Lily Philips - can she be a 'true' Christian?

https://www.premierchristianity.com/opinion/lily-phillips-has-been-baptised-i-pray-its-accompanied-by-change/20772.article

This article made me think about what it means to be Christian especially about the concepts of sin, judgment and redemption.

In my view Lily of course is a Christian being baptised but to not give up a lucrative adult film career possibly does cause angst amongst more traditional Christians.

We are taught not to judge 'Let those without sin cast the first stone' and to accept the universal unconditionally of forgiveness. (We pray every day about the forgiveness of sin) so it is difficult thologically to condemn others.

However does any fellow Christian need to remind Lily she makes money from a profession where many women with less choice are coerced and manipulated for thr gratification of men? Wr have moved away from a less judgmental Christianity but how do you view participation in Christian life with such a job?

LP Baptism

Lily Phillips has been baptised. I pray it's accompanied by change

The baptism of a pornographic actress has caused controversy, but the real question isn't whether Lily Phillips' sins are too great for God's grace - it's whether she truly understands what repentance means, says Lois McLatchie-Miller

TBH, it's not something I have put much thought into. To me, from an evolutionary point of view, incest is wrong. And from my moral view also, because of power dynamics.

Beyond that, I have never wondered about two brothers getting married.

@RedTagAlan

To me, from an evolutionary point of view, incest is wrong

But from a purely evolutionary point of view, only reproductive incest could be wrong. Incest that does not result in childbirth would be okay.

It seems to me that if a person's objection to incest is solely based on the possibility of genetic defects in offspring, then all forms of non-procreative incest should be allowable. So that would be all forms of same-sex incest, as well as heterosexual incest that isn't penis-in-vagina sex. Personally, I'd also include penis-in-vagina sex in which the heterosexual couple is taking precaution with birth control; it's true that birth control isn't 100% effective, but it's efficacy rate is still very high, so any pregnancies would be very much anomalies, rather than the norm. If the couple takes adequate steps to try to prevent a pregnancy, then they don't deserve to be penalised, in my view. (Again, this is solely in relation to the evolutionary/genetic objection.)

So I tend to think that anyone who objects to any and all forms of incest on evolutional/genetic grounds alone is not viewing the subject in a nuanced way, because they are objecting to numerous forms of incest that would not present any evolutionary or genetic problems whatsoever.

It's a different situation with you, as you say you also have moral quibbles with it. But for those for whom it's just a matter of genetic worries - it seems a bit short-sighted to oppose any form of incest.

So you are a Pagan, and you are saying incest is (sometimes) ok.

I think that puts you over there in the OT Christians corner. I won't be joining you.

Toodle-pip.

@RedTagAlan

Just because I happen to have the view that a number of forms of incest are harmless, I don't see how that puts me right in with Old Testament Christians. I'm strikingly different from them (in terms of beliefs) in a large number of ways; having one area in which there is perhaps some agreement or common ground hardly means that I'm just like them generally!

@Parker231

Christian believers might disappear, but that won't leave just atheists in the world. Polytheists like myself would still be here.

Bugger. Where is my Bible...

Justmerach ... wait for me.

Jos 10:12 Then Joshua speaks to YHWH in the day of YHWH's giving up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, and he says before the eyes of Israel, "Sunstand still in Gibeon; and moonin the Valley of Ajalon"; (LSV)

Stop the earth, I want to get off.

The physics needed for that verse are interesting by the way.

@RedTagAlan

What does that passage have to do with my comment?

(As I'm not a Christian, that's not a part of my belief system, anyway.) I was responding to Parker in a hypothetical, theoretical sense, because they implied that if Christians vacated the world due to the Rapture, that would leave only atheists in the world.

But that wouldn't be the case. There are plenty of non-Christian theists.

Yes. I am aware of that. Are we not allowed a bit of humour here ?

It's not always easy or possible to tell if someone is using humour as opposed to being serious.

Perhaps it’s happening tonight under the guise of the solar eclipse!

Well nothing happened - typical were in France for the month and thought I’d see these end times before we fly home where they didn’t have the eclipse.
You’d think this clever god would send out an email letting us know when we could watch this end times show!

Flat earthers have fun explaining an eclipse. Incidentally, many flat eathers are flat earthers because "Bible".

I can't remember their reasoning, but often they are Young Earth Creationists too. Something to do with Noah works better on a flat earth model than on a globe.

The Bible tells us to watch and wait and it seems to suggest not pray for these things to happen, although some Christians may do but I don't.
I have said it will be sad the end of times, but I was speaking about the rapture when I said it will a sight to behold. I guess it may be terrifying at the same time..

(Matthew 24:42)
"Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come".

Why will end times be sad and rapture a sight to behold - I thought these were things Christians wanted?

I wonder if the whore of Babylon is doing only fans at the moment. Not only will she giving birth to prostitutes or women of easy virtue but also to abominations. You think Satan would be giving birth to psychopathic murderers and rapists rather than some poor drug addicted women giving blow jobs for a fiver to support her kids.

If you are watching the news you'll see His Satanic Majesty was quite busy creating many such people some time ago -

24 years ago - Ryan Sutton - rape of 10 year-old
32 years ago Ryan Dinnage - one count of rape of woman in caravan
40 years ago - Simon Levy - 2 counts of murder, 1 of rape

all sentenced this week.

Loads more if you care to look.....

I see this as an issue with Christianity. Not the crimes but attributing the crimes to an entity called Satan.

You hear it all the time. He is just plain evil. Nothing can be done with evil like that. What demon has possessed this person.

It does nothing for tackling the root reasons for the crime. What social factor played a part etc. Just declare it to be the work of Satan,

The scorpion-tailed locust demons with human faces and lion's teeth are going to cause comment, certainly.

I'm personally waiting for the seven-headed leopard-bear-lion to come out of the sea. Apparently it's going to call god hurty words.

Given the subject of your post content I did not take it as satire no.

Were you not attributing rapes to Satan ? I would have thought rape was not a good subject for satire.

I was on another forum and a thread there was about end times. There was one person who posted who was not a Christian and they seemed to start saying goodbye in it. I had been in discussions with them at times and got to know them only from their posts. Reading that made me start thinking more that people who you know and lived with and just the world...they will be split up and being a Christian doesn't automatically you a better person that a person with no faith who good values and keeps to it so it makes it quite sad.

I ended up writing the Rapture if as described it seems visually something to see/behold just by sight and perhaps terrifying to that the end may be closer than it was. This would be more a wake up call, although it is excepted.

Why would someone be saying goodbye? If Christians want to live somewhere else - up to them but where’s the evidence this is possible? Still don’t understand why anyone would be sad? I’m staying where I am with family and friends - life is good.

Nor do I understand why anyone would think the rapture is terrifying - you either believe in it or you don’t.

I don't know what they was thinking but the thread was titled "Do you think we are in end times" not started by myself. They could have been moved by some of the content of the thread.

In the Christian faith many Christians love God and some at the same time fear God. That isn't too dissimilar than seeing the rapture and thinking of it as a remembrance of God's power and the end times to come.

It’s a load of click bait nonsense, she just wants attention and views

When the views and attention (control) starts to wain, this is generally what happens to try and grab it back. Look at how many manosphere ‘influencers’ after some sort of scandal convert to Islam, by shielding themselves with a religion they hope to filter the negative press and rebrand themselves.

however that’s just my opinion. Maybe they really have found God. But also in my personal opinion if you were to profound spiritual awakening then I don’t think the first thing you would do would be put it on social media.

Amen.

My minister told me that God will decide who goes to heaven or new earth and I would agree with that. I assume she may mean Jesus will decide. Christians who are judged as believers it will be determined where they go according to New earth or heaven. If they are not judged as a believer the Bible says that their fate will be the same as a non believer. I did write before that I think that there could some exceptions and a so called bad Christian who had exceptions say with a condition that made it too difficult to understand the Bible I think God could possibly have some exception for them. I don't know for sure.
My minister is a reverend at an Anglican church where I attend a non denominational Christian.
Some Christian think eternal life can be lost, some think that they will get through to eternal life. Some think that they need to judged. Me, I am waiting to be witnessed at the end and I like it that way.

It’s as I posted earlier - Christian’s disappear somewhere (you don’t know what you’re going to?) and it frees up plenty of space down here on earth for the rest of us. I think I’m the winner - I’ll have certainty that my life will continue as normal but you’re agreeing to go into the unknown. It’s like an episode of Star Trek!

Except for all the disappointed Christians who don't get taken. Just imagine, a life of being pious and good so they go up, then they are left behind.

The pubs will be full of them making up for what they missed. It will be like an eternal Friday before Christmas an hour before chucking out time.

The stone circles will be full of left behind Christians holding orgies, and the agnostic dog walkers will be tripping over all sorts of entangled left behind Christians as they walk their charges along the Regents canal towpath...at noon.

And Lily Philips will find herself out of work as left behind Sunday School Teachers take to Only Friends to earn a few bob to fund a trip to the Vegas casinos.

That is my attempt at satire :-)

@Parker231

There is anecdotal evidence for an afterlife (not a specifically Christian afterlife, but an afterlife for all people - of all religions and none, theists and non-theists alike) from mediums who report experiences of contact with deceased spirits. There is anecdotal evidence from people who have report experiences out of their bodies whilst dying/being clinically dead.

There is also evidence in the form of experimental data from organisations such as the Society for Psychical Research, where credible researchers have been investigating psi phenomena since the 1800s.

I understand (and respect) the fact that you personally do not not view this evidence as reliable or credible. I don't expect or demand you to. But forms of evidence do exist for an afterlife, even if you think they are not credible forms of evidence.
