I've just done a political 'what party to support' survey and I'm horrified!

Umlauf · 01/03/2013 10:14

I've only voted in 2 elections, Labour when I was 18 and Lib Dem at the last one, although I was heavily leaning towards Tory but was taken in by the Lib Dem student friendly lies!

The survey has come out as 80% UKIP. This is the last thing I would ever have expected being a Euro fanatic and relying on the EU for h2bs employment and living abroad! The other 20% was LibDem for my views on education. I though I could spot the UKIP policies a mile off but clearly I was very wrong...

So who do I bloody vote for?!

The survey was this one voteforpolicies.org.uk/ anyone else care to share results vs expectations?

Additional information: I have never been politically minded and its only now whilst I'm starting a new family that I've begun to take an interest and learn more about politics, so I am, I suppose, quite naive in the area. From a very Tory town on London commuter belt and family half strong Tory supporters with a little bit of labour thrown into the mix.

I was 44% green, 38% UKIP and the rest split equally between Labour and the Lib Dems. Surprised me. I am an immigrant (in another country) and for the EU.

Green 44.44%
Lib Dems 33.33%
Labour 22.22%

I live in a Tory constituency where Labour might stand a chance of getting back in next time. Not a chance that the Greens or Lib Dems (especially now) will win the seat.

(Although apparently order on policies in my constituency is

  1. Labour
  2. Green Party
  3. Conservatives
  4. Lib Dems
  5. UKIP
  6. BNP )

I did one that just gave a single party as the result and weirdly it was UKIP!

However I would never vote for them as I do not like/trust on a gut level any of the members I have heard speak.

I agree that it should let you weight your opinions.

Not just "which do you prefer" but also "how strongly do you prefer it".

isn't it nice that we're all so stunned at our results that it hasn't descended into the usual 'bunfight'?!

Can't remember the numbers but I came out clearly Green last time I did this survey. Sadly the Greens are in no way represented in my part of the world.

I wish they had more oomph as party; would get bigger and become an actual viable option somewhere other than Bristol. I hate all the other parties with a passion.

Not sure which of the last 2 I am more embarrassed by.

We need the Mumsnet Party - as with a mix of the cherry picked best policies we could really sort this shit out.

Crikey I'm 33% Tory (Democracy, Europe, Health Confused ) I would not have said that at all. I'm having another glass of wine and a sit down. This is not Like Me

I'm also 33% Lib Dem good grief it seems like I support the condems! Crime, environment economy
22% Labour which is what I actually voted -Immigration & Welfare
11% Green - they got me on education

It was really interesting, it also drove home that sometimes voting "for" can be as much voting "against"... also that anyone can look good on paper it's whether they deliver on these promises.

Totally bizarre, I always vote Labour (but despite numerous moves always end up living in a Tory area Grin).

I got 22.22% each for Labour, Greens, UKIP and Lib Dems, with 11.11% for Conservatives. No BNP thank god. Doesn't help me much when voting though, does it Grin. In my constituency Labour is in the lead, very closely followed by Green Party.

Haven't done survey - just not surprised that the minor parties (Greens, BNP, UKIP) are doing well - as someone said up thread - they are unlikely to get into power so they can have fairyland policies...a bit like what has happened to the Lib Dems now they have some power...
(Aside here - one of my personal annoyances this - and not saying this is true of anyone here - just the idea that because you are not white/an immigrant you can't be racist - all 'races' can be intolerant of others - one of the most shockingly racist interactions I have have heard -years ago now - was an argument that started over a bathroom refit between my ex-landlady (of black Caribbean origin) and a plumber (apparently I found out - of black African origin)....
Finally most people have no idea what the policies are of the people they vote for ...I remember in 1997 a flatmate of mine saying he was going to vote for Tony Bleurghhhhh. Asked him why and he said because he thought he (young, educated, single, no responsibilities....earning 30k+ as a trainee then) should have free eye tests ... and under Labour they would be free....Hmm Are you sure that is one of their policies ? It will be if they get into power Confused

Strangely I am a labour voter but struggled to just pick 4 topics. Live in a strong Tory seat but totally disagree with most of their policies...although they didn't stick to them anyway.

44.44% Lib Dem
22.22% Tory bugger me
22.22% Green
11.11% Labour

Long time Labour voter who frustratedly voted Lib Dem last time (although pointlessly as am in Labour stronghold)

Crime ? Green Party
Democracy ? Conservatives
Economy ? Lib Dems
Education ? Lib Dems
Environment ? Green Party
Europe ? Lib Dems
Health / NHS ? Conservatives
Immigration ? Lib Dems
Welfare ? Labour

I'm not that shocked that I picked Tory policies tbh. They've often said things that I've agreed with. The problem is that I don't trust them not to implement things in such a way that screws the masses over the top 5% (apologies for double negative!) Actions speak louder than words...

Interestingly, I live in one of the most labour constituencies in the country. Most labour MPs in this area are labour left and have huge majorities - my constituency is TB's old seat. BUT, the constituency results we fairly evenly spread, with no party registering much more than about 20% of opinion in the poll.
