Apparently, this is highly likely to happen according to someone I know. He’s been right about a lot of things. I hope he isn’t right about this.

Just because it's in the press and the Tories are talking about it, doesn't mean to say it will come to pass.

This is one of those stories which I feel is testing the water to see the reaction. If they then decide to start talking about it more openly and then decide to press on, it will get interesting.

Remember the history on this. The UK was a leader in bringing in workers rights to paid holiday. You can go back to pre-Victorian era for this. It was pushed through by workers. Manchester in particular has significant history in this department.

I simply don't buy that it will just happen. Like the 'dementia tax', it's a turkey.

Six pages on a thread of fake news.

and I’m sure it’s the covid conspiracy loonies that are the ones writing on here.

removing paid holiday is not happening ffs.

When I started work (1979, I an old), you got two pay rises a year. One to match inflation and your actual pay rise. Christmas shopping days, days off to move house, get married (might have been a week). All gone now.
At some point some bright spark introduced 'performance related pay' which basically meant they didn't have to give you a pay rise at all if they didn't want to.
How did we let them get away with all this stuff? Why are we all so supine?

If it did happen, presumably the House of Lords could vote it down like they did tax credit cuts?

My Milkman said one of his customers told him that her hair dresser had heard that the Torys are going to recind the law on children going up chimneys.

That would be great news if true because it will bring the price down and reduce overcrowding in schools.

I know who I'll be voting for next time.

Thats great
Chimney sweeps are expensive and a dying breed and with fuel costs I will be re-opening my 14 fireplaces.
Getting children into an early apprenticeship is the future.

Fake news spreads. Read some fake news that the PM and Rees Mogg said lazy workers need to work harder to enrich their overlords. Economists mostly agree the UK is a relatively low skill, low wage economy that relies on long hours to compensate and, even then is an outlier amongst comparable economies with low growth in GDP. The PM and Rees Mogg surely understand enough economics for the statements attributed to them to be fake news?

Ylvamoon · 22/09/2022 16:08

🤔
Meanwhile in the real world:

  • petrol / diesel prices kreeping up to record high
  • energy price cap scrapped for households
  • 66 gazillions pledged to help energy firms to stay afloat
  • NHS needs more financial managers not nurses
  • personal allowance dropped to 6.5k

Jacob R-M saying that paid leave isn’t a right. This is also the man who recently said that it’s good we left the EU so that this government can do what they like with worker laws.

We’re all going back to 1830 no workers right 50 hour weeks workhouse or camps for unemployed or disabled (torries would love this if they could get away with it)

dollybird · 22/09/2022 19:13

Someone upthread said that the age at which you get paid minimum wage has gone up. This isn't true, it's come down from 25 to 23.

Anon778833 · 22/09/2022 21:43

Well the government has just published its ‘Brexit freedoms bill’ today.

@dollybird That was me, because it used to be 22. The Tories put it up to 25 then lowered it to 23, are we supposed to be grateful? This is how they get away with it! People have short memories.

"The 1998 National Minimum Wage Act provided for the establishment of a Low Pay Commission that now sets Britain’s first ever National Minimum Wage (NMW). The first rate, set in April 1999, was £3.60 an hour for adults aged over 22..." www.qmul.ac.uk/geog/livingwage/history/

orbitalcrisis · 23/09/2022 10:05

The minimum wage comment has got me thinking; in 20 years time will there be people saying how wonderful the Tories are for upping our holiday allowance to a whole week?

Yes and don’t forget the mines too get them underground and working, they’ll love this.
