Re The Times article: There are non- selective comprehensives and there are non- selective comprehensives. As pp's have said, they're not all equal, especially when you factor in house prices and catchments.

Personally, I'm not too fussed where they went to school - that was up to their parents - but I'm very fussed about how well they run the country.

RobinStrike · 09/07/2024 14:54

I think the changes in women's representation and ages are interesting.

ifonly4 · 11/07/2024 10:50

I really don't care where anyone was educated as long as they're a decent person and can do the job well.

It's been commented on that he went private for Sixth Form - obviously don't know the circumstances but maybe he wanted to. It's exactly what DD wanted to do (she wanted more support in something she was interested in, a different experience and to live away from home!). We really felt it wasn't on our radar, but she did her research, make appointments to view, sat entrance exam (so other than lifts to look at schools and form filling) and ended up with a scholarship in her interest and a bursary. She's just a normal girl, has a massive amount of friends from state, private and uni.

Clearly it is not a good thing that the new government is made up of people who went to a state school. Is this the reason they are so stupid they are trying to pretend there's no difference between the biological sexes?

I'd rather someone was running the country because they had the best education possible, and sadly in this day and age it means private education.

Eh? 93% of the population go to state school. Do you think they are all stupid?
Lots of independents aren’t selective except on how much spare cash you have.
I think it is a good thing more of the cabinet have some idea what life is like for most people.

I'm talking about education, not stupidity. And I stick by my assertions, yes.

Your assertions, Tarquina, are plain yobbishness. It's a shame that you view the vast majority of the country as somehow beneath you because they come from less privileged backgrounds. It says nothing of your intelligence or maturity.

very unpleasant and snobbish comment.

RobinStrike · 14/07/2024 10:14

@Tarquina you assume there is a correlation between where you are educated and your ability to do a good job in government? Why? What evidence do you have? I could point to the number of old Etonians who have been useless to suggest that it is actually the opposite.
You said you aren't suggesting privately educated people are more intelligent, so it has to be something about their schooling you find so impressive. Having worked in both state and independent schools I really don't believe this is true.

Why do you assume I come from a "privileged" background?

Oh I see, you think you're stupid because you went to a state school and therefore everyone else who did, is as incapable of doing an important job. I'm sorry to hear that Tarquina.

RobinStrike · 15/07/2024 18:08

@Tarquina Angela Rayner isn't my favourite member of the Cabinet and the fact she had very little school education doesn't rest your case at all. She also made the most of her life afterwards and is to be admired for her tenacity and hard work. What about everyone else around the table? This is a Cabinet with more Masters and PhD than any other government if you are looking at purely education statistics.

John Major left school at 16 . He did not go to university. He was the son of a circus performer and he had to leave school to support his family

John Major has a fascinating back story. I really recommend listening to the interview he did with Alastair and Rory on TRIP Leading.

He had a reputation for being “Mr Grey” but he comes across as thoughtful, considered, intelligent and with a great sense of humour.

I'm interested in where they send their own children ...

I was about to say the same thing!! And most MPs that went to 'state school' went to grammar schools which tend to be in really expensive areas to buy a house. There aren't many nowadays.

Highly unlikely given that very few parts of the country have grammar schools and there are only 163 of them in the country.

Senior MPs are local MPs, they each represent a constituency. The likelihood that the majority of them attended one of a very small number of schools that only exist in a few parts of the country is infinitesimal.

CurlewKate · 18/07/2024 07:45

Has anyone said that Starmer went to private school yet? He didn't.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 18/07/2024 07:55

Well 10% of them could reasonably be called posh twats, as one has a knighthood and one’s a Baroness…!!

CurlewKate · 18/07/2024 07:45

Has anyone said that Starmer went to private school yet? He didn't.

Sit Keir Starmer went to a grammar school that became independent in his last few years, and he remained there by dint of transitionary rules and a scholarship. So technically he did. And having benefited in the best possible way from a selective and free education as the son of a tool maker (a well paid and technically skilled job, living in leafy Surrey) by becoming a knighted barrister who’s now PM, he would like to make sure that this route, both free and paid for, is denied to others. No wonder he’s got rid of the ‘Levelling Up’ part of government departments. Pull up the ladder jack I’m alright would be more apt ;)

CurlewKate · 18/07/2024 08:15

@Tryingtokeepgoing "Sit Keir Starmer went to a grammar school that became independent in his last few years, and he remained there by dint of transitionary rules and a scholarship. So technically he did. "

Equally, technically he didn't. Shrodinger's Prime Minister.

Incidentally, insisting on calling him "Sir" is an obvious dog whistle that has become tedious.

@Berryberries

Shabana Mahmoud
Failed 11+ in Birmingham went to Small Heath school and then KE Camp Hill I assume for sixth form
Lisa Nandy Parrs Wood High School
Lucy Powell Parrs Wood High School
Peter Kyle Feltham Comprehensive
Steve Reed. Verulam School
Rachel Reeves Cator Park Comprehensive School for Girls

Education background of Starmer’s cabinet is most representative ever of UK society | The Independent

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/starmer-cabinet-education-private-school-parliament-b2575257.html

The Independent article say 92% attended comprehensive school. I researched a few Cabinet members but got bored and searched for an article on the number at comprehensive schools instead.
