HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 04/07/2024 23:27

I have not voted
Reform and live in a safe tory seat But I voted
Lib dem tactical vote

I said ages Ago on here the reform would do really well and was shouted down.

Same as brexit, no one will admit voting for reform but
They still do it in droves it seems.

I'm Willing to bet they
Might win an election in four years at this rate!!

People should learn to read before commenting

Or are you saying

People who do not vote Reform have no right to an opinion.

I have posted an apology! The presentation and punctuation made it difficult to read.
The other PP who pointed it out managed to do so without the sarkyness

Sondheimisademigod · 05/07/2024 07:29

Theunamedcat · 05/07/2024 06:29

They said I have not voted reform

Yes! Have apologised!

Addressed how ?

Well big question, but there are clearly concerns in working class districts that are just being ignored.

Maybe a good start would be to say clearly "No we can't reduce immigration and this is why..." But then constructively produce policy that addresses the housing crisis, mitigates cost of living, regenerates post industrial districts and seaside towns...

Because I'm not sure that really been done in a clear and joined up way. Fudging and fibbing don't help.

And maybe Labour need to re-prioritise serving the needs of WC communities generally as a matter of urgency?

This whole approach of ignoring the elephant in the room or making empty promises isn't working.

There was a good book dissecting Brexit by a young academic with York/Rowntree connections. I started it but I don't think I finished it. It's probably lost somewhere in the shuffle. But I liked her approach.

At least there is one intelligent person on this thread.

The UK has just voted to get rid of a much discredited right wing government who are friends with many of the far right parties in the countries you mention.

I would suggest that the UK is ahead of the curve not behind.

On the contrary. The UK vote just shifted right. Just in doing so they split the right wing vote which doesn’t work in FPTP

OneForTheToad · 05/07/2024 07:36

Neurodiversitydoctor · 05/07/2024 07:02

Addressed how ?

Historically by taxing working productive people.

Maybe this time Labour will have the balls to increase taxes on unearned wealth, such as more punitive inheritance tax, a proper wealth tax, and a redesign of council tax. Maybe a proper Land Value Tax, where someone in a £ million house pays a lot more than someone in a £80k flat.

Grantshappsotherusrnames · 05/07/2024 07:27

I love that some very rich people some with dubious morals (looking at you Hester) who have paid for some very poor politicians to deliberately make a mess of the country have been sent packing.

But most tax payers, even 40% band, are 'very rich' (not very rich) by working hard ...... inherited wealth is taxed too....

Sloejelly · 05/07/2024 07:35

The TV in front of me says that Labour have 410 seats out of 650.
Labour are a centre left party.
Previously the largest party was a right to far right party.

How is that a shift to the right?

Yalta · 05/07/2024 07:40

swimsong · 05/07/2024 07:15

The anger and frustration is quite obviously with the party that has been in power for 14 years. This both-sides-the-same schtick is utter nonsense.

But if the problem was with the party in power then why didn’t these people turn to Labour

Labour need to worry that ultimately they didn’t win this landslide victory because huge numbers of ex Tory voters turned to them but because the disenfranchised Conservatives turned to Reform and split Tory vote

Interesting to know how many seats would Conservatives have won if the Reform votes were added to the Conservative vote.

Sloejelly · 05/07/2024 07:43

Horsedatives · 05/07/2024 07:21

I'd love a map of how people voted vs economic contribution and amount of tax paid!!

The areas with Reform MPs are all pretty deprived and represent areas with the lowest achieving group in the UK - white working class men.

OneForTheToad · 05/07/2024 07:44

Grantshappsotherusrnames · 05/07/2024 06:47

There are about 17000 illegal migrants to the UK each year, so that is not really a significant problem.

Farage was very clear as is the Reform Ltd Contract that they would continue migration for those who fulfil essential roles, which means roughly at current levels.

Reform Have clearly said in their manifesto that essential workers are ‘mainly healthcare workers’.
If you think we are importing 750,000 health care workers you are out of touch with reality.
The 10’s of thousands of Indian IT workers coming in are suppressing salaries in IT. Exactly the same as the massive influx of builders from EE did. Exactly the same as the massive influx of lorry drivers did.

What was someone saying about people and reading?

Reform did far better than most were expecting. I certainly didn’t think they would get any seats. Labour need to think very carefully if they are planning massive tax rises for working families who are already struggling with the cost of living and a raid on people’s pensions and savings then people will end up feeling disaffected and they they could be in for a shock at the next election. Look at what’s happening in France at the moment.

Reform got fewer seats than they hoped and many expected and didn't get any more than the greens

And what is going to be done for White working class men to make them choose Labour or Conservative in the next election

Probably nothing because being white and a man is seen as a privilege
and yet these people don’t feel privileged.

Devonbabs · 05/07/2024 07:47

Reform are a lot less scary than the bunch of misogynists who have very few policies we now have in power! Our woman hating new local MP will be making life hard for women and girls in the eork place, in sports and socially. He is keen to cut out freedom of speech. Give me Reform any day. I’m glad Farage won a seat, I’m sad there aren’t more Reform MPs.

The only saving grace is that after 5 years people will undoubtedly know how they screwed up this time. Hopefully Reform will be in a much stronger position to reverse the damage Labour will cause.

Off to the bookies to bet on Starmer being gone within a year.

No, they won’t think carefully at all. In fact they won’t think, they’ll just do it.

And the bulk of you suckers have no clue, and deserve it.

DodoTired · 05/07/2024 07:48

It’s actually better that Reform voters stop masquerading as conservatives and just show who they are. Better for everyone in politics to see what’s actually going on.

LiterallyOnFire · 05/07/2024 06:50

Wanting stricter immigration control does not mean you are a racist.

So it's single issue for you? Reform because immigration?

Who said I support Reform?

Yep, all I’ve heard is “We need a change”.

it’s like living in a house where the roof needs replacing. Rather than save for a new roof, we’ve burned down the house and are now living in a soon to be reposted car thinking, well at least the roof doesn’t need fixing!

But he's going to be gone in a year? OK @Devonbabs 😂

I might have muddled you up with someone else @OneForTheToad - sorry if so.

I don't even trust myself to go back and try to unravel it. I'm so tired. I should just accept I'm too old for this all-nighter stuff.

OneForTheToad · 05/07/2024 07:52

Sloejelly · 05/07/2024 07:46

Because the right vote split and we have a FPTP system.

Unless people wake up and vote in any party that will implement Proportional Representation then the UK will forever have two cheeks of the same arse in charge.

Starseeking · 05/07/2024 07:53

Labour have only got 1.7% more of the vote than they did at the last election; while they have won on FPTP, this is not a huge success story for them.

Tory vote collapsed and split between Reform and smaller parties.

At 4m votes for Reform so far, Reform have leapfrogged Lib Dems and are now the third party of the UK. Despite them only having taken 4 seats so far, it's a stunning victory for them.

Reform are getting a shitload of voters
Reform are getting a shitload of voters
Reform are getting a shitload of voters
AhBiscuits · 05/07/2024 07:54

I think a lot of the Reform votes are disgruntled Tories making a protest vote.
In general young people aren't voting for Reform. In 4 years we'll have another 4 years of young people of voting age.

Yeah because from previous generations they are used to just be handed whats they perceive is their due, job security, family, automatic respect - turns out one has to work for an opportunity to get these. Just like women and not white men have to.
