HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 04/07/2024 23:27

I have not voted
Reform and live in a safe tory seat But I voted
Lib dem tactical vote

I said ages Ago on here the reform would do really well and was shouted down.

Same as brexit, no one will admit voting for reform but
They still do it in droves it seems.

I'm Willing to bet they
Might win an election in four years at this rate!!

Scary

Demonstrating how excellent the Labour campaign under Pat McFadden was.

Did he push Reform?

sleepyscientist · 05/07/2024 07:00

Immigration is such a minor issue and one we should be supporting for people escaping war torn counties.

Reform should not be on the ballot paper nor should any party with even a hint of racist ideology

Floppybeachhat · 05/07/2024 06:57

All this alarmist language around people voting for a party because the other two options have royalty fucked up the country 🙄

You don't think NF had a big hand in fucking up the country?
Voting Reform seems like throwing good money after bad.

The problem is that ultimately there are many more poorer people in the country than well off.
And neither of the big parties represent them

Please God this will have to be properly addressed now. It should have happened 8 or 9 years ago.

Addressed how ?

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 05/07/2024 07:02

It scares me the amount of votes Reform has got. So many Reform votes that ordinarily would have gone to the Tories. God help us if this is any indication of what’s to come.

Sloejelly · 05/07/2024 07:02

It is ironic that the result of Reform standing is there is now a government with a larger majority whose policies are furthest from Reforms.

TheMoth · 05/07/2024 07:08

I teach quite a few children of immigrants; immigrants themselves and refugees. When other kids declare loudly, it's always loudly, that they would vote reform, we know exactly what they mean.

I’ve said this many times. Reform will start to come out of the shadows, and whilst nowhere near winning anything too significant at this stage, I predict they will be standing shoulder to shoulder with the other two parties in years to come, and increasing their popularity as they go. There’s a gap which exists where a lot of people are not represented by either Labour or Tory, who both need to step up and fill that gap if they are unhappy about Reform’s increasing popularity.

But it didn’t because people were too busy protesting and wanting to overturn the result and calling people who voted leave racists and unintelligent. Almost like the posters calling Reform voters racists and bottom feeders.

No one has asked why these people feel the way they do and no one wants to find a solution to attract them to vote for the major parties

Its again just thinking these people aren’t intellectually bright enough and dismissing their concerns

Except the numbers are growing with each election as more and more people feel that the major parties don’t represent them

The last Labour government did pretty well. General quality of life was a lot better. Dread to think how the over-ideological, financially incompetent & grossly corrupt current Tories would've handled the 2008 global financial crisis. Gordon Brown was, and is still, admired by economists throughout the world.

Rewis · 05/07/2024 07:11

It is following the trend in Europe. Makes total sense. Voters are disappointed with conservatives and they need to vote for someone else.

LiterallyOnFire · 05/07/2024 07:14

Well big question, but there are clearly concerns in working class districts that are just being ignored.

Maybe a good start would be to say clearly "No we can't reduce immigration and this is why..." But then constructively produce policy that addresses the housing crisis, mitigates cost of living, regenerates post industrial districts and seaside towns...

Because I'm not sure that really been done in a clear and joined up way. Fudging and fibbing don't help.

And maybe Labour need to re-prioritise serving the needs of WC communities generally as a matter of urgency?

This whole approach of ignoring the elephant in the room or making empty promises isn't working.

There was a good book dissecting Brexit by a young academic with York/Rowntree connections. I started it but I don't think I finished it. It's probably lost somewhere in the shuffle. But I liked her approach.

The anger and frustration is quite obviously with the party that has been in power for 14 years. This both-sides-the-same schtick is utter nonsense.

Then you’re in the wrong profession. You shouldn’t assume anything. Surely being a teacher is about taking onboard what children think, why they think what they do, and not allow your own opinions to cloud judgement on why they feel like they do. If a teacher, you’re in an ideal position to speak with your pupils on this subject, and give guidance, not close them down by just assuming.

Yeah that's what I mean. And where did that get anyone?

There's an urban, MC tendency to just assume that the Reform/UKIP/Brexit voters are thick/racist/hopeless/vile, but that's the opposite of constructive, and it's just mutual incomprehension.

Immigration is a huge and growing issue. The majority are escaping from poverty not war. More people die from poverty than war. But there are 700 million people worldwide living in extreme poverty and we cannot sustain them all. With climate change migration pressures are going to increase. It is incredibly naive to simply say ‘we should be supporting people from war torn countries’

Look at the European Parliament elections. Look at France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy.

The UK is slightly behind the curve, that's all.

That's a warning, by the way, nothing else.

The UK has just voted to get rid of a much discredited right wing government who are friends with many of the far right parties in the countries you mention.

I would suggest that the UK is ahead of the curve not behind.

Chersfrozenface · 05/07/2024 07:21

The last Labour government did pretty well. General quality of life was a lot better.

When there was money available to the government because the economy was doing well (on shaky ground, as it turned out).

You will also note that Labour lost the 2010 election, so it looks as if the electorate were less than impressed with the way they were dealing with the aftermath of the 2008 crash.

This thread is showing exactly why people have voted Reform - there's a nasty implication of stupid, working class, northern idiots. Don't worry, the sensible southerners will show them how they should have voted.

I'd love a map of how people voted vs economic contribution and amount of tax paid!!

Sondheimisademigod · 05/07/2024 07:22

It’s badly punctuated, but the OP did vote Lib Dem.

Ah! Thanks you
Apologies OP!

Iseeyoupekingduck · 05/07/2024 07:24

What people don't understand is voting for reform is just voting for Farrages ego he's not interested in the country he's just a a racist Tory.

LiterallyOnFire · 05/07/2024 07:25

I'd love a map of how people voted vs economic contribution and amount of tax paid!!

Why? Because a citizen's value is wholly determined by the amount of in tax they pay?

There are an awful lot of minimum wage workers propping us all up by cleaning hospitals, emptying bins and wiping bottoms for a pittance. Not to mention admin and retail.

Maybe Labour need to rediscover the WCs?

I'd not object to a bold move like a huge New Deal type scheme.

I love that some very rich people some with dubious morals (looking at you Hester) who have paid for some very poor politicians to deliberately make a mess of the country have been sent packing.

So they get a lot of vote?

Why are you surprised ?

People are well pissed off , with gixking good reason , and they offer (at first glance ) hope for a better future

How this plays out long term depends on how things can be turned around for the general public not the super rich and not the London crew

All true, but why not London Crew
