Atheists and proof

On several threads, some atheists have said they would believe in God/the Divine if they had proof. If you’re an atheist what would that proof look like to you?

‘Interesting first post’, as is quite often said on here. Unless you’re a sock of course…

I see you can give it out but can’t receive it back lol

@Itscatsallthewaydown ah sorry I missed your post. Can you define “snooty” and give examples of this and where I’ve dismissed other peoples posts? tIA

And what element of my thought do you think has not gone through a critical thinking process?

I did not mean you personally, but many believers including on this thread.

Not really, no. I posted that a couple of days ago and I’m not particularly interested in revisiting stuff. I’m sure you can reread your posts to find a few examples though.

Ah so you make accusations you can’t back up. I see! Lol

I would say that’s true of both sides of this debate though. I think it’s a human failing rather than one linked to belief system

We know that. This whole thread is a wind-up.

Not something I think about normally but why do some people need a faith and others don’t?

Neither make you a better person or mean you are more moral, more fulfilled life, better quality of life etc.

I think we’ve exhausted the idea I don’t think scientific proof is relevant when it comes to spirituality.

Therefore what are you looking for when you talk about backing up claims?

This thread has really run into the weeds and has become disagreeable and a bit boring. It’s a shame as it’s an interesting topic.

What does it come down to: Is it rational to believe things in the absence of supporting evidence? The answer to that is no.

Religious people are free to believe whatever they like. Discussions with them about the nature of reality go nowhere though. They cannot substantiate their claims so they try to say that knowledge of divinity is outside the realms of science. But this is circular because any demand to substantiate this is met with the response that you cannot, exactly because it is outside the realm of science!

Different language games. But only one side of this is rational and credible.

Well if you’re finding it boring, I guess there’s no need to participate.

I disagree with your summary. Interesting that you present it as the only outcome.

Put together, your post appears to be trying to shut down the debate. Why is that?

(Sigh). I’m not trying to shut down anything (how could I, anyway?).

You’ve come back to my observation with a peevish response which I think illustrates the problem I was talking about, of how discussions with religious people tends to run into these bunkers.

Many people are open to being persuaded but they will not believe claims without evidence.

But, I’m not a religious person.

What are your views on the position that scientific style evidence is not possible on spiritual matters?

It's a bit like living in a Deist universe, with @Kdtym10 as the disinterested observer god.....

*Acornsoup
@BabaBarrio you absolutely can

No you can’t. Don’t be silly. If you are going to call yourself a scientist, you have to commit to following the scientific method and process. You cannot do science with no hypothesis, with no controlled experiment, with no measurable observations, etc.

Even children doing a science project have to commit to a scientific process to execute it.*

Absolute codswallop - science exists with or without parameters.
