HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 04/07/2024 23:27

I have not voted
Reform and live in a safe tory seat But I voted
Lib dem tactical vote

I said ages Ago on here the reform would do really well and was shouted down.

Same as brexit, no one will admit voting for reform but
They still do it in droves it seems.

I'm Willing to bet they
Might win an election in four years at this rate!!

Scary
Times

Thanks, it’s good to see many others on this thread agree.

Leaving this thread now I think I’ve had my say 😂 and can’t be arsed tonight with the reform apologists irrespective of their alleged race or nationality.

I’ll check the final results in the morning. Here’s hoping they got less than predicted but I doubt it tbh.

Sorry but I have to call you out on this especially as your are calling others racisit. Someone whose parents were immigrants are almost certainly British although they may have dual nationality but they are as British as anyone else. I think you mean to refer to their heitage, possibly their culture or even their ethnicity.

All of which I know.

Go and patronise somebody else, please.

You know you made an odd leap, but I’m patronising you for pointing it out and clarifying what I mean? Cool

Me pointing out that a word has racist connotations, and you jumping to the conclusion that it means I haven’t been somewhere is an odd leap which makes me think you have poor reading comprehension. You then asserting that “white ghettos are a thing”, needing to qualify that some ghettos are white, further reinforces my point that the word is associated with minorities.

It's not a racist word, it describes an certain kind of area where a certain group, often marginalized in some way, is kept together. Sometimes by cultural forces, sometimes economically, sometimes legally. It can be race, or class. You might think of black communities, others might think first of Jewish communities, another person might think of a ghetto that is mainly white, or Asian in some places.

They all have negative connotations because their whole existence is about marginalizing people. It's not because some of them are composed mainly of black people.

cantgetmybreath · 05/07/2024 01:17

@ExitPursuedByABare 🤔 not sure really I mean a lot of the older ones who voted for brexit have retired to Spain now. Unfortunately they still get a vote !

There are no other true 'right wing' parties. Conservatives have headed too far to the left which means for those that have different views on the keeping the NHS, taxation policy and the funding of public services have no real alternative to select. Hopefully after this the Conservatives will realise that they need to realign with their traditional voters and stop trying to be everything to everyone.

I'm not sure I follow you. How is the Tory party left wing exactly? Because they haven't flogged off the NHS yet I suppose. This makes them raving Marxists ...

Thanks. I didn’t know the emoji for tosspots.

And there is the problem
It's not the far right, fascists etć.

Its bright voters knowing Labour will win but wanting to send a message.

ExitPursuedByABare · 05/07/2024 01:21

@cantgetmybreath I thought Brexit prevented them retiring Spain.

Close to being 3rd. Certainly not close to Labour vote.

I agree completely, which is why I said it has racist connotations. Historically, ghetto referred to black communities in the US. But yeah, could be any minority. My point was that they were wondering if it is racist to object to the existence of ghettos in their area, and I pointed out that the word itself has racist connotations.

cantgetmybreath · 05/07/2024 01:22

@ExitPursuedByABare if they got in before the end of 2020 they are fine which gave them a good four years to sort it out

Abhannmor · 05/07/2024 01:22

Is getting 13,000 fewer votes that the victor close now?
Or do you mean that Reform were close to the Tories in 3rd place, which they were.

Another seat where Reform Ltd + Reform Lite Con is less than Labour.

WhereIsTheHare · 05/07/2024 01:24

It’s interesting that adding together the Ref and Con votes in all these constituencies so far still doesn’t add up to the total that Lab are getting to win, so neither Con nor Ref can claim that splitting the right wing vote has kept them from winning seats.

yes but these are very safe Labour seats. The point is in those areas Reform is the opposition.

Seats that Labour hasn't campaigned strongly in and yet their share of the vote in Cramlington went up by 5%.

What the Labour strategists appear to have got very right is mobilising the vote where they need it most, the swings are likely to be larger where they need it to be to secure seats that previously did not hold, whereas seats that they do hold they may lose a little bit of that previous majority.

Historically, ghetto refers to Jewish communities in Europe. The term originates from the 1500s. And they were legally enforced, not enforced by societal code.

Also worth noting that Cramlington is a new seat, but a Tory MP was standing in the seat, as it used to be part of his constituency.

That’s interesting, the connection to Jewish communities goes back further than I thought. I had most often heard it in the context of black civil rights, but the roots do seem European. Either way, not a word I’d happily use about any areas now, because I think it is stigmatising and implies negative things about minorities.

People from ethnic origins voting Reform.

Abhannmor · 05/07/2024 01:41

Ghetto is an old Italian word I think. Definitely always Jewish areas in the late middle ages.
