Has he really done a nazi salute in the trump inauguration celebration? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Trump has been walking round with his fist in the air for a while, and supporters copying him

I thought that looked like the start of a salute symbol, and even commented to my mum that I bet his team wanted him to have a hitler-style gesture that people would follow

Then this happened. 👀

HoraceCope · 21/01/2025 07:16

he would have been safer to do a fist pump

Bringmeahigherlove · 21/01/2025 07:24

guaranteedpersonality · 21/01/2025 03:26

🙄
It’s not.

It is concerning to see people fall into the same mistakes they made during Trump’s first Presidency. I would have hoped lessons were learned so that if a situation arises that merits criticism of Trump his critics have maintained their legitimacy and not wasted it on easily disprovable clickbait like this.

Easily disprovable…..inserts an “unedited” version from X. Come on. Open your eyes.

Luminousalumnus · 21/01/2025 01:15

And these?

If you can provide a video of them extending their right hand in what people take to be a Nazi salute, I’ll believe you.

MsJinks · 21/01/2025 07:29

The saying on many MN threads is 'when he shows you who he is, believe him'. He did these salutes and has not subsequently even suggested a reason himself - he's happy enough to let everyone decide for themselves. Apparently this saying only applies to average Joes then.
I was shocked to see this happen, but now more shocked it's not just being accepted as what millions of people saw but reinterpreted by many, many people on Elon's behalf - excused in fact without knowing him or even hearing his own opinion on it. His heart thing was definitely said after his 'arm waving' l, not alongside, and very much directly related to his civilisation comments.
This Auschwitz and Israeli hostages sounds suspiciously very much like 'I'm not racist, my mate is ...' . The ASD excuses - I mean seriously. It is scary to read these random excuses - normally shouted down on a thread about the average asshole.
Personally, I could think it's arisen as part of his natural inclination under exciting and possibly drug addled circumstances and he's left it unexplained as a test, or that it was very intentional and he was testing it out very deliberately. However, I will just accept what I actually saw with my own eyes, and also accept I cannot know what Elon's reason was for doing this but he's shown me who he is and that's enough.

The Democrats have been in power for at least half of the last decade, they need to look at why the vote has gone like this. Why ordinary people are turning to the likes of trump and musk.

I hate this argument. "The other people didn't do a good enough job of convincing me not to vote for fascists".

Yes, ‘Ordinary people’ need to look at whether they want to live under fascist regimes.

Arayofcalm · 21/01/2025 07:31

Any right minded person who felt they were 'mistsken' for doing a nazi salute, would clarify that they didn't mean to, the first chance they could.

Elon has been posting on X since then, no doubt watching the uproar but has remained silent. Why?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/01/2025 07:36

Because he knows on social media it is pointless to try and explain or deny anything.

Whimsicalgrape · 21/01/2025 07:36

Lightswitchup · 21/01/2025 07:30

I don't think they realise, or if they do they don't care as long as "their side" are winning. Like I said, they double down on their views normally.

He has reposted someone referring to it as 'the salute hoax' but not explaining anything about why he did it.

Elon musk salute
Whimsicalgrape · 21/01/2025 07:40

He could literally goose step down the street and claim it was a smear campaign. He's a twat.

AspiringChatBot · 21/01/2025 07:41

Someone in Musk's position knows better than to make a Nazi (or Nazi-like) salute by accident. But that's not the point that will get taken away by his (and Trump's) supporters - it's that he was willing and able to say "this is nonsense" rather than produce a laborious groveling fake apology saying he didn't MEAN to offend and will now go educate himself.

Musk can't openly admit that he made a Nazi salute (twice) at a Trump rally, even if he wants segments of the public to believe that he did. Trump's been pretty clear about having no time for antisemitism - if only because his fave child and several of his grandchildren are Jewish. The ADL said it doesn't appear to be a Nazi salute, or at least not an intentional one - which is one informed opinion and certainly gives Trump and others leeway to ignore the incident. They may be mistaken and certainly people can and do disagree, but Alexandria Ocasio Cortez going on to say this means no one should ever listen to the ADL about anything is also damaging (and transparent). This has become a political football and so we have to ask - what are we being distracted from seeing?

And in the United States, bigot racist is ushered into office on Martin Luther King day. Surreal.

The change in Presidential administration, and therefore Inauguration Day, always falls on 20 Jan according to the 20th Amendment to the US Constitution. MLK Day was originally celebrated on 15 Jan (Dr. King's birthday), but as a US Federal holiday it was set to the third Monday of January under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act so that it would always be part of a "long weekend". It's just a coincidence that they were the same date this year, but neither could have been changed.

I'm sorry to stereotype, but he is a white South African who grew up under Apartheid. They're obviously not all racist, but for every white South African anti racist, I've met at least five white South African racists.

IME, it's (some) SA'ns that left after the end of Apartheid that tend to be racist; plenty of fairly egalitarian whites in SA now and people left DURING Apartheid in many cases because they didn't support it. Elon Musk is a knucklehead, but his dad was a politician and activist for the Progressive Party, which was the furthest left party in South Africa’s Parliament pre-1991 and led - for decades, alone in the context of the all-white Parliament - the party political fight to dismantle Apartheid. I doubt Musk Jr. was fully indoctrinated in pro-Apartheid rhetoric even if most white South Africans his age were. South Africa keeps coming up - even Steve Bannon did his duster about too many (former) SA'ns in US politics - but it's more likely that the call is coming from inside the house. Musk's attitudes about race seem more Silicon Valley Bro than Pretoria Bro to me.

It wasn't a Nazi salute, obviously 🙄. It wasn't obvious to Haaretz. People (especially lefty MNetters) want to pretend it was because they love the drama of it all and want to pretend Trump and his cohort are uniquely evil. Some righties apparently want to pretend that, too - appreciatively, not pejoratively.

But it’s ok because now there’s only two genders so who cares if they’re nazi, women haters? Don't be disingenuous; (most) people are capable of granular thinking. I think it's great that Boris Johnson went to Kiev and walked around with Zelenskyy; that doesn't suddenly erase my pro-EU history and politics and turn me ⚡⚡snap! zap! ping! ⚡into a big Brexiteer. Every party does a mix of positive and negative things no matter what your political perspective. people are so so predictably stupid. Indeed. Play on one issue that means in reality nada in your day to day life and you end up with this. Women's rights are intrinsically important to roughly half of the population, because women are human. But that's (mostly) not why people voted for Trump, nor why Trump appointed Musk.

Greenkindness · 21/01/2025 07:42

Deny
Attack
Reverse victim and offender.

This is what I’m thinking.

This will be ‘our’ problem as he goes forward.

Shudacudawuda · 21/01/2025 07:45

Yeah it was a Nazi salute, and Caitlin Jenner is a woman 🙄🙄🙄

People are actually insane if they believe this. What has social media done to people's rational thought, my goodness. Just watch the video, it is immediately apparent this was not a salute of any kind. But then, people do actually believe that men are women if they say they are so I'm not sure why I'm so surprised they'd get sucked into this nonsense too. This is exactly why Trump won. Thanks very much you lunatics.

HPFA · 21/01/2025 07:45

Why would anyone be surprised at this? Look at what Twitter has become. Look at his support for the AFD. Look at him encouraging the overthrow of an elected British government.

I don't think there's much excuse for anyone remaining on Twitter frankly. Bluesky does have it's sanctimonious side but blocking is easy and it's not difficult to form a community on there on any subject.

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2025 07:47

Let's not forget he has also decided to fund Tommy Robinson's legal campaign.

Good point.

fromthevault · 21/01/2025 07:48

I've watched that video many times now, and the second salute is even clearer, imo. There is no way on earth that is a 'throwing gesture' - his palm is completely flat and outstretched.

He knew exactly what he was doing.

Greenkindness · 21/01/2025 07:52

I can’t wait for Badenoch, Jenrick, Truss, Farage etc to come and tell us it absolutely was not a Nazi salute and we’re the ones on drugs if we think so.

Even the Daily Mail comments section thinks it’s a Nazi salute. If you’ve lost them …

Kendodd · 21/01/2025 07:53

Has he spoken about this yet?
I think he should clarify that it was not a Nazi salute and accept that it looked like a Nazi salute and issue a real grovelling apology. Make it really clear this was not the intention (if it wasn't) and that people shouldn't do it.

As I said up thread, I think the danger is it being copied and adopted as the MAGA salute. All those posters bending over backwards to defend this and insisting that it is completely innocent and is in no way a Nazi salute or anything like one. You're fine with whole stadiums of cheering fans doing this in unison then? After all, it's not a Nazi salute?

Walrusdress · 21/01/2025 07:54

Did you watch the video? He's not doing a salute, he says thank you, presses on his heart and flings his arm out to the crowd, turns around and does it again.

He’s apparently posted a video with that bit edited out (can you imagine the text to his member of staff about that?). I’m trying not to go on Twitter anymore so I don’t want to look.

Kendodd · 21/01/2025 07:55

For what it's worth, I don't think Musk did this deliberately, I think he might look on it as a lucky accident though.

Who hasn't done an accidental Nazi salute from time to time?

It doesn't even look like one.
