@TooBigForMyBoots

"I watched and listened. He made one Nazi salute. He turned around and made another Nazi salute. He turned back to the audience, paused and then said "my heart goes out to you"."

So you didn't see the bit where he clutched his heart (twice) before then putting his
arm out to the crowd?

The thing is you see a Nazi salute whereas I see a man grabbing his heart then throwing it out to the crowd and saying "my heart goes out to you "

I have to say I agree, it just looks like a kind of air high five to me.

Some of these comments are just crazy.

It's sad. There's so much division and extremism in every corner of the political landscape now.

Musk isn't backward at coming forward with his views, the idea however that he'd pull nazi salutes on the highest world stage is an insane assertion. It shows just how caught up some people have become; a frenzied race to the bottom for Trump detractors! Still, it's very hard to believe that people are falling for all these scare stories.

Hermyknee · 21/01/2025 13:14

He’s got the same chaos vibe as Dominic Cummings and The Hooded Claw.

Really? If you had inadvertently done something on an international platform that alarmed and distressed an enormous part of the population, you wouldn't find it in your heart to say something like,

I apologise for any upset or offence my actions caused. It was absolutely not my intent to make a gesture associated with Fascists.

So what he stands for is being a diseased loathsome fucking asshole who's unwilling or unable to care that he either purposely or accidentally mimed a signal used by people who callously murdered, in cold blood, over 6 million people?

I think people like you should be forced to follow the Auschwitz Museum and see daily the photos of beautiful babies, literally ripped out of their parents' arms and murdered.

I could be swayed either way on this one. But I recall some of the weird stuff he's done historically ( I think of the posts about that Diver guy).

He's known for being off the wall.

I'm not a Nazi sympathiser. I'm trying to weigh this up.

For want of a better word, it looks totally fucked either way.

I can't imagine Trumpet would be ok with this, no matter his personal views.

fromthevault · 21/01/2025 13:14

Earlgreygirl · 21/01/2025 12:42

Nope, don’t think it was a nazi salut! Tho some will enjoy thinking he did.
It was nothing more than a heart felt emotional gesture of the occasion, he was excited!

Call me an old stick in the mud, but I have never got so excited that I've inadvertently performed a gesture universally associated with support for fascist dictatorships and so offensive that it could get me arrested in several countries.

Guess I just need to have more fun though, eh?

It’s not “the idea however that he’d …” do something. He literally did it, of his own volition. Twice. Stop telling people to disbelieve their own eyes.

AzurePanda · 21/01/2025 13:18

@1dayatatime agreed and the action is preceded by a smiling Musk saying “thank you” twice before putting his hand on his heart.

Andrew Doyle has a very good piece out on this today, saying that people who honestly believe that Musk was doing a Nazi salute should be kept away from sharp cutlery.

Datadriven · 21/01/2025 13:18

Let me guess, OP - you didn’t like musk beforehand? I don’t much either, but I would think twice about posting a thread like this without watching the full video first… He literally thumps his heart and shouts I throw my heart to you or somesuch before flinging his arm out to the crowd. Nazi salute? Don’t think so. Many things wrong with this guy but I don’t think you’ve read this one right and I for one question your motives for starting this thread.

He didn't clutch anything. He didn't put his arm out to the crowd. He didn't grab anything. He didn't throw anything.

He made 2 Nazi salutes. If you wish to interpret these as clutching, throwing motions, that's your perogative. The rest of us saw what happened.

JoyousGreyOrca · 21/01/2025 13:21

@Datadriven You question the OPs motives??
I did not know Musk and Trump worship was now a condition of being on MN?

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/01/2025 13:22

Oh and the heart is in the chest. Not shoulder bone.

CurlewKate · 21/01/2025 13:22

@1dayatatime "The thing is you see a Nazi salute whereas I see a man grabbing his heart then throwing it out to the crowd and saying "my heart goes out to you "

Is "throwing your heart out to the crowd" a thing?

boltt · 21/01/2025 13:22

Doesn't a nazi salute originate from the forehead?

I really don't think it's a Nazi salute.

Fucking dumb though

fromthevault · 21/01/2025 13:22

Still, it's very hard to believe that people are falling for all these scare stories.

Are you suggesting that this is a 'story'? Not something that we all just actually witnessed either on film or in real time on the tv yesterday?

Even my dad, who always jokes that he is slightly to the right of Genghis Khan (oh, how we chortle) had a sharp intake of breath and said it looked 'very dodgy' when I mentioned it this morning. Are you suggesting my 76-year-old dyed in the wool Tory dad, who thinks Nigel Farage has some great ideas, is secretly a gullible woke leftie?

This is the clip I watched. Not sure what other people watched.

tabulahrasa · 21/01/2025 13:23

Thing is, if you genuinely believe he wasn’t doing a nazi salute - The only two options are

That he did it on purpose knowing full well it would look like one

Or that he’s so stupid that he didn’t realise it would look like one… and he manages to dress himself and stufff, so it seems unlikely

Tittat50 · 21/01/2025 13:23

Bringmeahigherlove · 21/01/2025 13:16

What is there to weigh up?

I've read the posts. It looks very much like one. What I don't know, is there any other use of such a gesture that might explain it. Do others use this gesture in a way that's not fascist. I want to be clearer on that.

I want more information on him and his history. This I don't know enough about.

He's incredibly weird, his behaviour on stage was very odd. Does that play any part in him doing something that to him is some 'bro love' type gesture. I don't know this yet.

You keep posting this like it's happening a vaccuum, and you keep ignoring all the other Nazi-adjacent discourse and imagery he has been embracing wholeheartedly in the past few months.

Are you watching a different video. He touched his heart said my heart goes out to you and then extended his arm.

Watch again. He said thank you, thank you then he does his Nazi salutes and only after them does he say my heart goes out to you.

@TooBigForMyBoots

"He didn't clutch anything. He didn't put his arm out to the crowd. He didn't grab anything. He didn't throw anything."

Well we must be watching two different videos then:

news.sky.com/story/donald-trump-inauguration-us-president-white-house-washington-return-sky-news-live-biden-blog-13209921?postid=8967266#liveblog-body

This video from Sky News clearly shows him clutching his heart first, before then putting his arm out to the crowd and saying "my heart goes out to you ".
