If things are so desperate, then people should take out their children.

Well, my child has SEN (autistic and other bits) and by some miracle had managed to make friends. So I decided not to take him out.

Iffx · 06/07/2024 21:47

No I am not expecting sympathy. I am expecting people (particularly those slapping taxes on) to not be ignorant about the current situation inside schools.

Why on earth are you paying good money for your children to have such a poor education?

Then that’s your choice so pay for it, many many SEN parents do not have that option

As above - autistic, but had miraculously had made friends

It was my choice and I am happy with my choice. That doesn't mean it should be taxed.

That's right. So he attended private 6th form.

What do you think he should have done?
Marched out the gate because the school had turned private? Or finish his education where he started it?

I think he should have gone to a different sixth form actually - given his views on private schools. Loads of people change schools for sixth form.

Starmer went to private sixth form. His wife went to private school as well.

it’s not ok to discriminate based on where people went to school op - you’re essentially saying everyone who went to private school is a cunt - just more politely. You need to stop discriminating.

He went to grammar school. Passed the exam. Whilst he was there the school changed to private but they allowed those already there to continue for a bursary.

Why ? Thousands of Sen parents have seen budgets cut to the bone, what the Tories have done to Sen provision in the state sector is criminal. VAT payments could mean those budgets increase and all Sen children have decent provision

ParaParaParaphrase · 06/07/2024 21:56

You should see how many children are SEN with no diagnosis due to insane waiting lists. It’s utter madness.

bellocchild · 06/07/2024 21:56

This makes me cross. I taught at an ordinary school which was attended by a current cabinet minister. The clever pupils did well, as indeed did the less able ones in their chosen paths. The exams are exactly the same for both state and independent schools. Success depends on good teaching and hard work.

Iffx · 06/07/2024 21:57

"VAT payments could mean those budgets increase and all Sen children have decent provision"

You must know that is fanciful. I've fought my guts out for my sen child. 1 or 2 extra teachers per school (which is what 6500 more teachers translates to) will not fix this. It's not earmarked for sen anyway. I thought it was for more maths teachers.

Many private schools still sit IGCSE’s, I’ve examined for both - much easier

I'm interested in where they send their own children ...

Agree! Our MP’s should use state services only - send their children to state schools, use the NHS etc

So you aren’t interested in the many many Sen children who don’t have decent provision due to Tory cuts ?

That's part of my point - many private schools will help, regardless of whether you've got the diagnosis. Many private schools will also expel them sadly.

That isn't what I said at all.

Success depends on a lot of things. Let's not pretend that a child from a deprived background, on benefits and free school meals has the same opportunities as someone at Eton.

Do you not think state parents also ‘fight their guts out’ for their Sen children too ?

Yes, I do. My point was the fighting your guts out isn't going to be solved by an extra teacher.

But you don’t want to pay extra tax, even if it went to help other children ?

LakeTiticaca · 06/07/2024 22:02

There will be less children going to private schools with Kiers levelling down plan

Peterbeardwy · 06/07/2024 22:01

My child has left.

Taxing education is fundamentally wrong.

The money needs to come from other sources.

Do you think for example, that it is better to stick a tax on private education, or to stick a tax on foreign holidays - in order to raise money to help children?

So this comment was false ? You won’t actually be paying tax because your child has left ?

Iffx · 06/07/2024 22:08

I won't be paying it.

The comment "That doesn't mean it should be taxed" still stands.

It should not be taxed.
