What other ways could Rachel Reeves have raised more money?

As a former small business owner (thankfully former!), the additional costs would have crippled our company.
But according to some posters on MN, we should just have sucked them up from our profits and if we could not afford to do so, should not have been running a business in the first place. If only life were as simple as some (who clearly have never run a business) seem to think it is.

Anyway, I wondered if any other posters would like to contribute to a thread of suggestions of alternative ways money could have been raised. Specifics if possible, not general Tax The Rich type posts.

I'll go first ...

  1. Restore employees' NI to the level it was before Jeremy Hunt tinkered with it last Budget. We've only had the uplift a few months so the pain would be minimal
  2. Get rid of the pension triple lock and put pensioners on a level footing with other benefits increases.

Benefits limited to two children including child benefit

Why should child benefit be limited to two children? It’s not going to save much money most people aren’t having two dc. Plus it’s not very much money. I think it should be a universal payment as it was in the past.

Those who are having large families often spend money abroad.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/11/2024 08:16

None of the posters on here would have accepted a penny increase on tax quietly.

Certainly not when they're advocating things like euthanasia to save a few bob or charging for NHS appointments to earn money, as these (along with the usual racism) are all specifically on a thread about 'what to do for money'.

But when that's deemed a more acceptable alternative to private school fees VAT or farmers' adult children paying inheritance tax, I think it gives an idea of the posters' true natures.

I don’t understand this reply?

Increase top rate tax to 50% over £200k but allow all people to have their nil band. I know plenty of staff who won't work full time as they lose their tax free element. It grates that they lose it. I have plenty of applicants who ask not to go over £100k.
Carers allowance should not be taxable. It equates to just over £2 per hour. All those who care still have the same duties when they walk through the door after any PAYE job. Surely it costs more to spy on people?
Tax income on BTL houses at a higher rate than PAYE. A second or third+ home tax to stop block buying by landlords. Those with limited companies will remain taxed as a business and need to adhere to adhanced rules and regulations.

Get control of organised crime and illegal immigration. The cost of drugs is killing productivity and costing health and social care £££. I see loads of this..mental health issues caused by drugs, not working, have children get children taken away, children’s placements cost so much. Go and rob a supermarket for more drugs…..etc. Illegal immigration the same, nail bars, car washes, cannabis factories, all running and not paying taxes and running on slave labour which is organised crime. All the politicians do nothing which makes me think that either they are oblivious, frightened or in on it.

Replace council tax with 1% land tax
Increase threshold that start paying stamp duty but increase rate for properties over £1 million
accept nhs doesn’t work and move to a European model

remove triple lock
increase fuel duty
fix benefits so people can’t choose to work part time
Reduce tax free amount for pension lump sum
ni on unearned income

Mirrorxxx · 02/11/2024 08:23

And of course at a minimum rejoin the customs union.

plenty of people earning 200k plus aren’t in PAYE though

Trouble is increase tax on landlords and they pass it on to renters.

Bonnyrowantree · 02/11/2024 08:28

Increase vat to 21%
Increase tax rate on 100k

Sometimes it's healthy to have an honest debate without being accused of racism and/or being a Tory.
So please stop and come up with suggestions instead of trying to shut it
I don't see anyone suggesting euthanasia either

@Mlanket those who don't pay PAYE as high earners working in companies are tax avoiders. I'm C-suite and I always go on the payroll. If you earn big you need to pay. Just my opinion.

My thoughts on landlords are policy issues not budget related so on that one I won't comment further.

Mlanket · 02/11/2024 08:37

Replace council tax with 1% land tax

Agree CT needs reform

Mlanket · 02/11/2024 08:40

@Mrsredlipstick i think there is too much discrepancy between tax on income vs other sources.

I think landlords should be disincentivised but it needs to be in a way renters don’t pay for it.

Stop the boats that is costing the tax payer millions!

"Stop the boats" isn't a policy, it's an aim. You may as well say "get more money". Unless you have a suggestion on how to do it, it's not really meaningful.

Itsmyopinion · 02/11/2024 08:52

Well we could follow what Australia for example anyone who attempts an unauthorised boat voyage to UK will be turned back to their point of departure, returned to their home country, or transferred to a third country for processing.

Itsmyopinion · 02/11/2024 08:53

Follow what Australia do

In on it definitely.

Get control of the black economy. Go after Amazon and other internet-based billionaires.

Taxing people doing the good productive stuff is the wrong way to go.

Mlanket · 02/11/2024 08:57

after Amazon and other internet-based billionaires.

For that you need global tax schemes between countries.

Mlanket · 02/11/2024 08:59

I know lots of middle class professionals who use drugs…

Not necessarily. They could stop Amazon taking the piss. taxjustice.uk/blog/whats-amazons-tax-bill/

Exactly. Raise £££ in fines from random drug wipes.

Mlanket · 02/11/2024 09:36

But that would hit other companies not just Amazon & the governments do want them to have warehouses etc here. Customers should shop in other stores

Starshine8 · 02/11/2024 09:48

I saw the NHS were asking the public for suggestions on improvement and someone suggested turning the thermostat down 1 degree in hospitals. Seems like a good idea to me!

Halfemptyhalfling · 02/11/2024 09:49

Increase petrol tax- petrol really cheap at the moment
Tax on bonuses
Tax on ultra processed foods
Extend bedroom tax to private rented and owned housing or tax by floorspace or by land size
Increase fines for pollution
Tax on megafarms
Tax on online shopping especially cheap import from china
Ed Davey gave a great list on today programme
