Well, why not MNers?

What have your kids got to lose? In NY there are alot of families with children protesting and occupying that doesn't get mentioned in the mainstream press.

glasnost heard they got watercannoned in Rome - are you OK?

Disputandum · 16/10/2011 07:55

The ft reporting that the protests in Rome did turn violent and further arrests in the US too.

Disputandum · 16/10/2011 07:57

You can just close the registration barrier to see the story on the home page.

GrumpyInRepose · 16/10/2011 13:01

70 injured in Rome....

scarevola · 16/10/2011 13:28

Barely happening in London. Small sit in which is only making a handful of local news reports. As was the case for the bridge "occupation" - brief, did get mentioned on traffic reports.

It would be overdoing it considerably to say there is much support for OT impact from these demos on UK.

glasnost · 16/10/2011 13:50

Ta for the interest alice. I'm fine and only trouble I saw was some burnt out cars and smashed windows. Am too long in the claw to get involved in ructions. As ever the police there were heavy handed and looking for the teensiest excuse to kick off. If noone was killed it's thanx to the protesters not getting sucked in by them. Having said that there were some anarchists who went with trouble on their mind. These demos should be organised better as they used to be BY THE UNIONS and the PARTIES. But I'm old fashioned like that. Media here have latched on to the unrest to discredit the entire movement.

Seems Occupy London going quite well and 70 odd tents.

Just tried to work out what's happening in London now, but couldn't. Someone stuck a Westminster road sign for Tahrir Square EC4 on a wall which was fun. Onward and upward.

glasnost · 16/10/2011 20:49

If you wanto know what's happening in London alice follow the livestream here although must say it's not very good as of yet. Teething probs most prob. You were prob referring to this livestream when you said you weren't abe to find out what's going on.

OP posts:
aliceliddell · 18/10/2011 11:06

glasnost livestream unreliable, but have seen video etc. Looks good. Now, all we need is a revolutionary organisation

glasnost · 18/10/2011 14:07

Don't wander off alice. Get your revolutionary, organised self to the occupation and explain why. The movement will burn out and run out of steam if there's no political centrifuge. (Is that English?) I've already had this conversation with alot of those involved in NY.

It's pretty much burnt out in UK - not that its flame was much more than a flicker here in the first place. Whatever the impact in other countries, it's not achieving anything here.

No news coverage, numbers reducing.

IntergalacticHussy · 18/10/2011 14:25

actually that quote earlier is by Tony Benn, not Gandhi.

glasnost · 18/10/2011 14:31

Ah well Edith if there's no news coverage that means it's pretty much burnt out, does it? And 500 odd occupiers isn't an inconsiderable amount all things considered.

OP posts:
EdithWeston · 18/10/2011 14:35

It's neither - though it is often misattributed to Gandhi (but no record of him actually saying it exists).

But this does: "And, my friends, in this story you have a history of this entire movement. First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. And then they attack you and want to burn you. And then they build monuments to you. And that, is what is going to happen to the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America."

General Executive Board Report and Proceedings of the Biennial Convention, Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, 1914.

I don't think it's so catchy in its full form, and the predictions for monuments never came to pass.

EdithWeston · 18/10/2011 14:40

As no-one is reporting on it, it's hard to verify figures. I saw an account it was down to 200, and shrinking.

Whatever the aims of the groups therein, they do not seem to be getting them across to any audience nor are they garnering any momentum.

The "movement" probably looks quite different outside UK, especially in places where there have been significantly larger (or growing) events. But it's just not breaking the surface here.

hardboiledpossum · 18/10/2011 15:24

It's not shrinking it has been growing numbers. I think there were around 200 tents last night up from about 70 the first night. They are having regular meetings to establish some clear objectives but it is a democratic process and takes time. They have even set up a library and will be holding their first book group tonight!

glasnost · 18/10/2011 15:33

Don't be put off by that quite ridiculous at times chatroll that accompanies the livestream either. I was even accused of being a gchq troll by the adolescent armchair revolutionaries who go on there. When I mentioned I'm a 40 year old mum with more than 20 years of political activism under her belt they claimed I was actually a bloke infiltrating them! Paranoia doesn't help the cause.

OP posts:
aliceliddell · 18/10/2011 18:06

glasnost Of course it will be ignored as much as poss, but there are marches going through soon (fees & cuts? on 9th Nov, Fawcett Soc 'cutting women out' 19th, then the big one on N30) so maybe it'll get bigger from them? You're not a spy, then?

glasnost · 18/10/2011 18:25

Yeah check me out in my mac and false tach!

OP posts:
aliceliddell · 19/10/2011 13:17

Suits you, actually.

OP posts:
Disputandum · 19/10/2011 16:14

I was looking forward to the debate, but feel disappointed now; they don't make a very good case at all. They were too busy chatting with each other to answer any of the trickier questions, and still don't seem to know what exactly they are calling for or campaigning against. Every time I see a protestor interviewed, they say something different. I suppose I just wanted to know what they want to replace the current system, and how they intend to achieve it.

Also, it's ironic that they are doing their shopping in tesco - and accepting food from m&s - if they are after overthrowing the corporate overlords I think (if indeed that is what they want, hard to tell).

aliceliddell · 19/10/2011 17:17

I have tried and failedmany times to post the results of the poll 'Do you support the Occupy London protest. Result :88.9% voted Yes.
