With Starmer now, apparently being the most unpopular PM we've ever had - and all the things he's done since they got into power, are you still pleased you voted for them?

Yes I voted Labour and yes I'm still pleased I did. Well I wasn't gonna vote Tory 😂 labour were the only viable opposition.

I would vote Labour again. The Country is an absolute shit show after 14 years of Tory mismanagement, it’s going to take a long time to make things even a tiny bit better. They have made some mistakes, but no one is perfect and I think they’re a thousand times better than the Tories.

Agreed

Marvellous, let’s drag WW2 into this 🙄

It’s actually relevant- one word - NATO. The UK isn’t able to defend itself in the event of a conflict. The UK armed forces depend on NATO, whom are very much dependent on the USA.
If Trump throws his toys out his pram on the USA paying into NATO, it could very much harm NATOs defence.

America is quite self sufficient, it has its own industries. We have to all be honest and admit the UK needs the USA. Trump or not.

Paul 2023 is making the point that he/she thinks we need the USA to be on our side. Does it matter if the comparison that was used was WW2? We sure needed them then.

Edit to say I was still typing this when Paul posted the one above.

Blinkingbonkers · 08/01/2025 22:50

I am really, really worried about the economy - how people are not realising how bad the budget was is mind boggling….. Truss/kwarteng were ousted for a lesser f-up…

Indeed. WW2 started over one country, invading another. In Europe. Over time of course, the war only started when Poland was invaded.
The USA only entered because of other factors, 2 years later.

If the US had t entered WW2, it’s likely the allied forces wouldn’t have won and a deal would could have been made between Russia and Hitler. Europe would have been under a fascist regime.

The UK needs the USA. We’re just fortunate that the special relationship exists under good will from them because historically they like us. Other than that , America doesn’t really need us for anything, military wise or even trade wise .Our main expert to them is whiskey! I’m sure they can survive without that.

My point is Trump is about to be President again and he knows what Labour said about him before he was elected and in recent years. Musk has been busy sending reminder tweets too.

Labour need to tread carefully around Trump.

Surely it’s way too early to assess how effective this government will be? The economy was already struggling and they’ve taken over the hot seat at a very challenging time locally and globally.

I am certain we did the right thing, as a country, calling Labour up from the subs bench and giving the Conservatives time out. Plus, going left when other countries are going right might not be a bad thing either.

So far I have found Starmer to be intelligent, informed and considered. I don’t think popularity at this point in his term is important at all.

My biggest concern right now is the bullying language coming out of the US. The thought of further disruption to global political systems is frightening.

You saved me typing a post.

Do you mean that Labour should rise up and oust Keir?
Who do you think would make a better leader?

Araminta1003 · 09/01/2025 09:21

I think Starmer is really ill advised to go ahead and try and get the Chagos islands deal through before Trump is in. At what cost?

Araminta1003 · 09/01/2025 09:24

Reeves is completely out of her depth. She is not qualified for the job. They needed a really well qualified economist with years of financial markets experience in this job. Everything flows from the economy doing better. Our borrowing costs today are shocking. They cannot sit back and assume we cannot actually go bust as a country, they always have to have that at the back of their mind. Economics first, ideology after that, if there is the budget for it.

Araminta1003 · 09/01/2025 09:24

Labour should not oust Keir, but Reeves needs to go.

I consider the Chagos deal to be essentially treasonous.

The updates today are dire but I can’t see who would replace either of them in Labour, maybe they’ll both keep each other in

OneAmberFinch · 09/01/2025 09:25

How does this deal differ from the one the Tory’s were going to sign just before the election?

Araminta1003 · 09/01/2025 09:29

“Plus, going left when other countries are going right might not be a bad thing either.”

I think all this “left” and “right” bullshit needs to stop. I don’t give a monkeys about political ideology. I want an economically competent Government that acts in the best interests of the country as a whole and the majority. I also want a steady unemotional leader who is not swayed by Trump, distracted by ideology and ignores the hard left or hard right in their party completely and puts the country and economy above party political interests.

Araminta1003 · 09/01/2025 09:32

“How does this deal differ from the one the Tory’s were going to sign just before the election?”

I do not care about what is the Tories or Labour’s fault etc - all I care about is what is best for the country. Rushing a deal through with Trump about to get in, not good! So I ask, at what cost?

Legoninjago1 · 09/01/2025 09:33

They are all in way over their heads. Desperately trying to look competent but it's clear they really are not. Totally over promoted. Starmer is a huge disappointment.

Araminta1003 · 09/01/2025 09:35

I think it is very difficult in this environment to be a politician because it is all so fast moving. You have to understand the market and be a great politician at the same time and you need to move fast when it matters but not get rattled, when it does not, nor get distracted. They need the best CEO types in the job essentially. But with some morality/principles. These career politicians should be finished for good. It does not work anymore.

EasternStandard · 09/01/2025 10:11

The speaker has granted an urgent question on market turmoil

People still distracted by Musk and current media cycle

Reeves will say the usual but @Legoninjago1 might have it in that post

Araminta1003 · 09/01/2025 10:14

Starmer has the wrong team around him completely and needs to reshuffle urgently. Lammy a deadweight too!

Look Trump is in and UK’s role has always been as a middle man between US and Europe. It is critical Starmer gets that. So what if he has to slime out to the Musk/Trump ego - he needs to play chess and the long game. We cannot end up as their pawns, but Trump/Musk are emotional about the UK, giving them the right signals will ease the rift quickly.
Chagos has to stay with the UK for now. We simply cannot afford the extra billions now anyway.

The Quantitive Tightening is not working!
Clearly the Oxford PPE course is more Politics and Philosophy than bloody Economics, Rachel Reeves. And very clearly is lacking in Maths!

I wonder now that the holy Guardian is reporting same thing the Times + Telgraph + every other paper have been reporting, that Labour die hards will finally accept the trouble the economy is in?
I also see Truss has issued a cease and desist on Labour about their claims that she crashed the economy when they have done exactly the same thing. She must be sat at home laughing her head off at their performance and having conversations around karma.
Reeves should be calling for her own resignation!
