Did anyone see this?

I have just watched it and thought there might be a thread here about it. Sadly I am not surprised that it happens but I am still surprised by the statistics.

(Going to get dc from school so might not be on here until later.)

Appletrees no-one has implied that bright children should go to sec moderns to improve life for the others. It's not what I think, or anyone I can see on this thread?

Also I have to question MillyR's view that 'out of sight, out of mind' is a good thing?

Do you mean it is good that clever children don't have to understand that there are less able children, or that less able children shouldn't see the achievements of the brightest children?

Because it seems clear to me that it benefits both ends of the spectrum to know all kinds of peers, just as it is for adults. I like to watch University Challenge (and feel thick) and see people working in low-status jobs and thank God for what I have.

Would you prefer children not realise there's a spectrum of ability? Hmm the thought is genuinely making me quite angry!

Appletrees.

Schools are in a shite place right now because Labour put them there. Rubbish, a lot of schools were Victorian wrecks because the Tories did nothing in 18 years to improve them, in fact they got worse. Labour put "Building schools for the future in place" and the Tories have now cancelled it.

Labour made mistakes, the academies for a start.

For this reason we are killing ourselves to go private.

No this is because your an elitist who thinks her children are far to precious to mix with the hoi poloi.

TapselteerieO · 30/01/2011 00:02

Clearly this is a thread in education about grammar schools and private education? Why is it not in the education topic?

I think this thread is about why working class children don't run Britain

And the reason they don't run Britain is IMO because the state education system is fairly dire. My SIL's ghastly comp teaches a whole load of drossy unacademic subjects which would not qualify any child aiming for a halfway decent university, with the simple aim of improving their scores on the 5 GCSE A-C metric. Her school doesn't have a functioning music department, they don't teach Latin, they don't (effectively) teach modern foreign languages, and the subjects they do teach are not taught to a high standard. So what chance does a bright child have in that environment? Really?

It's an absolute scandal IMO. I don't think that academy status will help it - it's already a sports academy. On the English Bacc scale of achievement, it got 1% of 5 A-C passes. And I don't believe this school is unusual, I believe this is the norm in the comprehensive school environment.

Appletrees · 30/01/2011 00:18

they go here to get a better education

social mobility is in stasis

because of educatin

money was thrown t it and utterly wasted

Appletrees · 30/01/2011 00:20

phooey it is most definitely implied

that sate schools are badbecause the best are creamed off?

what's the problem with grammars then?

why does anyone mind them

newwave · 30/01/2011 00:35

Grammars are elitist, it's telling those who fail the 11 plus that they are worth less than those who pass. Plus it is unfair because Grammars have better facilities and smaller class sizes.

Two Sons, both went to State schools, (comps).

One passed 10 x GCSE, One passed 11

Both got 3 x A at A level (both got maths A)

Both went/are at good Universities.

Who needs, grammars or Public schools?.

mathanxiety · 30/01/2011 00:36

Hoggsback, excellent post back there. Nobody is more obsessed with privilege than the citizens of the former Soviet Union and the present day People's Republic of China.

What is wrong with a country where the height of ambition and the measure of a school system is the number of politicians certain types of school produce?

mathanxiety · 30/01/2011 00:41

And where are the public school girls I'd like to know?

claig · 30/01/2011 00:46

In the Labour party?

newwave · 30/01/2011 00:52

In the Labour party? yeah but not as many as in the "nasty party"

claig · 30/01/2011 00:54

Yes the Socialist Workers' Party is stuffed full of them

claig · 30/01/2011 00:55

Maggie Thatcher was a grammar school girl, Harriet Harman went to St. Paul's

Appletrees · 30/01/2011 00:56

it doesn't matter what it tells them if the schools they go to are good enough

newwave · 30/01/2011 00:59

Thatcher was a cold hearted unfeeling bitch who should have been burnt at the stake.

Appletrees · 30/01/2011 01:01

and tony blair was worse

claig · 30/01/2011 01:02

that is the voice of the bitter, illiberal, intolerant, vindictive, persecutory left wing. I'm surprised you left out the gulag.

Appletrees · 30/01/2011 01:04

lol not me

claig · 30/01/2011 01:05

no, newwave

newwave · 30/01/2011 01:10

If I saw a cockroach in my home I would kill it, Thatcher comes under the same heading.

She may be your hero but I doubt the people who's lives and jobs she destroyed think so. I was an onlooker and i was appaled as would have any decent, right thinking person with an ounce of compassion or human feeling.

claig · 30/01/2011 01:13

yes, I see, a rational, kind, caring, decent, warm-hearted, right thinking person like you

newwave · 30/01/2011 01:17

I would have opposed Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and Thathers mate Pinochet as well.

Evil must be opposed.

BaggedandTagged · 30/01/2011 01:57

PMSL- go on a visit to Tuol Sleng and then tell me you put Thatcher in the same category as Pol Pot

.....or alternatively, take the money you went have spent on the plane ticket, and buy yourself some perspective.

BuntingHill · 30/01/2011 10:07

Silly question re. public school girls...they are where they have always been married to your MPs, your farmers, your chartered surveyors, your solicitors etc. They are doing their bit for the country by supporting the MEN who are still running it and rearing their children! They are doing the catering for the dinner parties and drinks parties where business is really discussed.
