Morning all!

I always think above speaks too quickly for a politician - the more words you get out the more trouble you can get into! 😂

Bearbehind · 23/01/2020 09:31

Gove not above!

Coppersulphate · 23/01/2020 10:03

Morning Bear,
I remember Gove on Andrew Marr. Marr asked a really long question about fishing rights and Gove said "yes"
Marr commented that he was used to the answers taking longer than the questions.
I have liked Gove ever since.

Coppersulphate · 23/01/2020 10:07

Dusty
Arab has just agreed to come and help install this bloody great coffee me hind thingy.
It will take some shifting and needs some shelving for the supplies.
I told him to just ask for the LL.
He'll be around later as he is not busy today
😉😉😉💪🏻

Coppersulphate · 23/01/2020 10:08

Sorry, Raab not Arab.
Autocorrect is getting worse

ommmward · 23/01/2020 10:26

I think Johnson's people's pmqs does a very clever job of taking the wind out of the sails of Corbyn's "I speak to and for the people" trick, where he used to spend pmqs relaying questions from Mrs Trellis in llandidod wells (now I'm annoyed that I can't remember which town Mrs Trellis is from).

Also, without taat-ing (can't face posting in the lion's den), and for you with a friendly arm squeeze, 🐻, THIS is a successful Brexit: where the democratic choice of the electorate is enacted by the elites. For me, it honestly doesn't matter whether it's a good idea or not, or whether we will be richer or poorer, more open as a society or more closed. The key thing is that we are still a democracy (it's possible that I spend too much time listening to Triggernometry).

Good morning all!

ommmward · 23/01/2020 10:28

North Wales. Mrs Trellis is from North Wales

hospitalityinspector · 23/01/2020 10:29

I really can't warm to Gove at all. I know it shouldn't be about personalities.

Lily, is your next Friday dinner a posh do? I haven't heard a single thing in our village about any Brexit celebrations, which is surprising as it's a leave area.

Raab's coming round later you say Copper? As pub inspector, I'll be around to check the health and safety aspect of his installation. Wink

MrsSnippyPants · 23/01/2020 10:39

Thanks for the good wishes. I'll just park myself by the fire with a bucket of tea. Give me a thump on the back if I stop breathing!

Bearbehind · 23/01/2020 12:01

ommmward I think that sums up the problem really - that’s your measure of success but not everyone will agree with it - I certainly don’t but such is life

Anyway, I don’t want to derail so, as you were. 🍻

NiceGuyNeddie · 23/01/2020 12:23

For me, it honestly doesn't matter whether it's a good idea or not, or whether we will be richer or poorer, more open as a society or more closed

Well I suppose if you don't expect anything you won't be disappointed! The idea that 'democracy' is served above any other need or expectation isn't going to cut the mustard with many others, if any others.

People have been led to believe that Brexit is a solution, a step in a direction to somewhere, even if they can't explain what it is, they will be waiting for something to happen. I can't imagine they will be satisfied with the idea that Brexit is the thing, entire of itself.

Coppersulphate · 23/01/2020 12:32

The trouble with starting Peoples's PMQs is that he will be expected to continue and that may be difficult.
There is a lot of interest at the moment because of new govt., Brexit etc but I think that may wear off.
There was a lot of support coming through yesterday as well as insults and complaints. I worry that the support may well go quiet as they get things done and Brexit is no longer a big divisive issue.
Also surely he'll have weeks when he can't be there.
I think either it should be different ministers each week or questions about a specific topic eg transport, all though that could be seen as restricting debate.
Brilliant idea of Dom's though.

Boris (and Dylan's) very short acceptance speech for parliamentarian of the year award from Spectator:

Grin
ommmward · 23/01/2020 12:35

You're right, bear, we shouldn't derail. (Mea culpa!) I wanted to give you my take on that question, just in case it was helpful to you.

There's a part of me - I don't know whether it's cynical, or filled with classicdmitri expectations or what - that wonders whether Johnson and Gove conspired at that take-boris-out moment. Leave the glass cliff vacancy to be filled by Leadsom or May. Wait for things to shake down, while planning like crazy for the take over.

ommmward · 23/01/2020 12:38

Posted too soon.

Wait for chaos to descend, then ride in (preferably like cowboys, shooting at the saloon bar doors and wearing lots of well worn leather) to save the day (or "save the day", depending on one's point of view)

ommmward · 23/01/2020 12:40

I think the people's pmqs is monthly. I certainly came across it in the autumn. Weekly definitely wouldn't sustain; monthly might.

hospitalityinspector · 23/01/2020 12:41

omm I think many of us have an over-developed level of cynicism due to all the political chicanery the last few years.

Saucery · 23/01/2020 12:47

ommmmward I’ve always thought that! The whole Brexit thing needed to play out, with people getting out of their system all the protests and legal challenges etc.
Any PM in that period was going to get chewed up and spat out and Johnson never wanted to be that PM.

Saucery · 23/01/2020 12:48

And hello, nice new gaff, btw, everybody Grin

Limer · 23/01/2020 12:51

Afternoon folks! I’ve had a hectic couple of weeks working, but that will now see me through until about Easter so I’m once again a temporary lady of leisure Grin

Podcasts – I’m a frequent user of BBC Sounds, I subscribe to various programmes and then listen when convenient.

Mrs Trellis – I went to the new ISIHAC live show last week, it was fantastic!

31st Jan – we're definitely celebrating, but quietly at home! I have a family member’s birthday that day, he’s a remainer Grin

Coppersulphate · 23/01/2020 12:54

Oh, Ommm, thanks for that. Yes monthly might be possible. Putin does it once a year but for 4 hours.

howabout · 23/01/2020 13:25

Hi all. Finally found you and caught up.

Still laughing at Ian on his bucket. I was over the Tay and the Forth Bridge yesterday but after googlemaps recommended an hour of hell on the M8 it will be some time before I recover sufficiently to go out towards the Skye Bridge in search of Oor Ian. Almost had my heid in a bucket to recover for most of the evening yesterday.

Just backtracking a bit on language and Sanpro in schools and Unis. Both my teenage DDs have friends who need Sanpro with either male or non-specific preferred pronouns. Any use of language which gives late teens the space to ask for Sanpro without embarrassment and without feeling the need to stand on their principles is better imo.

Loved Boris and Dylan accepting their Speccy Award. Grin

SilverySurfer · 23/01/2020 13:26

Afternoon everyone. Drags crate of blood orange Cointreau under my chair for after dinner.

The People's PMQs is a good idea and agree that monthly is more tenable and that Ministers could take questions on their Departments.

It has worked out rather well for Boris. Although I was never a fan and didn't vote for him in the leadership election, I think he's doing well. Of course, Theresa May was rather hamstrung by the lack of a majority and it made her job infinitely more difficult.

Just looking at the BBC news website - apparently Long-Bailey has said that trans women are women - how is that going to impact on her support, if at all, do you think?

Saucery · 23/01/2020 13:45

On an individual level I didn’t like her and still don’t, so her saying TWAW doesn’t make any difference apart from reinforcing the impression that the Labour Party Line is that ‘TWAW So Shut Up Natal Women’.

AutumnRose1 · 23/01/2020 13:46

Hello lovelies!

I have not been on the politics world at all last couple of days so will catch up.

Also never heard of blood orange Cointreau!

But will buy for whoever wants!
