Dreadful!

😁

When all of you keep quiet about nazi salutes and sentiments like "Pity that Hitler didnt complete the job" because the people saying this belong to a 'victim' demographic.

I agree that it was a very carefully planned and rehearsed, dog whistle Nazi salute.

Rewindpresse · 21/01/2025 04:32

You can’t watch the video and deny they were nazi salutes. I feel sick.

Allihavetodoisdream · 21/01/2025 04:42

I didn’t used to understand how the Nazis came to power, but the last decade or so in politics has changed that. Threads like this are good illustrations of how people deny, deflect, and minimise far-right rhetoric and behaviour even when it is staring them in the face. Sad!

Dibbydoos · 21/01/2025 04:51

I suppose we'll never know if he was trying to do a gesture of a plane take off, a dab or a Nazi arm gesture gone wrong.

I don't think it was a Nazi salute but an indication of the only way is up.

I fear for the people of the USA esp women...

ThatSchoolOfficeLady · 21/01/2025 05:29

America shits the bed, we all get to lie in it.

Seeing as he’s not Yazz, it’s pretty obvious it was a Nazi salute. Also, if you don’t want to look like you’re doing a Nazi salute, I always find it’s best to not do a Nazi salute.

Yes, same. It was always so beyond belief that that level of evil could prevail. But now I 100% get how it happened. To be honest, I think there are less people now that would resist or even care. Last time around people fought for the greater good, I don’t think that’s something I would expect to see based on the attitudes of today.

FagsMagsandBags · 21/01/2025 05:53

Applecharm25 · 21/01/2025 01:20

Do you really think it doesn't look like a nazi salute?

Because I wasn't a hater.

I really liked Elon musk. I was a fan. I loved all his technology innovations

And I think it looks like a nazi salute.

I was being sarcastic, it's definitely a nazi salute and the people saying "haters gonna hate" are imagining some hive mind who all mindlessly think the same thing and come at it from the same place which just isn't true. You were a fan, I never was but still taken aback by his behaviour.

SpidersAreShitheads · 21/01/2025 05:56

It would be nice if we could exchange views on this without posters getting instantly jumped on as Nazi sympathisers if they express any doubts. This kind of binary thinking is partly why the orange bellend got voted into power in the first place.

Not being absolutely certain doesn't mean you support Trump or his new lapdog, Musk.

I have watched the video countless times now. I'm still undecided what the actual fuck Musk was doing, tbh.

If you watch the extended video which involves Musk walking onto stage just before the weird salute, you can see he's really pumped up. He does this strange dance with double fist pumps. It's bloody odd - even for Musk.

Worth mentioning that I'm autistic/ADHD and I often gesture wildly and enthusiastically. Admittedly I've never done anything resembling a Nazi salute. But I find it hard to work out what I'm doing with my limbs sometimes, especially my arms - I have so many bruises from walking into things, and I regularly fling things across the room by mistake when I'm talking. So an awkward gesture isn't out of the question - especially if you see how weirdly wired he is with the strange dancing literally just before the salute.

I think that it's just about feasible that he might have been attempting an impassioned "from my heart to yours" or similar type of gesture.

I also hear him say something like "thank you from my heart" or words to that effect, which backs up assertions that it's just an oddly awkward gesture.

When he makes the salute he makes a strange grunting sound - which again, suggests that it was some kind of impassioned gesture to symbolise sending out his emotions/thanks etc.

And yet.....

The things that make me question this though is the strangely flat palm. No pointing to the audience, or sweeping motion. The flat downward palm is a strange one - especially as we all know exactly what this symbolises. It's not really associated with anything else and surely it would instantly bring to mind a Nazi salute?

When I've made a weird accidental gesture, I'm acutely aware of what I've done instantly and how awkward I've been - the last thing I'd do is repeat it!! But Musk did it a second time.

And more importantly, we know that Musk is a fanboy of the far right and has expressed admiration for extreme right wing views. He also comes from a childhood of apartheid South Africa.

So that would suggest that maybe it WAS deliberate?

But then again, he's cut out the weird salute from the video on his own posts on Twitter. If he'd done a double Nazi salute, that's pretty blatant, why wouldn't he be sharing it? He's not one to shy away from criticism.

But then he's not denied it in his post either? Surely you'd be out there denying any likeness to make it clear that it's not a Nazi salute?

Trump is such a corrupt individual with no interest beyond what benefits him, and utterly despicable views in many areas. Musk is willing to align himself with those views and has showed sympathy for a move even further to the right. That makes it really hard to give them the benefit of the doubt and to be scrupulously fair - but I am trying.

I can't honestly be sure either way. And that's the fairest thing I can say. I think you could make an honest argument for either interpretation.

I don't know if I'm naive, overthinking this, or just making it too complicated? I'm not persuaded that is definitely IS a Nazi salute but I'm also not persuaded that it isn't, especially given what we know about Musk's background and views.

What I do know is that the combination of Trump and Musk is dangerous and right now, I worry what's going to happen. Voting Trump in was a horrible, horrible move and that's been compounded by his new close bromance with Musk.

This clip here shows the dancing, just in case you haven't seen this bit of the Musk performance:

amber763 · 20/01/2025 23:27

Don't be ridiculous. He has Asperger's and was waving his hands in excitement. Stop making things up.

He put his hand to his heart, then threw his hand up in a salute- first to the crowd; then to the flag. It wasn’t a wave, it was a very determined gesture.

Hedgerow2 · 21/01/2025 06:02

I think I'm more disturbed by the fact that straight after the 'gesture' whatever it is, Musk says that its thanks to the people who voted Trump in that 'the future of civilisation is secured'. WTAF?!

boltt · 21/01/2025 06:21

AfraidToRun · 20/01/2025 23:19

Hes a massive idiot but I don't think he knew what he did. I think he meant to throw his heart into the crowd but totally misjudged it. Don't get me wrong, he's a terrible human being but doing in on purpose would have no point, so I find is less plausible.

He does say 'my heart goes out to you'

Im not so sure it was a nazi salute

Lostmyusernametoday · 21/01/2025 06:27

But it’s ok because now there’s only two genders so who cares if they’re nazi, women haters? Oh wait……

people are so so predictably stupid. Play on one issue that means in reality nada in your day to day life and you end up with this.

WhereAreWeNow · 21/01/2025 06:34

It certainly looked like a Nazi salute. Twice.

BarkPench · 21/01/2025 06:38

yes exactly. Musk, Trump , alll the other zillionaires desperately sucking up, they’re all just seeing how far they can push things now suddenly there’s a green light to behave in the most financially and politically self serving ways possible.

Musk is a clever man. He would know what he’s doing with that gesture and what it looks like: OK he might not want the ‘nazi sympathiser’ label to stick to him because he wants to feel too clever and original a thinker for that, but equally he’s not making any clear apology or denial statement outlining that he takes an opposite position to that. He’s supports far right parties actively.

He’s not actively using clear words to deny he’s politically saying what his actions would imply he is saying.,Anyone who was horrified by nazism would be absolutely mortified and speaking out to explain themselves and obviously speaking against Nazi ideology. His response is just to sneer at those who use their own eyes to observe what they have seen him do. Awful.

Adamante · 21/01/2025 06:40

It wasn't a Nazi salute, obviously 🙄. People (especially lefty MNetters) want to pretend it was because they love the drama of it all and want to pretend Trump and his cohort are uniquely evil. Absolutely ridiculous thread.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/01/2025 06:44

It certainly looked weird but I'm not buying into them being anti-Semitic due to their close ties with Isreal.

HoraceCope · 21/01/2025 06:50

shocking
i agree it is not necessarily a nazi salute, he points to his heart first, but is being viewed that way

CatLady476 · 21/01/2025 06:55

If it wasn't in the context of his support for far right groups, I'd be willing to consider that it might be an accident in the heat of the moment (have ASD folks only family). But in that context...I think it's a case of "When someone shows you who they are, believe them."

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 21/01/2025 07:01

I just thought absolute twat. The man is just a moron( with money to burn).

This thread is so bonkers. He was clearly touching his heart and throwing it and he then said he was throwing his heart out there.
he is awkward and has autism.
he is not a politician.
he is a genius and is massively generous to charities.
he has recently visited auchwitz
seriously what are you all on.

He's not and never has been a "genius". He hasn't invented anything, just bought into companies with the tech already in development, or pays someone else to invent it.

He is a fascist though.

Agreed, and it's really sad. Dh and I have been saying pretty much this for that last few years.
