thought' demands to the progressives...

Musk has clarified that what he made were giddy and enthusiastic gestures. He was filled to the rim (as in brim) with joy amongst his fellow Trumpists. What differentiates you and I is that I'm content to say yes, that explanation is perfectly plausible. You on the other hand will (typically) give no benefit of the doubt, and will continue to spit 'Nazi' at him.

Honestly, this 'nazi' bullshit is just the desperate dying wails of a political clan who're being increasingly rejected by normal people. People voted for Trump because they're sick of the cancel culture devotees. By all means go down swinging, but be in no doubt that history is leaving you behind 🙂

Do you really think that a Nazi salute has to be done in a certain way, with the right words, to a Nazi salute?!?

And even if it wasn’t a Nazi salute, doing that gesture at that o,ace,Nat that moment, was at the very least misjudged. He could easily have done the same arm movement with his palm up. He didn’t.

No other groups use that gesture. It is what it is - a Nazi salute. Yes he’s an odd character, yes he’s awkward, yes he has autism but none of that excuses it.

He is an interesting character because up until about 6-7 years ago he identified himself as socially liberal. Do you become notorious and politically powerful as a socially liberal person in the current climate? No. The only person Elon cares about is Elon and he’s creating a far right brand for himself. It was deliberate, he isn’t daft.

Ok...don't all jump on me for suggesting this but what if he is trying to reclaim or be allowed to move his body how he wants?

I just...no. No. I don't think that's what he's doing.

And even if he were (which let's be clear, he ISN'T and it's not his place to 'reclaim' Nazi salutes anyway oh god I can't believe I have to say this) can we please, please try to remember that 'freedom of speech' does not mean 'freedom from the consequences of that speech'.

He may be free to perform Nazi salutes. We are free to utterly condemn his performance and find him repellent and dangerous as a result of them.

I’m not calling him a Nazi, I’m saying he made a salute popularised by the Nazis - a Nazi salute. The rest of your post is just straw man nonsense and ad hominem attack about progressives which I’ll ignore.
