Apparently, this is highly likely to happen according to someone I know. He’s been right about a lot of things. I hope he isn’t right about this.

People rarely protest here. Plus the government have made it illegal. It was always obvious that they would remove employment rights and benefits.

This ^
Giving the Tories free rein was the main reason I was against Brexit. It is obvious we will lose out.

Why do people keep voting for this shitshow.

Why do people keep voting for this shitshow.

Because they have their head in the sand like @Boreded

The Brexiteers I know (which luckily isn’t many) were saying nothing bad would happen as a result of leaving the EU and it was all scaremongering. Now that bad things ARE happening as a direct result, they have shifted their position to ‘Oh well, the Illuminati runs the world so my vote didn’t do anything’.

The reasoning seems to be that in America, nobody gets paid leave. So we have no right to expect it here, either. That will be why, in the US people only have 2 weeks holiday a year then.

Unfortunately, things have become worse and worse and people have also shown that they are happy to keep voting for a government who doesn’t benefit them by being in power.

I'd LOVE to know your source for things that "happen" in America???
Nobody gets paid leave? Most people get paid vacations. Usually starts at 2 weeks a year but the longer you work some where the more you earn. People also get paid holidays (like your bank holidays). I remember as a kid my father had 8 weeks paid vacation a year.

What did your father do for a living?

Better in the sand than up my arse :)

im educated enough to know that they won’t reduce workers rights in this way…I am also not a brexiteer because I have a brain and I’m under 65, and I’ve only ever voted labour.

your post is still sensationalist nonsense

If you’re ‘educated enough to know’, what does that actually mean? And how is my thread ‘sensationalist’? I haven’t just made this up.

If you have evidence that this won’t happen then post it.

The amount of people bitching and moaning about not being able to have holidays during covid, and how they're essential etc etc....... Be political suicidal to do this - as I suspect most of those people were their voters.......

NC.

I don’t want to be outing but let’s just say I work pretty closely with government on policy issues. I can categorically say this is not going to happen. I mean, Truss is as mad as a hatter but she is not that bonkers.

You realise that she wants to win the next GE? Can you think of a single policy that would be more unpopular than this? 😆

Scaremongering for the sake of scaremongering.

Devilishpyjamas · 22/09/2022 06:41

I see they are set to reduce universal credit for people working up to 15 hours a week now. While increasing banker’s bonuses. Have no doubt who controls Liz Truss. Welcome to a U.K. run by Jacob Rees Mogg and the ERG.

FreddyHG · 22/09/2022 06:50

This would finish a government that has at most 2 years left on its lifespan. Starmer unfortunately is a shoe in for the next election and I still don't forgive him for his post Brexit referendum reaction. Conservative party chose the wrong horse to back.

Exactly. He’s the one behind the ‘paid holidays are not a right’ rhetoric. He’s an awful man who would bring back workhouses.

Those saying this is scaremongering, let’s hope that you are right and this idea doesn’t have time to come to fruition.

As others have said, nobody will notice until it’s too late if it all happens gradually.

"someone I know" says unicorns are real.

Unless we know something about this "someone" and whether their opinions are worth listening to, then this just comes across as astroturfing

There's enough real issue to be dealing with, without inventing new ones

somewhereovertherain · 22/09/2022 08:04

They are slowly unpicking lots of rights that we had. And will continue to do so. Nothing would surprise me with these awful clowns. But still think that’s a step too far.

hopefully truss will be destroyed at the next election.

stargirl1701 · 22/09/2022 08:08

I can't see teachers accepting this. We've already voted to strike in EIS union over the 5% pay rise offer. That's the vast majority of primary teachers. I'm not sure of the SSTA/EIS breakdown at secondary.

He doesn’t work for the government but is close to various sources. If you don’t believe it, that’s fine. But if you even Google you, will find it linked to Liz Truss as PM. There have been rumblings about it from the conservatives since at least 2016.

It’s shit working in alot of jobs right now. I’ve been in the NHS a long time. I’m hanging in ( it’s imploding and is shit) but if they cut my needed holiday time I’d be off. I’ve worked years to build that up!

Honestly generally overall I think even more would strike/protest. The Tories seem to know the are losing power and are trying to make their ‘friends’ rich and destroy the economy even further before they do.

I hope so! I don’t think that she will get a majority. For a start, she’s a woman. Not that misogyny is a good thing but in this case…

www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/bonfire-of-workers-rights-policy-likely-to-be-led-by-jacob-rees-mogg-334168/

Jacob Rees Mogg is on record saying that paid holidays for workers aren't a moral right.

So yes, kiss goodbye to the working time directive and hello to 48+ hour weeks.

That’s because he has no morals and would probably return back to Victorian Britain with kids up his chimney if he could. He really is an out of date , nasty man.

Shinyandnew1 · 22/09/2022 08:15

What happened to mass's protest?

The Conservatives passed laws to stop the public protesting. They also passed laws to make striking very difficult, too.

AntlerRose · 22/09/2022 08:15

It will be chipped away at so people dont notice it happening to avoid mass protest. Just certain categories of lower paid jobs.
Lots of employers will still offer better conditions than the minimum too.

They can make paid holiday pay optional. It will start with only a few jobs having poor holiday allowance, and then slowly spread over the years.

Just like sick pay. Very few, low paid jobs, have this now and people just accept it - they have no choice.
