The last one filled up quickly.

More discussion on the significance of Trump, Trumpism and the Trumpsters and what it all means for Blairites.

I think Orwell can help with that, just imagine that the elites are Men and the people are Animals, and Trump and his cohort are the pigs. You can guess which one is Napoleon.

I'd really like to know about Bull Gates, but I don't want to distract you from that list. Still, one name for it, just the why is missing.

Is it his charitable donations to development and science? How he has disinherited his children? How he hasn't been bankrupt?

Breaking news

"Austria presidential election: Far-right's Hofer defeated - projections

Far-right candidate Norbert Hofer has been defeated in Austria's presidential election, projections suggest.

The election was a re-run of May's poll which suffered irregularities.

If confirmed, the result will be welcomed by establishment parties in the EU

Hofer has conceded defeat. Greens won. Incredible. Hard to believe, but "it is wot it is"

squishysquirmy · 04/12/2016 16:41

Thank goodness for that! Finally some good news. "The people" of Austria told Hofer to fuck off then! I'm not going to take it for granted until the final results are in.
I assume you think it's rigged, Claig, because it didn't go your way?

claig · 04/12/2016 16:45

I think it is very strange as I think the Greens only beat Hofer last time due to the postal votes (which of course had "irregularities") and this time Hofer has conceded immediately without postal votes needing to be counted and as the Sky reporter said "this has come as a big surprise".

I wouldn't rule out "funny business" by the elites, but no one knows.

OP posts:
Roussette · 04/12/2016 16:53

No 'funny business'. They didn't want that far right trigger happy candidate in office. Simples.

claig · 04/12/2016 17:05

The margin of the predicted outcome based on exit polls is surprising, I think the Green candidate is about 5 or 6 percentage points ahead, whereas the polls before the election had the candidates supposedly neck and neck.

It was a Presidential election and I think teh President doesn't actually have that much power but for the EU it would have been a symbolic defeat so the elites were desperate.

Tonight in Italy is more significant for them because it could begin the process of disintegration of the Euro and then the EU.

Manuel Valls in France very pleased on twitter

Manuel Valls ‏@manuelvalls 46s Paris, France

Belle victoire d'Alexander @VanderBellen en Autriche. Le populisme n'est pas une fatalité pour l'Europe.

No reaction from Trump on twitter yet. The world awaits Trump.

Hed completely backed off a referendum promise Claig. And clearly mis-judged that one. Farage wasnt daft enough to believe a vote for brexit was a vote for UKIP. Appears that the early success Hofer had, whilst he was dancing round the referendum issue filled him with self confidence. Two candidates, no eu referendum. It is indeed wot it is.

2:29pm
'Don't interfere,' Austria's far-right presidential candidate tells Nigel Farage
Far-right candidate Nortbert Hofer has ruled out calling a referendum on Austria’s membership of the European Union, and called on Nigel Farage, the former Ukip leader, not to "interfere" in Austrian politics by calling for such a referendum.
“It is not something I want. We need to build a stronger union,” he said, although he made clear he would oppose Turkish membership or further moves to centralize the bloc.

SouthallGirl · 04/12/2016 17:24

Claig - The Austrian vote went that way because of the naturalised immigrants who have voting rights, and they voted against Hofer. There was a Useful Idiot and that's where their vote went.

claig · 04/12/2016 17:27

'“It is not something I want. We need to build a stronger union,”'

Hmmm. Sounds like the elites may have "got to him". He sounds worried that Trump may send Nigel in to shake things up a bit. Elites breathing more easily for now. Onto Italy next tonight.

Elites reeling, but staggering on.

OP posts:
SouthallGirl · 04/12/2016 17:37

If Hofer has ruled out a Referendum for Austria, that is a bit stinky, dont you think, Claig?

What defines him as Right wing or an independent in that case, if he wants to remain within the EU?

SouthallGirl · 04/12/2016 17:38

If Hofer said "We need to build a stronger union" then he's an EU man.

claig · 04/12/2016 17:45

If i remember rightly, Hofer conceded quite quickly the last time too and it was only some people in his party who looked further into the "irregularities" in the postal votes that forced the recount.

Hofer sounds like he is EU through and through. The turnout was only slightly up this time, so no difference in voters probably. Probably huge elite pressure on him. Strange large increase in margin of vote too. Could be the old "fishy business" and I don't mean catching cod.

OP posts:
Roussette · 04/12/2016 17:51

I reckon what's more strange is ... when it's not the candidate you want, it's 'fishy business' but when the Donald gets in it's the 'people talking'. Strange that...

Mind you... that was DT for you.....everything was rigged. Until he won.

claig · 04/12/2016 17:53

In reality, Brexit and Trump will have emboldened the people across Europe to challenge the elites. I would expect a victory for No in Italy, but either Renzi will be asked to remain in by the President or a team of technocrats (probably bankers) will be asked to take over to try and delay the inevitable.

Elites on their last legs, but staggering and wobbling about.

The world awaits Trump and his mischievous sidekick, Mr Nigel Farage.

We're all on tenterhooks. I wonder if they use pencils in Austria?? Shock

claig · 04/12/2016 18:06

' I wonder if they use pencils in Austria?'

Good question. A lot of us in the UK were well prepared in the Brexit Referendum and took pens with us to the polling booths. We were taking no chances.

OP posts:
squishysquirmy · 04/12/2016 18:08

Exactly Roussette.
It's interesting that the main only criticism of the Freedom party, now they've lost, is that Hofer hadn't promised an EU referendum. Not the other Far Right stuff.
I wonder if it is even possible for a party to be too nasty for some on here as long as they offered an EU referendum... Would the "Eat babies, kill puppies" party have the glowing endorsement of the Pro-Trumpers here as long as they promised a referendum?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/12/2016 18:09

Im curious as to why Trump would give a stuff about Austria?

Love the idea that it might be fishy business just because the Austrian people voted for the Green candidate. I thought the one thing that was obvious this year is that polls in the run up to elections are crap.

I suspect that Trumps election and Brexit woke up the sleepy people who realised that actually it was important to vote if they didn't want their country to lurch far right.

squishysquirmy · 04/12/2016 18:09

Swedish Grin don't start them on the pencils!
