Interesting article in the Spectator on Renzi and Italy. There is no escaping what is happening. The chickens are coming home to roost. All the stupid policies by the "very, very stupd people" we have been led by are now unravelling.

"Italy’s heading for its own Brexit moment"
...
"Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel prize-winning economist and former adviser to Bill Clinton, recently warned that the eurozone is heading for ‘a cataclysmic event’. Asked if the Italian referendum could be it, he replied: ‘That is a big risk.’ He said the only solution, however, was to cancel the referendum.

Last week, while filming a referendum video, Renzi took down the EU flags that for years have stood alongside the Italian flags behind the prime ministerial desk at Palazzo Chigi. Perhaps he too is getting a little superstitious. But win or lose on 4 December, there is big trouble ahead for Italy — and for the EU."

I'm sorry, Claig, but I don't think Trump gives one figleaf of shit about the American people. I do think he was a bit bored a couple of years ago and then ran with it. Much further than he probably intended.

However, now he gets to provide his sons and his son in law (that "non elite", whose father paid $1.5 million to get him into Harvard and now can provide a voice for the burgeoning Orthodox Jewish community. Brooklyn and Rockland County will thank him for that, I'm sure) with a political dynasty. I think that was always his ultimate goal.

Jeeze, the Trump doesn't even want to really live in the White House and wants to spend his weekends in NYC. That is NOT going to be helpful for a) all the stores and independents around Midtown and b) everyone in and outside NYC as, wheneverThe President is in town, it causes gridlock.

Spinflight · 18/11/2016 06:10

"I do think he was a bit bored a couple of years ago and then ran with it. Much further than he probably intended. "

He attended an event where Obama gave a speech which he used to repeatedly mock Trump over his birth certificate and other things..

www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/trump-and-obama-a-night-to-remember

I suspect that was when Trump decided he was going to run.

Which put's Obama's grim expression upon welcoming Trump to the White House in perspective. He created the Democratic party's nemesis and then had to shake his hand.

Tropezienne · 18/11/2016 09:00

Whilst I am no fan of Trump, at all. In fact I believe he's a total disgrace. Very unintelligent, for evidence just look at how he articulates..You really have to pinch yourself that you're not dreaming, when you think that America's foremost statesman actually believes that climate change is an Chinese invention.

I don't though think it's really possible to get to the absolute apex of political power by being uninterested in the destiny of his country and his fellow citizens. I think he does care. He definitely showed a passion and conviction that made Hillary look robotic and lifeless.

I just think he's going to be a catastrophe for all of us.

GlassCircles · 18/11/2016 09:24

I suspect that was when Trump decided he was going to run.

So it's all about alpha-male willy-waving then - no surprise there.

GlassCircles · 18/11/2016 09:25

Hi claig - thanks for your detailed response Smile I'll post again in a bit re what you have said.

GlassCircles · 18/11/2016 09:33

Absolutely because Trump needs people he can trust 100% because he is up against "the corrupt global establishment" and they don't play games and they have more money than Trump.

The only flaw in this plan is that a) hiring people on the basis of loyalty rather than ability isn't terribly smart in the long run if they can't do their jobs properly b) working with family and friends has a tendency to go tits up, leaving the person in the position of power isolated, angry and dangerous, with no 'real' professionals to shore up their working life.

GlassCircles · 18/11/2016 09:47

He will certainly fire anyone who doesn't come up to scratch because he said "this is not a game". He was in the Apprentice and "you're fired" was his line. He says he will drain the swamp and anyone not up to it will have to go.

Whilst it might work when you own and control the company, he can't fire the rest if the world if it doesn't cooperate. Let's hope he learns to know and manage his boundaries very well. ime this type, whilst often very politically astute and manipulative, tends to get carried away by vanity alliances which skews their judgement.

Spinflight · 18/11/2016 10:06

No hiring people that he trusts is smart. He's rather famously quick to fire people who aren't up to the job.

Claig is onto something when she talks about the corrupt global establishment though and I doubt many people have really thought through the implications.

Trump might be a billionaire but he's also a normal bloke. He bases his opinions on the same sources that we do whether mainstream or fringe. He hasn't had access to secret intel other than through wikileaks.

Why is this important?

Well it's never been mentioned explicitly in the campaign that I know of but why do you think that a society that has very low numbers of Muslim immigrants has voted for extreme vetting, or a complete ban on Muslims entering the country if they didn't read the small print?

Well the answer is close to home. The alt right particularly in America as enshrined by talk radio and right leaning forums uses us as an example. The UK and Sweden in particular.

The Rotherham child abuse scandal, whilst never mentioned in polite circles anymore for fears of being thought racist, ( it was allowed to perpetuate for the same reason which hollowly laughs out of town the idea that political correctness is merely politeness) sent Americans into a gun buying frenzy.

I doubt you could find a forum devoted to firearms, hunting, or probably any hobby where Americans don't discuss in shock what could happen to their country - the meme is generally that they are a decade or two behind the times but that it will happen here ( there).

Add in the Swedish rape scandal, police watching on whilst new years eve revellers were molested all over Europe and you have a news story which is far bigger on the States than over here.

It's a big topic with the alt right as well. Right wing radio shock jocks are important over there. Along with heads of state Trump called Alex Jones at infowars and promised to appear on his show soon. Guess what one of his bugbears has been?

As Obama mocked Trump there is a grain of truth in what he said. I suspect he'll be looking at swamps outside of Washington too, aided by our Nigel who still has quite a bee in his bonnet over such things himself. Can't imagine why.

squishysquirmy · 18/11/2016 10:07

Look at this charismatic leader, fighting the establishment and the elite. See how he selflessly puts the interests of the little guy above his own ambitions? He's amazing, the real deal. You'd love him Claig.

squishysquirmy · 18/11/2016 10:11

He's been horribly smeared as evil by the neo-liberal lion media elite, just because he said and did evil things! But he's going to Make The Savannah Great Again.

GlassCircles · 18/11/2016 14:44

No hiring people that he trusts is smart. He's rather famously quick to fire people who aren't up to the job.

That's a contradiction though, when the only people you truly trust are members of your own family and close friends - who are unlikely to be the best qualified candidates for the job.

BoredofBrexit · 18/11/2016 15:00

Claig - I have to say that Trump has a plan! Looks like his transition team appointments are taking shape nicely and he is holding his ground well.

Spinflight · 18/11/2016 15:08

Bannon, Flynn, Sessions and Pompeo announced so far... Unless you know something I don't.

No family in there.. Bannon seems to be a close friend, the rest looney tunes outsiders.

Pallisers · 18/11/2016 15:20

No family in there.

he can't hire family - there is legislation forbidding it. There is some chatter about whether his son in law could even take an unpaid named role in the white house - consensus seems to be that he can't.

BoredofBrexit · 18/11/2016 15:26

Spin...just those so far but it's a decent start i think.

GlassCircles · 18/11/2016 15:30

he can't hire family - there is legislation forbidding it.

I bet that's the first law he tries to change!

Spinflight · 18/11/2016 15:40

"Spin...just those so far but it's a decent start i think."

Interesting start... Seems very hard right to me, which before the usual suspects start crowing about Austrian gentlemen of historical interest does surprise me.

Kaija · 18/11/2016 15:41

More on those appointments: Alabama senator previously deemed too racist to be a federal judge to be Attorney General.

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-attorney-general-jeff-sessions-racism-senate-usa-a7424341.html

Spinflight · 18/11/2016 15:46

And that from a Republican controlled Senate...

claig · 18/11/2016 16:09

'he's going to Make The Savannah Great Again.'

Very good, squishy Grin

GlassCircles, Trump is not hiring his family, they are only part of the transition team. Ivanka sat in on the meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, but they won't get top jobs. However, from what I have seen of Donald Trump Junior, he is excellent, and I think he will be the next president after Trump.

Sessions was the first senator to back Trump, very strong on controlling the border and against the free tarde deals, so not bought and paid, therefore good.

General Mike Flynn is excellent, understands exactly what Isis is all about and all the backed and funded Jihadis, so very good. However, I have heard him saying something like Iran is behind Al Qaeda or something like that, which I don't believe, so it may spell bad news for Iran, and I don't think that is great as Iran may be able to be brought into an overall Middle East deal.

Bannon, good because he is anti-establishment, anti globalisation etc

Pompeo, I have never heard of so can't say.

Bad news is that Trump is talking to Romney and politically correct Nikki Haley who were both against him throughout the campaign.

So - Donny Jnr won't be a member of the elite in any way, then?

Kaija · 18/11/2016 16:48

What this donny junior?

Trump
InformalRoman · 18/11/2016 16:50

And this Donny Junior?
