If there was a GE today who would you vote for?

Bit cheeky but I’m curious to see if there are genuinely any Tory voters out there at all following another disastrous week for Rishi Sunak.

So who would get your vote?

I‘ll go first, I would vote Labour. As much as I would love to hear more on policy and a firm grittiness from them, I do understand that Keir Starmer is doing the best he can, in that he can’t alienate a large proportion of the electorate so needs to toe the line.

The question was asked and it was answered, a lot of people feel very strongly about that single issue. If you want another reason to vote Tory, I think pushing back the dates for no more new petrol cars and combo boilers was excellent. Whilst retaining the net zero goals. we definitely need a better infrastructure before the country can support electric car charging. M y Tory council is offering subsidies for solar panels which is a good thing as well.

@AnonAnonandAriston you have been measured and reasonable on this thread. But there is only one view that usually gets shut down on mn and that anyone who opposes the vociferous pack on the feminism boards (which I have had to hide because of the one track single issue thinking on there). It really is doing mn a disservice and giving us all a bad name. I’m fed up of it. And this Thread is a case in point. No chance of any debate on any other subject before the deafening chorus of “only party who knows that a woman is” comes to, ironically, shut down a bunch a women discussing politics.

I agree, it's a shame that there can't be reasonable debate about these types of issues. People disagree, of course they do, but a difference of opinion does not make one person 'good' and another 'bad', we all come at things with a different lived experience which shapes our viewpoint

I'll come off mn around the general election because it disgusts me how vitriolic people get with people that don't share the same views - of course all Conservative voters will be dubbed thick racist gammons, and all Labour voters will be dubbed whiny lefty snowflakes. It's all a bit pathetic really, sigh

Greengrassohla · 23/09/2023 23:42

A couple of people have asked why I said conservative and it’s this: *A vote for labour, Lib Dem or green completely ends any safety or dignity for women. At least now we can still debate it and win in the courts. Vote left wing and we are stuffed.

It’s an existential matter. If men can be women we have no recourse or protection in law or in society. Life then becomes very dangerous for girls and women and once that becomes enshrined in law it’s the devils own job to reverse it. I can’t believe any woman would vote for a party that is going to reduce her to a crude stereotype without protection from male privilege and all that entails*

People vote for what is important to them, not the future of the country

I will absolutely be voting for the future of this country and what kind of culture I want my children growing up in. Labour will not personally benefit me financially etc but I believe they will create a fairer society which has to be better for the majority of people.

I feel like I'm someone who should typically be a labour voter but there's just no way I can find them electable, they just feel to be full of idealistic waffle. There are just too many ways I feel that they would let me and my family down. I can't say that the Tories are great either but as lib dem would be a waste of avote where I live they are the only option......

87SPD · 23/09/2023 23:56

Well this is a depressing thread, what a selfish, incompetent and insular nation we have become!

I am shocked how many are openly admitting to voting Tory and even more shocked at the reasons, the most irritating being the ‘real woman’ issue. This government degrade women on a daily basis, reside over sexist institutions and hold draconian beliefs but yeah sure Labour are the real threat to women!

If the tories are elected at the next GE I will lose what little faith I have left in the British electorate and genuinely fear for the future of my children. Gobsmacked!!

Although I do think the left leaning parties aren't paying nearly enough attention to the strength of feeling on this particular matter and it may come as a surprise.

I know people dismiss it as just on mn and 'not reflective of real life', but that is because a lot of women are far too scared to raise their head above the parapet in real life.

The threat of being reported because you dare to believe in biological sex and get a knock on the door from the police or get pulled into a disciplinary at work for 'hate speech' is a sad and scary reality.

My brain is engaged thanks

The VAT on school fees would be problematic for me. Along with many Labour policies.

Im not stupid, selfish or all the other names us non-lefties are being called. I'm just allowed an opinion and a vote.

as possible debating points, : people wonder why after all the struggles to get the vote for all, this is what happens, people seem to forget the country as a whole or they vote on a whim then wonder how x party got into power etc

If either the Tories or Labour win the next election then I will fear for the future of my children.

Economically we are screwed so it doesn't matter who forms the next Government.

MadderthanMorris · 24/09/2023 00:14

I would sodomise myself with a carving knife before voting Tory.

Traditionally Labour, but I can't vote for Starmer's absolute wolf-in-sheep's-clothing right wing takeover of the brand, combined with his love of corrupt authoritarianism and refusal to address the glaring unfairness and absurdity of our electoral system. And I honestly can't see how his "Labour" government is going to help, as it seems intent on following the same program as the Tories anyway, and will be answerable only to a toxic combination of Big Money interests and social conservatives who got us into this shitfest in the first place.

I might vote Green or Lib Dem as a show of support in principle (they won't get anywhere in my constituency) for parties willing to support PR. Best we can hope for is a minority Labour government requiring such parties' support to govern.

Whynotthen · 24/09/2023 00:16

🙄 I'm voting Labour. You might not, let's discuss why I'm right 🙄🙄🙄

Kendodd · 24/09/2023 00:25

Tactical.
Anyone except Tory (obviously apart from all the racist parties like Ukip or whatever they're called now)

Gillstuck · 24/09/2023 00:28

Labour. To rebalance and bring the country back to more central ground, politically. Because the current Tories are not conservatives. They have moved far too far to the right. They have messed up badly and are too easily persuaded by vested interests which are not in the public interest. Our country is poorer and more divided after 13 years of their being in power. Because they gave us Liz Truss as PM.

87SPD · 24/09/2023 00:28

Whynotthen · 24/09/2023 00:16

🙄 I'm voting Labour. You might not, let's discuss why I'm right 🙄🙄🙄

But I genuinely don’t see how voting Tory could possibly be right? I get that Labour aren’t perfect, far from it but from the limited options we have due to the outdated and flawed voting system I don’t see a any other viable option, so not discussing why I am right more like discussing why people would possibly vote for another shambles

Exactly!

And if you dare to have a different opinion to the OP you are selfish, incompetent and insular apparently.

caringcarer · 24/09/2023 00:38

I think the country has a very poor choice. I can't vote labour because they don't know the difference between men and women and neither do Lib Dems so I won't vote for them either. I really dislike Sunak he's a snake. I probably won't vote it's just so depressing.

Not at all, different opinions are fine and needed this isn’t a pro-labour only thread I was just shocked how many people said Tory! I genuinely can’t understand it, I get why people won’t vote for labour but I don’t get why anyone would vote Tory after what they have done 🤷‍♀️

Frankly the second they voted in Liz Truss they became unvotable. What an utterly absurd decision that was (and I say that as someone who would generally consider themselves more aligned with conservative politics)

Mountaineer0009 · 24/09/2023 00:51

has anyone studied Liz Truss policies in detail or have you based your perspectives on eg newspaper headlines ?

Mountaineer0009 · 24/09/2023 00:52

maybe the security services should form a political party to be running the country ?

crew2022 · 24/09/2023 00:54

BitOutOfPractice · 23/09/2023 21:43

@crew2022 you don’t need to worry about Sadiq Khan. He’s not standing in any GE. 🙄

Thanks. I realise that.
But if his actions represent Labour, no I can't vote for them.
He's a coward and has penalised poorer people with Ulez.
Keir Starmer is not prime minister material imo.

CallieQ · 24/09/2023 00:57

Labour
Green
Anyone but Rishi
