Because I do. They make sense to me. Reward the workers, esp. those in low paid employment, and make it harder to be better off unemployed than working. If ConDem also taxed the rich in an appropriate mnner, I would be very happy.

The problem is the lack of council housing. To me, that's really the crux of the problem. That's why benefits cost a lot, because rents (particularly in London) are artificially high. Landlords push them up because they know the government will have to pay them.

Our flat, for example, tiny, one bedroom, in the basement, zone 2, not a scabby area, not particularly lovely either is £1000 a month. That's £12000 a year. Just on rent. So if you have kids, imagine how much your HB is.

People who live outside London don't seem to understand that capping benefits at 26K is just not going to work. These people aren't exactly throwing money around - it is bloody hard to survive here on that money.

In fact, let me work it out for you. The very cheapest rent for a 3 bed round here is probably about £350 a week. That works out at about £17000 a year. Then add on CT, that's another £1000. So £18000 just on those. That leaves you with a sweet £8000 to play with - about £600 a month. For bills, transport (and transport here is sky high), food, clothes, everything.

Enough to live on, maybe, but hardly the life of luxury some imagine it to be.
