Them and us - why posh Tories who claim to care about social mobility haven't got a clue

...and are patronising bastards to boot.

"The Camerons know how to 'work' their connections, too. David Cameron got his first job as a researcher for Tim Rathbone, his godfather and Conservative MP for Lewes.

Three months later he went to Hong Kong to work at the conglomerate Jardine Matheson - Daddy was stockbroker to the chairman, providing a fast-track into the business world.

When the young Cameron was due to attend a job interview at Conservative Central Office, a phone call was received from Buckingham Palace. "I understand you are to see David Cameron," said the caller. "I am ringing to tell you that you are about to meet a truly remarkable young man."

It has been speculated that the mystery call was from Captain Sir Alastair Aird, Equerry to the Queen Mother and husband of Cameron's godmother. The Airds vigorously denied it. Others have suggested the caller might have been Sir Brian McGrath, a family friend who was private secretary to Prince Philip. But he, too, though named as a referee for the job, denies it firmly".

You couldn't make it up could you? They're all in it together.

Southeast, I suspect you are right, the old school tie is alive and well.

OliPolly · 12/04/2011 21:50

There are too many universities in the UK

There are too many universities in the UK

As there was a shortage of places last year may I ask how you come to that conclusion, logic says there are to few.

swc, then again it may be so you can have your sense of entitlement reinforced by an overpriviledged clique.

I do however understand your childs stated needs and am disgusted they cannot be catered for in the state sector and the fact that others with less rescources will suffer

breadandbutterfly · 12/04/2011 22:03

smallwhitecate - pot. kettle. black.

Your comment is amazing after all the insults you've just thrown at anyone daring to be left wing.

claig if you have to quote the Daily Mail in your support, you have lost the argument.
It's for people who need big colourful pictures with their news, people who are still in comic mode intellectually.

oops, I seem to still have been on page two here!!

moondog you ask what public schools are doing right, what makes people spend their money on them? It's obvious isn't it? They're keeping out all the working class kids- the ones nobody wants their kids to mix with. That's also why people move to sightlier neighbourhoods which strangely enough, often tend to have the 'better' state schools in them.

newwave · 12/04/2011 22:26

swc

I do put my money where my mouth is every month as I have a standing order to two children's charities.

I have also run more than a few marathons and half marathons where I have raised in excess of £11,000 in aid of a local hospice and the NSPCC

So I have nothing to apologise for in that regard.

I will visit the sites and if I agree with their policies I promise I will make a donation.

I will continue to object to private education for a privileged few whilst recognising (as I did) that for some their is no other choice and for other it is just bought privilege.

btw, can you explain how Eton and Harrow are charities.

Want2bSupermum · 12/04/2011 22:28

It isn't just the Tories who don't have a clue about social mobility but most people working in the upper levels of government. If you look at their career progression most have never had a proper job in the private sector.

What annoys me more are people like Harriet Harman who talk about making society more equal and if you scratch under the surface you see the truth. She is very well connected to people such as Antonia Frazer (who is a Lady) and went to St. Pauls Girls. She then sent both of her children to grammar schools, one to London Oratory School. Her father was a Harley Street doctor.

I am conservative, not Conservative and I don't rate many of those running the country. I was flabbergasted to read that Nick Clegg was going to post internship positions online to open access to everyone. Really? Why hasn't it always been this way? All internship positions should be posted externally as no internal candidate would be qualified to apply.

Want2bSupermum · 12/04/2011 22:31

newwave I don't have a problem with private education but I have a problem with politicians who benefited from private education trying to restrict access. School fees have risen faster than inflation and this has been due to the strict criteria required of them to maintain their charitable status.

If anything parents should be encouraged to go private so less money would need to be spent by the government on educating children.

Look at the work of the Sutton Trust. Their graphs showing that the lines for 'high income low ability' and 'low income high ability' cross over are just infuriating. What a dire waste of working class talent. What a success for thick, posh twats (George Osborne?)

claig · 12/04/2011 22:35

'claig if you have to quote the Daily Mail in your support, you have lost the argument.

wook, that's why I posted it for you

wook · 12/04/2011 22:36

want2bsupermum what a fantastic idea, for the government to spend less money on educating children. It's just a total waste of time, isn't it, education.

claig you are doing nothing to reassure me that people who support the Tories are in any way decent, clever OR funny.

newwave · 12/04/2011 22:39

Unless you object to decent educational provision for kids with ASD, newwave

swc, I have already said I dont and I understand that these are real charities.

I cannot however see how Eton and Harrow are.

Want2, many things are rising faster than inflation, rail fares and fuel for example thats life under the Tories.

wook I think your mind is made up, it is closed fast and shut tight and that is your problem. As smallwhitecat says that is a strange attitude for a teacher. To dismiss the millions of Tory voters as not being decent, clever or funny seems very decent of you.

nulliusxinxverbax · 12/04/2011 22:41

ha ha ha Smallwhitecat, very clever

I love the way you just used your sons special needs to justify sending him to private school, and try and make us all feel guilty and stupid.

How is it an advantage you say?
Well how about acknowledging the many, many SN children who have to go to state schools. You were as good as saying his SN is a disadvantage for him, well think how much worse that must be for the same child in a state school.

And why should newwave have to donate to a charity of your choice to make her argument valid?? We can all be concerned about the welfare of SN children.....it doesnt justify buying unfair, undeserved advantage
