OP posts:
upinaballoon · 06/07/2024 20:18

Back to the days of Edward Heath and Margaret Thatcher and I'm not sure about Harold Wilson, but I guess he went to a state school. I'm wondering now where Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and John Major went to school.

Warmfire · 06/07/2024 20:20

Tony Blair went private, not sure about the others

OP posts:
Chemenger · 06/07/2024 20:21

Tony Blair went to Fettes. Very much not state.

Chemenger · 06/07/2024 20:22

Gordon Brown went to a state school in Kirkcaldy.

Chemenger · 06/07/2024 20:24

John Major went to grammar school but left at 15.

Grapesichord · 06/07/2024 20:25

John Major left school at 16 . He did not go to university. He was the son of a circus performer and he had to leave school to support his family

PuttingDownRoots · 06/07/2024 20:27

Is there any breakdown of men vs women, ethnic groups, religion etc? Sort of curious about how representative our parliament actually is.

Its currently 93% children in state schools... 16% more than Parliament

Lifeinlists · 06/07/2024 20:32

Not sure what your point is @Warmfire unless you're treading the well worn path of class warfare.

I don't think it was his school that made Rees Mogg odious. He did it all by himself with a little help from his equally odious father, I imagine. Just my opinion though.

There are plenty of twats in state schools too.

menopausalmare · 06/07/2024 20:34

I don't really care where MPs went to school as long as they can do their job properly.

Same. And can have some attempt at empathy.
Sometimes people who know they don’t understand are more sympathetic than someone who has been through it and survived. So an MP from a council estate/ethnic minority background might think ‘well I’ve done alright, so why do they need extra help?’

Tarquina · 06/07/2024 20:40

Clearly it is not a good thing that the new government is made up of people who went to a state school. Is this the reason they are so stupid they are trying to pretend there's no difference between the biological sexes?

I'd rather someone was running the country because they had the best education possible, and sadly in this day and age it means private education.

I totally agree with you. Rishi Sunak is male and fabulously wealthy and privileged etc, and yet he made that emphatic statement just last week that biological women and girls need and deserve to keep their rights to single sex spaces.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 06/07/2024 20:42

All my local Conservative MPs all went to state schools. Only one of them is still in post, and he is now reform. Having previously been labour too!

blackcherryconserve · 06/07/2024 20:46

I'm interested in where they send their own children ...

Iffx · 06/07/2024 20:55

Starmer went to private sixth form. His wife went to private school as well.

it’s not ok to discriminate based on where people went to school op - you’re essentially saying everyone who went to private school is a cunt - just more politely. You need to stop discriminating.

Iffx · 06/07/2024 20:58

Why is it alright to equate posh=twat as well?

This hateful language will get us nowhere.

Iffx · 06/07/2024 20:59

I've reported your op. The entire body of it is offensive and hateful.

What? Don't be silly. The OP is fine. Rees Mog is a twat.

MyUmberSeal · 06/07/2024 21:07

It’s total inverted snobbery. I’m always astonished at the distaste and apathy shown for wealthy, well educated folk. Makes no sense. If I could go back and be privately educated…I would in a second. It’s ok for politicians to not be on the bread line…doesn’t make them twats.

It says no posh twats like JRM. "No posh twats" is the offensive phrase.

Not JRM is a twat.

Iffx · 06/07/2024 21:11

And how can you be so shockingly naive as to assume: state school educated = salt of the earth. You do realise that the inequality in the state sector is absolutely gigantic? Million pound houses in the playgrounds of leafy schools vs neglected schools? Rich parents buying their way into catchments, massive parental help and input for those schools and the children in them - including tutoring for entry to selective state schools.

You're not even going to judge these people on the quality of their work. You're assuming they're wonderful as they were state educated.

IrritatedB3dM4ker · 06/07/2024 21:14

And not because he went to private school. He has been an arrogant and divisive presence in the last administration and deeply entitled unpleasant person imo.
