I've just done a political 'what party to support' survey and I'm horrified!

Umlauf · 01/03/2013 10:14

I've only voted in 2 elections, Labour when I was 18 and Lib Dem at the last one, although I was heavily leaning towards Tory but was taken in by the Lib Dem student friendly lies!

The survey has come out as 80% UKIP. This is the last thing I would ever have expected being a Euro fanatic and relying on the EU for h2bs employment and living abroad! The other 20% was LibDem for my views on education. I though I could spot the UKIP policies a mile off but clearly I was very wrong...

So who do I bloody vote for?!

The survey was this one voteforpolicies.org.uk/ anyone else care to share results vs expectations?

Additional information: I have never been politically minded and its only now whilst I'm starting a new family that I've begun to take an interest and learn more about politics, so I am, I suppose, quite naive in the area. From a very Tory town on London commuter belt and family half strong Tory supporters with a little bit of labour thrown into the mix.

78% Green, 22% Labour.

Not surprised, Green are about the most leftwing of the mainstream parties I think. I generally vote Labour but have voted Green in Europe.

56% Green
33% Lib Dem
11% Conservative (on the economy!)

I have often voted Green in the past, so no surprise there. I have often liked the viewpoint of the Lib Dems, but I would hesitate to vote for them, now, considering their actions within the coallition.

I didn't do all the categories, but got 60/40 LibDem/Labour. Problem is, even if I agree with a lot of LibDem policies (and actually have a LibDem MP), it's useless if they are just the minor party in a coalition - their policies are irrelevant. And I went for policies that seemed realistic, otherwise I'd probably have got a bit of Green party in the mix.

'And I went for policies that seemed realistic'

Then how did you get 40% Labour????

Report
GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 01/03/2013 14:30

I came out:
Labour 44.44%
Green Party 33.33%
Lib Dems 22.22%

I'm not surprised to be honest. I usually vote Lib Dem but am probably in a lifelong sulk with them. I would, somewhat reluctantly, vote Labour if there was an election tomorrow. I'm not keen on Ed Milliband though and still pretty disgusted about the way New Labour was when in power...

The problem is that it ignores the fact that some policies are "nice to have" and some are "deal breakers". I wouldn't vote for Conservatives because of their social policies, but prefer some of their educational policies (if they didn't pair them with budget cutting). It would be better if you could put a weighting on each issue.

I think the reason a lot of people are coming out high on the Greens is that because they are never likely to form a government they can be a bit more idealistic with the policies, especially the ones which are NOT environmental. I came out Green on NHS and Immigration probably because I believe in a state controlled large well funded NHS (as most left wingers do in theory!) and relatively free immigration. In reality these things are hard to afford and, in the case of immigration, not always popular with the grass roots of the Labour party. But if you're playing fantasy manifestoes they are attractive.

Ironically I actually came out Labour on the Environment!

According to it, I should vote BNP closely followed by UKIP.

Given that I'm an immigrant I have probably more than most to fear from the BNP and I really don't want the UK to leave the EU.

I'm not sure how accurate this survey is.

11% UKIP

Well I have voted LibDem since I was 21 so quite nice to see that I actually do agree with their policies Smile

Went off Labour in a big way after T. bLIAR

Unfortunately people will still vote for personalities not policies, no matter what you do. Our MP is A Lansley and although he's done some bad stuff to the NHS, he's actually a really good local MP and very active here. I'd vote for him myself if it wasn't for the fear of being smote by my dead granny's hand Grin

Well if you agree with the BNP/UKIP policies [which knowing you a bit on here Id say you do!] then it must be accurate?

I always thought that one of the big criticisms of Labour at the moment is the fact that they are very policy light - and havn't really nailed their colours to the mast.

Tactical voting is perhaps the worst type of voting - you end up with a whole mash of what no-one wants.

Getting into power is also a case of a party having the will to want to lead and be in power

44.44% UKIP

11.11% Labour

That's a really interesting test. Thanks for the link. I'm actually shocked!

Well it could never be accurate because people don't actually vote for the party whose policies they most support due to our ridiculous first past the post, geographic constituencies system. The Green Party has the policies I like best but I would absolutely vote labour or lib dem in a marginal seat that might go to the Tories. Depending on where you live, you can end up voting defensively rather than voting for smaller parties that you actually prefer. That said, I now live in an utterly safe labour seat, so I can vote green (and it won't make any difference to anyone).

niceguy to his shock, my husband got BNP too as one slice of his results. I think it was some of the welfare-to-work policies he ticked (he is unemployed). Nothing to do with immigration, etc.

Haven't done the survey and won't. Policies schmolicies. What any party says in their manifesto isn't necessarily a good reflection of where they will put their effort (and how effectively) if in power. UKIP and the BNP have got a lot of doorstep mileage out of having lots of terribly reasonable policies. Their actual ability to run the rest of the country is seriously suspect, in my very humble opinion.

66% Green, with 11% each Lib Dem, UKIP and Conservative. Latter doesn't suprise me, despite being a rabid lefty there's bound to be some things I agree with them on.

BUT I think shows why Labour are struggling - I'm pretty sure I'm not the only tribal labour voter who doesn't identify at all with the London/intellectual/policy wonk centric bunch who run them now.

Luckily I live in Wales so I can vote Plaid Grin

"UKIP and the BNP have got a lot of doorstep mileage out of having lots of terribly reasonable policies. Their actual ability to run the rest of the country is seriously suspect, in my very humble opinion."

The trouble is, despite the fact that so many of us like their policies, I think the same is sadly true of the Greens.

I think that the Greens have proven, with Caroline Lucas, that they can field strong candidates well worthy of their place in parliament. Are they ready to run the country? Of course not. Are they ready to have more MPs? Absolutely!
