Yes, she's fucked up and, yes, we are all paying the repercussions and, yes, she's due exactly the same kind of crash the economy's been through.

But I bet she's going to make the absolute most of her one last chance at country house living...

Leave it out - apart from the lettuce (!) this was all out there anyway. Maybe she should have thought about the effect on her children - you know, as their mother.

I can only assume that her sense of entitlement and misguided belief that she was capable was more of a priority…

I would image that Liz Truss will be feeling absolutely crushed. Her whole life has been about gaining power, switching her principles as required, and she’s now been shown up in the most publicly humiliating way possible. By many accounts, she’s a total oddball and has few if any friends. Her parents may still love her but they loathe her politics. She cheated on her husband. So I’d not think she’ll be whooping anything up. Theresa Coffey, on the other hand, is probably halfway through Chequers’ wine cellar by now.

I just wonder how much of this online stuff is true.

People keep talking about Truss and Kwarteng, and there are also rumours about Kwarteng and Amber Rudd.

I presume the issue isn't so much whether those rumours are true, it's the fact that they exist. If anything it might be worse for the subject if they're bullshit.

Im not a Conservative voter.
She has 2 teenage children, I feel sorry for them.
She did put herself forward for PM.
But I think the Conservative party itself are hugely hypocritical since they actually voted to put her there and now she's the one that takes all the blame.

The dialogue about Truss has focused on none of this but correctly, her utterly inept performance as PM.

Her kids will be fine.

She has kids & a husband: In her shoes, I imagine all my planning would be about smooth transition & making sure my kids had minimal disruption in their lives. No time to wallow in self-pity.

She blamed KK though for carrying out her policy! It’s what they do! If you enter politics you need the skin of a rhinoceros and no emotion at all. Women are particularly badly treated but of course if you cannot stand the heat, there’s not much anyone can do. Except what most women do - earn decent money, have a great career and forget the power! The way social media and colleagues work against you, who in their right mind would be a politician? That’s the clue of course - no one normal would!

Yes, one does wonder if that kind of “incompetence” is even possible.

Story in the Mail today (yes I know I know, and maybe it's just Kwasi taking revenge) maintains that Truss actually came up with the tax cuts/borrowing plan in a secret meeting with her advisers on 13 Sept, and Kwarteng was strongarmed into the measures, ie that he had to take the flak, was a fall guy for her crazy schemes. If that is indeed the case, then she is shameful and completely driven by self-interest, with no sense of loyalty. But then, with her marital history and if those ongoing rumours about her private life are true, should we be surprised?!

Well quite. Her affair is well documented. However I have never heard about any of the other stories related to the sexual practices change describes.* * They certainly haven’t been mentioned in the mainstream press. So it seems unlikely pupils at her daughters school will know about this unless they have insider access to the rumour mill at Westminster or wherever these stories come from. The necklace thing sounds utterly bizarre!

To be honest, I do feel very sorry for her daughters but only because Truss comes across as such a peculiar individual that I think having her as a mother must be quite challenging.

They are economical with the truth! She has been interested in the smaller state and tax cuts for a while and had a pet economist telling her what to do for some time. Certainly way before September. She dislikes the world order of finance and wanted to be the disrupter by flexing our Brexit muscles and going against conventional wisdom. Puny muscles they’ve turned out to be!!

She wooed Con members on the smaller state and tax cuts for her growth agenda. They didn’t factor in the consequences. Sunak did. But the pocket and ideology talk for retired members. They didn’t care about borrowing, pensions and mortgages. Most economists warned against it as it involved expensive borrowing. We were already not in a great position to borrow more. It was a huge gamble. KK saw the warnings but he wanted promotion. Neither were astute enough to see the folly of their budget. That was widely said to be hers and KK went along with it. Bigger fool him.

I can't quite believe, @TizerorFizz, that we have the two most senior figures in British politics squirming like a couple of miscreants in front of the headmaster, both trying to shift the blame to the other. It's embarrassing to watch, and God knows what other countries make of it all. Have either of them uttered the word 'sorry'?

You can easily Google it, I certainly didn’t need to make it up. I first heard those rumours elsewhere on MN, as it happens. And I only mentioned it after somebody asked why her daughters might be being teased.

I also said the fact LT has whole articles devoted to how “weird” she is (Guardian, yesterday), how nobody likes her, and how stupid she is, can’t be much fun for her children either.

Downhill from Oxford then! She was promoted above her ability by telling members what they wanted to hear. MPs didn’t want her and probably knew a car crash was likely. Not being astute enough to realise that you cannot do exactly what you want quickly is foolhardy. She didn’t want the OBR to exist, so she bypassed them. She didn’t want scrutiny, so she bypassed that too. Just supremely arrogant.

Of course there’s a squabble for leadership. Most parties don’t do if elegantly!
