Some people on here really haven't ever read 'Hitler's Willing Executioners', and it shows.

Some people on here haven’t read very much beyond the internet and the daily mail.

Indeed. Many autocrats have been the subject of downright adoration by their people - their vast majority... but having the majority behind you does not make everything ok! There is a real misunderstanding nowadays of what democracy is for and what it means. It is not the tyranny of the people aka mob rule.

To the idiots saying he has nothing against Jewish people, therefore he's not a Nazi:

It's a FASCIST salute. Jewish people aren't the 'dogs' they want to get rid of, this time it's the brown people, Muslim people etc.

I honestly wouldn’t assume Trump isn’t anti anybody - certainly not Jewish people. Sure he’s (as far as I know) made no antisemitism inferences in the past, but he and Musk are clearly unhinged and have some very clever and nasty minds behind them. He could turn against any group at any time.

Walrusdress · 21/01/2025 09:36

Kendodd · 21/01/2025 08:12

You'd be fine with a whole stadium of people doing this in unison then?

That's not what happened, and it seems unnecessary to make up hypothetical scenarios to try and prove a point. Let's focus on the actual event instead of imagined ones.

StandFirm · 21/01/2025 09:37

v4life · 21/01/2025 09:31

Elon is a huge troll, he looked like he was working on some new meme content. I’m not taking it seriously anyway but I understand why some would be upset.

I think you'll find that when an ideology has killed a sizeable chunk of your ancestors you lose your sense of humour.

DowntonNabby · 21/01/2025 09:38

I think all we can hope is that Trump tires of him quickly and freezes him out before he spread any more of his Nazi hate. Trump will have hated that President Musk was trending on his inauguration day.

crumblingschools · 21/01/2025 09:40

@Walrusdress but would you be happy if a whole stadium does it? Wouldn’t put it past some supporters adopting it, and if it was just a throwing his heart to the crowd gesture why couldn’t they adopt it. But let’s face it if any supporters do adopt it will be quite obvious why they are doing it

RedToothBrush · 21/01/2025 09:41

One of the features of fascism and totalitarianism in general is to destroy the truth.

There was a deliberate and active pattern of saying one thing, then denying it was said and then saying the exact opposite.

Destruction of the ability to identify the truth disempowers the masses.

This is well studied and well understood.

If we accept that Musk is hugely intelligent, and understood the value of buying up the modern means of communication, then you have to ask why and whether he understands power and authoritarianism.

Musk doing a salute and then denying it, is completely consistent with known authoritarian techniques.

Now now let’s not assume the future minds of others, that sounds oppressive to me.

1dayatatime · 21/01/2025 09:44

I am incredibly worried about the growing rise in Nazism.

First it was Elon Musk then Kamala Harris and then even Santa.

Jeez even the lollipop lady on the school drop this morning gave a loud "halt" and what was clearly a full on deliberate Nazi salute which made me think I should inform on her to the school- but would "informing" on her also make me a Nazi?

I am now worried that if I reach up to grab items off supermarket shelves that I could also unwittingly become a Nazi?

Clearly worrying times...

@brunettemic - tell me exactly what hitler did to rise to power which is the same as what trump farage etc are doing? You are talking utter nonsense. Tell me Hitler's game plan from the 1920s to the point at which his party was elected. Exactly what he did, how he liased with other parties in power and other elected officials. Exactly what his policies were. And why. And then draw parallels to what is being done today. And then report back. Thank you!

I have multiple questions. When is my essay due? What’s the required word count? Is it formal coursework or part of the learning, i.e. does it count towards my grade? The question you’ve set has multiple parts, what is the primary focus of the essay, it feels like you want a hypothesis proved?
Also, if you read my post I didn’t say it’s what Trump is doing, I said it’s important to understand what has happened in the past. I’m not sure why you’re so triggered by it.

MsJinks · 21/01/2025 09:47

He said he's not Hitler, he said it's a tired trope. Well he's not Hitler, but it's not a tired trope, it's one worth watching out for so nothing like that happens again.
He obviously wouldn't want to be Hitler, Musk is apparently ND, but in anyone's book it literally didn't end well for Hitler, his plans did not come to fruition and he's gone down in history in the worst possible way. Musk would surely want to see his own plans work and go down in history as the guy who conquered Mars, and possibly saved the USA, maybe the West.
What we do see for sure are the basic similarities in beliefs and aims - some people are better than others. I'm not sure why everyone thinks that as Trump has Jewish relatives it negates his or Musk's absolute othering of other ethnicities, or even just othering of general humans they don't find 'useful', (aside from at rallies), or why people forget Hitler did attack other groups in his aim for Aryans reigning supreme. It actually smacks of 'I'm not racist I have a '...' friend'.
Musk is fairly clear on what type of person should be in charge, what type of kids should he born/raised, and how some immigrants are useful for low pay in Silicon Valley and others can go.
His salute, to those who can see, is very reminiscent of the Seig Heil salute - if we didn't have that reference then it looked like a 'power salute' - not here's my heart ffs. But we do have that reference and Musk has bought into the basic themes of that reference.
He is never going to stand on stage and say he wants to be Hitler - he doesn't - he wants to be a successful Musk. But what he says/does is out there and it's time we believed what he's 'telling us', and do what we can about it from there.

guaranteedpersonality · 21/01/2025 02:48

Have people on here actually not seen the full video (rather than the deceptively edited one) or are they genuinely pretending that the context of him saying to the crowd ‘my heart goes out to you’ , then sticking his hand over his heart and ‘throwing’ it to the crowd isn’t relevant?
watch it - it’s not ambiguous at all.

You’ve sort of missed the sentence immediately after throwing his heart out about future of civilisation. Which is a white supremacist thing that is a reference to the 14 words based on Mein Kampf.

He makes what looks like a Nazi salute while quoting white supremacists, he supports AfD and openly stated that Jewish communities push hatred against white people was the absolute truth. The context doesn’t look great for being an accidental Nazi salute really.

anotherside · 21/01/2025 09:49

Trump/Musk is more a political cult than mainstream party. Scary to think that there are, at minimum, millions of his supporters who would probably excuse literally anything he says or did and follow any order he gave.

Grimly ironic that the only time in modern history where Americans right to bear arms seems like a good idea is right now under this extremely volatile and aggressive right wing President.

These stills are nothing like the video and Musk's gesture.

I think saying it’s a fascist salute would actually cause less arguing. It’s the throwing around of the word ‘Nazi’ that pisses everyone off as I dont think these people are Nazis. Fascists - possibly.

On a different note, don't know if I should laugh or cry that targeted advertising made this appear on the thread as I was typing:

Elon musk salute
anotherside · 21/01/2025 09:56

Scrabbelator · 21/01/2025 09:50

But...

Every adult on Earth has made that action at some point in some completely innocent context (measuring, demonstrating the level of something abstract, pointing, stretching, even waving etc). Very very few people have done what Musk did at that event. At least not since the 1940s.

ChristmasFluff · 21/01/2025 09:56

@Scrabbelator Look at the videos those are taken from - they are obvious waves.

Yet the right wing twats say Musk's Nazi salute is being taken out of context. PROJECTION.

NotAnotherBirthday · 21/01/2025 09:56

Only one of two things can be true, imo:

  1. He did it deliberately
  2. He did it accidentally without realising the context in which it would be seen and is, therefore, a fucking moron.

1 seems far more likely than 2, to me.
