k999 - don't know that i'd call Eck 'pretty' :o
catpower- agree hopefully they've learned something from the last fiasco!

OooohShiny · 06/05/2011 21:17

Oh good god, yes Cat...let' hope so

MollysChamber · 06/05/2011 21:48

I'll be voting against independence but,

what amuses me greatly is all the bigots who appear on these threads spouting forth their shite about how "their" taxes keep all of "us" in the manner to which we have become accustomed (sitting around on the dole drinking Buckie apparently) don't get to vote. Grin

Thereby rendering their ignorant opinions entirely inconsequential.

fartingfran · 06/05/2011 22:10

I do have a lovely warm feeling of optimism today. I remember feeling much the same at the last elections, exhilarated and pinching myself. I didn't for a moment think we'd come this far so soon, but that's largely testament to the good work of the SNP-led government to date.

I agree that there are many challenges ahead, financial, legal, political, practical, logistical. But if there's anyone whose judgement I trust to lead Scotland and fight for its best interests it's Alex Salmond.

i just came on to make the same point as Aitch, if England were propping us up, Cameron would be tripping over himself to ditch us.

Not necessarily. Some of us English Tories have an emotional and historic affection for the Union. It is stretched a bit thin at the moment. Scotland is an expensive hobby."

and fuck off.

Browncoats · 06/05/2011 22:28

Earlier someone was speaking about Kevin Mackenzie being an arse and anti-Scottish, where was he speaking? I can't find it online to have a look.

I too think that DC and previous tory governments would have split the union if we were "an expensive hobby" Hmm. ahem trident at Helensburgh ahem wind and wave power ahem oil ahem tourism/weddings in Scottish castles/golf. Yeah, you're probably right anyway Abr1de, we have nothing to offer... Fuck off...

AitchTwoOh · 06/05/2011 22:39

my norwegian pals are always knocked out that we aren't independent. my norwegian friends, who are a teacher and an engineer and have just bought a speedboat for the summer water-skiiing season at their summer cabin. [high standard of living]

honestly, it's posts like Abride's that make me want to leave the Union. i wonder if it could ever happen... once spoke to a british former ambassador who was convinced we could go it alone absolutely fine.

MollysChamber · 06/05/2011 22:42

I would love Scotland to be more like Norway politically. Very high taxes accompany that high standard of living though.

AitchTwoOh · 06/05/2011 22:45

well yes. but their wages are also high. i think the 'sentimental' english tory element has always wanted to keep taxes down so that the rich remain richer. in norway, from what chums tell me, everything is flatter and fairer.

MollysChamber · 06/05/2011 22:52

Oh aye it would be worth it. Much fairer society in my opinion.

Their childcare is amazing - cheap and flexible - so much easier for women to return to work. Very flexible attitude to work also so much better life / work balance.

Norway has loads going for it.

AitchTwoOh · 06/05/2011 22:58

and they parents and stay in a hotel with room service and bfing counsellors on tap just after having a baby.

AitchTwoOh · 06/05/2011 22:58

whoops, that went a bit wonky. parents go and stay in hotel etc.

fartingfran · 06/05/2011 23:00

I think there are a lot of people in Scotland who would be happy to see taxes rise in order to make ours a fairer society.

OP posts:
trixymalixy · 06/05/2011 23:02

I think voters in Scotland were left with no option but to vote SNP, having been let down so badly by the three "main" parties. The best of a bad lot as someone said earlier in the thread. It doesn't necessarily mean they want independence though.

I don't really think the figures stack up economically for independence. No-one seems to be taking into account that the oil is running out. What happens then?

AitchTwoOh · 06/05/2011 23:03

and this might be me being sentimental but i wonder if the scumbaggier element (for we cannot deny that they exist) might be motivated to get off their arses a bit more when it's do or die for national pride? [hopeful]

trixymalixy · 06/05/2011 23:05

Doubt it Aitch!! It's too ingrained in our culture.

TapselteerieO · 06/05/2011 23:05

I agree bring on higher taxes, for a fairer society it would be worth it.

K999 · 06/05/2011 23:05

Aitch I think your optimism is taking you too far! Grin

And if the oil ever runs out we shall fashion more out of seaweed, haggis and bag pipes....Grin

trixymalixy · 06/05/2011 23:06

I totally agree about higher taxes as well.

AitchTwoOh · 06/05/2011 23:06

tbh trixy they've been saying that for as long as i can remember, and it's not happening. there was a report a few years ago saying that there is decades' worth of oil there. what we would do with the money, presumably, is copy the scandies and try to build up a float of sovereign wealth. a lot can be achieved in 'decades'.

trixymalixy · 06/05/2011 23:07

I'm sure that'll work K999 might be waiting several million years though!!

AitchTwoOh · 06/05/2011 23:07

what does norway do with its scumbags? (leave them on an ice floe to die?)

trixymalixy · 06/05/2011 23:10

But have recent reports not said that they totally overestimated how much oil was left?

I thought latest opinion was that we have hit peak oil already and are on the downward slope.

Guess that depends on which reports you read though!! Grin

AitchTwoOh · 06/05/2011 23:12

guess so. i dunno, i honestly remember being about seven and watching people on telly saying that the oil was running out...
