As requested, I have contacted MNHQ via the contact provided in the deletion message

Welcome to The Westminster Arms!

🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷

A non-partisan politics pub thread for political chit chat....!!

Please stick within MN talk guidelines - any posts which you think may have crossed the line, please report rather than getting into scraps on thread 😠

Political punch-ups are soooo last decade - ain't nobody got time for that 🥊❌

Be nice! Be respectful!

S'ok to slag off politicians, but not other posters 🍻

Dinner's off Silvery. Lily can't be arsed decided it wasn't worthwhile. I blame Gary Lineker and his on-pitch debacle.

Limer · 23/01/2020 13:52

Just watched last night's Andrew Neil with Emily T. She comes over as an old-fashioned hectoring schoolmistress - no way will she win the leadership.

I'm genuinely worried about the new virus - will be doing plenty of hand washing, I read it's the best way to minimise contamination by viruses.

MrsSnippyPants · 23/01/2020 13:53

Yes monthly might be possible. Putin does it once a year but for 4 hours.

When you come back to a thread via the last post and realise you need to scroll back a bit Shock Grin

SingingLily · 23/01/2020 13:55

If I'd known Dom was going to be round later to install the new coffee machine, I'd have worn something a bit smarter than this old thing. Grin

There's no dress code specified for this do, Hospitality, but the venue is smart and so is the menu. Xing would be pleased; big emphasis on foods sourced from the West Country. I don't really like dressing up so I've got two good dresses - one summery, one wintery - and they are suitable for weddings, funerals, posh dos, the lot. Xing would be less impressed with that Smile but I call them my Princess Anne dresses because she recycles old favourites and doesn't care.

31 January is important to me for many reasons but a significant one is that it stops the argument once and for all and allows us to just move on. This country is facing many challenges and has some running sores that affect people's daily lives but they were crowded out on the political bandwidth because of Brexit. It also means we have to face up to serious questions about what kind of a country we want to be and how we intend to get there. It won't be all sunny uplands but it won't be Armageddon either. What it will be is a UK finding UK-centred solutions to UK-specific problems while developing its own position and relationship with the wider world. And it will all take time.

Hi Autumn, Saucery, Limer and Howabout - glad you found us!

Silvery, RLB's stance on TWAW is a fair point for a pub like this based on non-partisan political discussion but could I just point out that FWR topics like this have special MN Talk Guidelines and even seasoned contributors like LangCleg find navigating those guidelines tricky. I'd be tempted to look for a separate thread about that. I've no doubt there's one already running. Just trying to help Smile

Agree Saucery

Picture for AutumnRose:

This is shocking news hospitality I shall have to cook my own but since I'm the fussiest eater in the world, that's probably a good thing. I don't want to upset Lily by turning my nose up at her offerings. I haven't watched the Lineker debacle, figured once seen it would be impossible to unsee.

Point taken Lily I did think about that just after I pressed Post. We need an edit function on here, even if for 1 minute after posting. Your dinner on 31 sounds fab.

Lord above, Silvery, the number of times I've wished for a one-minute edit feature for my posts...Grin

I had never ever heard of this type of Cointreau! No way am I telling Mr Lily. He'd hunt it down for his collection of spirits and liqueurs. It already needs its own postcode.

Saucery · 23/01/2020 14:10

Are there any guidelines against saying RLB looks (and sounds) like the girl at secondary school whose self esteem was so low she had to be an absolute bully to everyone around her, particularly those who were more intelligent (and that was the majority).
Which is a niche and personal reason to dislike her, I know Grin

SingingLily · 23/01/2020 14:15

Well, Jo Swinson was known as Head Girl Jo on the Brexit Arms threads because of her bossy lecturing manner, Saucery, and no one got deleted for it...Grin

howabout · 23/01/2020 14:21

Realise I may be in a minority of one but I like RLB. Doesn't take herself too seriously and stands by her convictions even if I don't agree with lots of them. She also seems prepared to listen to other points of view but that may be more perception than reality. In contrast Lisa Nandy can be guilty of paying lipservice so eg supporting Brexit as long as it could be engineered such that it wasn't actually Brexit.

Now you've all contrasted Sir Keir with John Major I'm wondering who his backbench paramour is?

SilverySurfer · 23/01/2020 14:24

Not back bench but I think we can pretty much guarantee it's not Long-Bailey Grin

bellinisurge · 23/01/2020 14:30

Politicians are fair game. Crossing the line when we talk about each other is not on @Saucery . And MNHQ ultimately decides where the line is. This being their gaff.

SilverySurfer · 23/01/2020 14:41

Sounds about right to me Saucery

Coppersulphate · 23/01/2020 14:53

Snippy, I am still laughing at you taking my post out of context. You make it sound much more interesting.😂😂😂
Any bacon harms left?

Well Dom Raab has now fitted the shiny new coffee machine and put up some shelves for supplies.
Said he was sorry to have missed the LL but left his private number behind the bar in case she needs to contact him. 😉💪🏻☕️☕️

When will you be able to inspect it Hospitality?
So I can have a large latte with that bacon barm.

SingingLily · 23/01/2020 15:04

Just in...

*Royal Assent given.

That's it, folks. It's law.

☕️☕️☕️ and freshly cooked bacon butties all round.

MrsSnippyPants · 23/01/2020 15:13

Put out the bunting!

I might open something fizzy tonight!

sarcasm on sarcasm off Grin

hospitalityinspector · 23/01/2020 15:15

Silvery further information required about B O Cointreau. Is it just the bottle that's orange, like Bombay Sapphire's blue bottle, or is the liquid orange? (I realise I'm far too invested in this, but I like to know these things) Grin

The beautifully installed coffee machine is up, running and tested. It's working a treat. All types of fancy coffees available. The lovely, straight shelves house all the pods, essences and extra fripperies involved in posh coffees. Top shelf has miniature liqueurs, for which there is an honesty box. I've left a note for the missing LL to order some miniature blood orange Cointreau for our fussy patrons.

I've been wondering where our LL is. Last I saw she was taking DR down the cellar to look at her dodgy wiring. She hasn't returned yet. Wink

SilverySurfer · 23/01/2020 15:17

Excuse the swearing but I'm so fucking happy I could dance... except I use a walking frame and can't even walk lol. Grin

I'm still keeping the champagne for the 31st but I have a bottle of bubbly my sister brought me from France - going to put it in the freezer briefly and then having a glass or two.

Cheers Wine

hospitalityinspector · 23/01/2020 15:18

Free speciality coffees all round in that case Lily

SilverySurfer · 23/01/2020 15:20

Hospitality yes, the bottle is orange, the liquid is clear. I just prefer it to the normal Cointreau - I have a bottle on order with my supermarket delivery this week to treat myself.

I put a crate under my chair in the Arms earlier this morning, help yourself to a bottle.

hospitalityinspector · 23/01/2020 15:28

Ah, right Silvery, thanks. I love Cointreau in cocktails but I've never seen your one.

Saucery · 23/01/2020 15:42

howabout isn’t it strange, the impression we have of people and how they can differ so markedly. She looks untrustworthy to me, but that’s personal bias. I don’t like her accent as it sounds both exaggerated and thick.
On a political note, I don’t like her being backed by McDonnell. But it’s difficult to extricate that element of the Party from the newer people coming up, I suppose.

Saucery · 23/01/2020 15:44

Plus, in the interview with LK last night she said she’d rather be curled up on the couch with her young child (than going out partying?).
Which is fine, but Leader Of The Opposition is going to be a bit of shock for someone who prefers to do that.

Thistimetomorrow · 23/01/2020 15:51

Just back to hear the news that the WA has received Royal Assent. I can’t believe it’s really happening!
I’m remembering a post I read from a lady who’s father had bought a bottle of champagne to toast our leaving but has since died without seeing it come to fruition.
I will be thinking of her on the 31st. It will be a bitter sweet occasion for her.

AutumnRose1 · 23/01/2020 15:52

copper “ Any bacon harms left”

You’re not my GP are you?

That bottle looks amazing!
