The Welfare Reform Bill

I am watching IDS and Davey on New24.

The top line seems to be:

  1. Simplify system and make work pay - universal credit system which will be simpler and mean that it will always pay to work.
  1. Sanctions - tougher and limits on what people will receive, especially HB. Prosecutions on all cheats. If you turn down jobs you will be refused benefits.
  1. Take out the top down bureaucracy and use innovative solutions. Training, help and support for those who are fit to work - from specialist companies. Paid by good results - not like the previous system. Paying companies the money they save from paying out benefits.

Also get to grip with those who don't stick out jobs once they are in it - review to end the sick note culture.

Disabled - DLA will get it whether they work or not. Those who can't work will be supported.

Wants a culture of responsibility and make the system simpler.

Having worked in this sector doing some quite innovative work, (even if I say so myself), some of it makes sense e.g. the simplification of all the benefits, but as the woman from Shelter is saying, the contractual system in providing services is too complicated and prohibitive to organisations that really can make a difference.

IDS is making a promise though, so let's see.

If the current proposals stop idiots like this then it can only be a good thing.

MummieHunnie · 17/02/2011 17:18

Niceguy, there is always going to be loopholes, and people will find ways around them, I am rubbish at that type of thing, and I found one already without even trying!

ScramVonChubby · 17/02/2011 17:28

Only be a good ting niceguy?

Collaterel damage for people such as the disabled is a fgood thing if it stops one or two wankers in the process?

Why can't we have a system that manges both- only that would be a good thing.

budugs · 17/02/2011 18:18

whilst being in support of a simplified benefits system, i do not like the idea of cutting benefits to sick and disabled people.

although i hate to talk about benefit fraud in relation to sick and disabled people, i know many people cannot read about benefits whithout thinking about fraud.

can i say one thing fraud within the benefit system runs at 0.1% of total benefit expeniture (office of national statitics)which is minute in comparison to fraud commited within the insurance industry, charities ect ect.

the diffence is a benefits a safety net, fraud is a crime.

but stop esa to the sick and disabled after one year and making eligibility for dla - which today has been abolished and replaced with a pip, before the closing consultaion date of feb 18 has been reached - much harder - and for those who have or are in the process of going through know how diffiercult it is to get - this is the crime not fraud commited by a very small minority.

do not punish the many for the crime of the few.

and realise there for the grace of god go i.

MummieHunnie · 17/02/2011 18:20

Budugs, the kids didn't want to have the news on what is a pip?

budugs · 17/02/2011 18:27

ladyblablah

mr smith stated this morning that the private sector is expanding and creating more jobs but yesturday, mr smiths dw dept realesed figures showing that the private sector is static.

the guardian have a story running about benefits being cut to blind people, if anyone would care to take a look.

whats the old saying "when a poltcian opens his mouth he,s lying."

LadyBlaBlah · 17/02/2011 18:30

There is also one fundamental error in the 'reforms', which is that people are motivated by money alone.

In my experience, people are very rarely motivated by money

i,m sorry but i don,t see any eastern europeans working in my local pubs, clubs or anywhere else for that matter in my area.

i do know that last week it was reported that 55 people applied for 2 posts in my city centre.

GabbyLoggon · 17/02/2011 18:42

done against a background of almost one million 18-24 years olds unemployed; it is
fffffff fantasy land. Playing games for tough headlines.

You only get examined by a proper doctor if you insist.

The Tory press will back it, but the disabled and young mums who are prejudiced by it should kick up a stink.

If the government had jobs to give people it might just be rational.

Tories and principal together? Is that like ferrets and rabbits? (dont think about it girls)
Will a Liberal resign over the Bill? Dont hold your breath. (Maybe just a councillor)

Cameron would die of natural causes befor it ALL was enacted. (slow burn, fire goes out) "Gabby"

budugs · 17/02/2011 18:47

budugs · 17/02/2011 19:07

torys seem to have the answer, sell the jobs to the highest bidder.

www.newstatesman.com/blogs/the-staggers/2011/02/hedge-funds-party-banks

everyone start saving to get their kids an intership.

meditrina · 17/02/2011 19:17

Just seen on the Channel 4 News that the proposal that HB would be cut for long term unemployed has been dropped.

Which 6 benefits are being rolled into the UC?

adamschic · 17/02/2011 19:27

bedugs, you should come to my area, it's swarming with them. Not just in hospitality but in the supermarkets, shops. A few are getting pregnant and being housed etc with the intention of making their life here.

budugs · 17/02/2011 19:39

adamschic "swarming with them" do you mean flies, wasps or perhaps bees.

don,t you just hate the pesks little ceatures move into your loft without so much as a by or leave breed like rabbits you know, or do i mean insects.

this thread surley is diverse from benefits to nature in just one post.

sorry adamschic do have understand where your comming from but please they are people.

adamschic · 17/02/2011 21:41

No need to take it like that. Most restaurants, pubs and shops, in my area, are employing eastern europeans. Employers prefer them to locals as they are over here to work and earn money and are willing to do any hours requested. Whereas locals are unreliable.

I do wonder if this will be addressed once the welfare reform comes into place with businesses being told to employ british workers before europeans.

adamschic · 17/02/2011 21:47

Just thought I would add that whilst I am not a business owner I worked for a largish hospitality employer for several years who often offered positions to people from abroad before they had travelled over. I don't blame them, many were highly educated and professional. However, it is quite unique for us to order lunch and a drink and be served by a someone with an english accent.

Think I should shut up as I sound unpleasant, really am not, just stating a fact. I do live in a predominately tourist area.

ambarth · 18/02/2011 07:41

A lot of people don't employ locals because they can't exploit them the way the do the migrant workers.

georgeorwell · 18/02/2011 08:47

adamschic you are an idiot. i'd employ a johnny foreigner over an idigenous ignoramus like you any day.

oh and the british are also europeans dontcha know.

and how dare they get pregnant and make a life for themselves "over here". personally, i'd stick them in concentration camps to be let out only to skivvy for peanuts and sterilise them.

noddyholder · 18/02/2011 08:52

I abhor the tories and what they are doing. But what I can never understand is how a lot of the polish/czech builders I have used over the years have not necessarily been cheaper but they don't demand cash give all the receipts and do the job thoroughly and to a good standard without disappearing for hours on end and getting nasty when challenged.I have been ripped off by uk builders too.I know this is not all btw I have a brilliant electrician and plumber and they are mortified by some of the attitudes they see themselves and both are using foreign labourers as they are too sick of the attitude of some of the british guys.I would love to employ local but it is very hard when they charge a fortune and want cash!

Chil1234 · 18/02/2011 09:22

"people are very rarely motivated by money"

I think that's a naive view because money is a very important part of the equation. You don't have to look too far around these boards before you find someone who says 'it's not worth me going back to work'. Which means they've done the maths and worked out that they are better off financially by not working - either because of child-care costs or because the benefits lost won't be made up by the salary gained.

The Welfare State was built on the assumption that people were motivated more by the idea of being independent i.e. being in any kind of work, than they were by the money. This has been proved to be untrue in too many cases.

adamschic · 18/02/2011 09:31

George, I used to work in the industry that employed 'eastern europeans' I don't know if you read what I said which was that I didn't blame my previous employers because they got hard working, educated and reliable employees.

They have every right to make Britain their home if they so wish. I never said anything to the contrary.

It's you that's an idiot and an ignorant one at that so do f--k off and that's the first time I've said that to anyone in 5 years of posting on mumsnet. But am happy to say it to someone who comes onto a thread to make a personal attack and doesn't even have the brains to read what I said. (Hiding thread now)

georgeorwell · 18/02/2011 09:49

yah boo sucks! at least there's more space in the playground now.
