The Independent says he responded to the criticism of the gesture in a post on X. 'Frankly they need better dirty tricks. The "everyone is Hitler" attack is so tired'.
So he's unapologetic.

Except he edited the footage from Fox News to take out the Nazi salute before he shared it on his X account. If he meant it to be an innocent shout-out, if there was no fascist agenda behind it, why not let the footage run in full?

He's a very, very clever man. He knows exactly what he's doing and he's sleepwalking Trump and America and a lot of the posters on here judging by the apology posts into shaping US society exactly as he thinks it should be run – under race and gender apartheid.

@brunettemic - tell me exactly what hitler did to rise to power which is the same as what trump farage etc are doing? You are talking utter nonsense. Tell me Hitler's game plan from the 1920s to the point at which his party was elected. Exactly what he did, how he liased with other parties in power and other elected officials. Exactly what his policies were. And why. And then draw parallels to what is being done today. And then report back. Thank you!

With every respect, it's very naive to think that, if he isn't copying Hitler's game plan he isn't following similar ideals.

Then post a video of you doing it. If it’s so harmless come on what are you waiting for.

Why do people keep saying this shit over and over again? Why don't YOU post a picture of yourself on here? I've never ever seen a thread (bar a few style and beauty) where someone has put a photo of themselves on MN. But you think you're so clever with your supposed "gotcha".

  1. Appealed to numerous demographics by saying the Weimar Republic was an untrustworthy establishment ruled by the elites (also Jews). See your “pro people” post. See constant rhetoric by Trump, Musk and Farage on being lied to and how they are the ones who defend free speech.
  2. Used propaganda masterfully to aim their messages to the worries of the people at the time - inflation, immigration, nationalism, weak military. See Trump, Farage, Musk.
  3. Initially viewed as a bit of a joke figure, especially in the early 1920s when the economy was stable. Grew in popularity when people started to lose faith in the government and Hitler was able to capitalise on this. See Farage and Trump.
  4. Volksgemeinschaft - People’s community for Germans only based on race primarily. See Farage, Trump, Musk.
  5. Hitler made very important links with the German media moguls of the day and big business owners. See Trump and Musk.
  6. Negative cohesion - people voted for Hitler to keep the communists out. Look at the scaremongering about the left and the “wokes”.

There are quite a lot of parallels I would say.

Gosh.Throwing your hand forward from the heart is a gesture. As he is so awkward and wooden etc it came across wrong. Yes socially awkward people often make gaffes in real life they aren't normally hauled across the coals for it nowadays.

Aaahh, poor little socially awkward Elon who owns one of the worlds biggest social media platforms on which he abuses random strangers, and fans the flames of racial division and mass deportations. Poor little guy.

bombastix · 21/01/2025 09:24

It's a pretty good gotcha though

RareLemur · 21/01/2025 09:24

People are excusing it saying that it is a "roman salute".
To my mind this is absolute bollocks, the roman salute as depicted in statues is not as rigid (arm is not ramrod straight, hand is facing downwards but not as rigidly straight with fingers together) and at a lower angle.
There is also the aspect of context, Elon Musk is not a roman soldier living in ancient Rome and the gesture he has used has been known as a facist salute for decades now. I find unbelievable he would not be aware what a nazi salute looks like. Similarly if he showed up with a swastika tatoo, nobody would believe the "what are you talking about? That's not a nazi symbol, it is an aniconic symbol for the Buddha"

ilovemoney · 21/01/2025 08:15

No, in Russia gangsters and kgb agents came to power. Business men had to toe the line or else.

Where is the contradiction?
Authoritarian regimes of whatever ilk thrive on lack of transparency, corruption (the 'order' that autocrats restore is just corruption made to work to their advantage).
Gangsters and autocrats are all the same species in my view. Autocrats are just gangsters with armies.

I couldn't believe what I saw! Why would he do that and more importantly, where is the uproar?

> where is the uproar?
Outwith the US

if you’re right leaning there are no allowances made for disabilities.

ToffeeForEveryone · 21/01/2025 09:25

I was willing to give benefit of the doubt but then I watched the video. He does that thing they all do with steepling his hands right before it too.

Musk is a prominent public figure and a smart guy. He knows his gestures and speech will be watched closely. He knew exactly what he was doing and what it meant and it was intentional. Celebratory, even.

I’m not the one defending nazis.

You don’t need to post it on here but i want everyone who’s defending this to start doing it. Start posting videos of yourself on social media doing it. Start doing it in the office, start doing it when you see your friends.

Come on, show us, if we’re all so hysterical and it’s just harmless, you do it.

bombastix · 21/01/2025 09:24

It's a pretty good gotcha though

Not really- it’s been clear from his posting on Twitter the last couple of years the sort of politics he supports. He would have comfortably been a BNP supporter previously.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 21/01/2025 09:26

I'm amazed that people believe Elon who is a brilliant man, is just too stupid to understand what he was doing.

He got into the White House, but his autism makes him do the Nazi salute?

You can't seriously believe this was an accident?

You're literally just repeating the same shit over and over again. Show me where someone has defended Nazis? You can't just make that type of accusation.

The Roman Salute

The Roman salute, also known as the Fascist salute, is a gesture in which the right arm is fully extended, facing forward, with palm down and fingers touching

from Wikipedia but other sources are avaialble

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_salute

bombastix · 21/01/2025 09:28

@ThejoyofNC - it puts the focus right back on the person who says it is harmless. But the poster who says it's fine is gutless. So it's smart as hell

LizzieSiddal · 21/01/2025 09:28

Having watched the video again, the first time he does the gesture, I can kind of understand some niave posters and apologists interpreting it as him touching his hear and saying thank you. The second gesture where he turns his back to the camera is 100% an unapologetic Nazi salute.

thepariscrimefiles · 21/01/2025 09:29

fixingmylife · 20/01/2025 22:57

What do you think is the plan?

To signal that this is a fascist, totalitarian government.

HolidayBrochure · 21/01/2025 09:29

To the idiots saying he has nothing against Jewish people, therefore he's not a Nazi:

It's a FASCIST salute. Jewish people aren't the 'dogs' they want to get rid of, this time it's the brown people, Muslim people etc.

SallyWD · 21/01/2025 09:30

On day one people are already defending a Nazi salute.

WhatterySquash · 21/01/2025 09:30

I’ve just watched it expecting it to be a hand on heart then a wave/greeting gesture that looks like a Nazi salute inadvertently. I don’t think it was. It was very sudden, deliberate and looked premeditated, and had no waving or acknowledging type function. It was just a salute - recognisably of the nazi variety! What he meant by it I don’t know. But given his previous antics and statements it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s either being deliberately provocative, or has full blown, maybe drug-fuelled megalomania. His support for the far right recently has been clear and he seemed very OTT and agitated at the ceremony.

He’s making Trump look sober and reasonable in comparison which I never thought I’d see.

fromthevault · 21/01/2025 09:31

Some people on here really haven't ever read 'Hitler's Willing Executioners', and it shows.

v4life · 21/01/2025 09:31

Elon is a huge troll, he looked like he was working on some new meme content. I’m not taking it seriously anyway but I understand why some would be upset.
