I'm not saying that it is possible to drop all responsibility and aspects of modern life, we all have our own challenges. I think I didn't articulate myself well. I guess what I was trying to ask was how to keep those little everyday magic things when you start to wobble, when it seems everything is stacked against you in trying times. Both yourself @speakout and @EmmaEmerald have raised a valid point to me which I appreciate: step back, breathe and reconnect with whatever little thing I am doing to have a moment's magic. And changing my perspective, I have a tendency to slide into darkness, I need to create some light for myself. Thank you both

EmmaEmerald · 26/09/2023 08:05

I'd just like to clarify that I said "as free of obligation as possible" - stress and responsibility can't be avoided unless you are born into a huge amount of money I think, and possibly even then.

I once overheard my mother and sister saying I should stop offering to help others (oh the irony). The reason for their chat was I had just offered to help a neighbour with probate for her DH, and I had an elderly neighbour for whom I did shopping and prescriptions. But the help you offer is very different to the things you feel obligated to do!

At the moment, I won't be offering any help as I simply cannot cope and need to recover.

My father served on many charity committees and when he began to find it a burden, it was hard to drop because no one knew what to do without him. A couple of them did actually close.

So I am careful what I take on.

In terms of simplicity, I still own CDs, books and DVDs, I just find it less faff than screens and constantly fiddling with tech. Some people love tech of course, and I am deeply grateful for the noise cancelling headphones that will get me through two long Tube journeys shortly!

EmmaEmerald · 26/09/2023 08:09

TenBlackRoses · 26/09/2023 07:04

@EmmaEmerald thank you for your perspective. Some of your situations sound very similar to mine. I like the idea of little rituals, I will look into this and try to incorporate them into daily life once things are more settled (currently renovating his parents house to move into next month, whilst juggling work and animals, time is scarce and stress is plentiful!) Dropping some aspects of modern life to embrace things from a simpler time may be a habit to build going forward.

I take a moment to tap the singing bowl a few times, and atm wave a white sage incense stick around once a day.

I have a lot of stuff to sort in my new home and have a little chat with my spirits/guides etc, or just make the odd remark to them as I go along.

I'm really enjoying the fact the altar space is just there, and looks fab, and is a constant thing, so to speak.

speakout · 26/09/2023 08:14

TenBlackRoses have you tried meditation? I know it isn't for everyone, but there are some wonderful guided meditation youtube videos - some only 5 minutes long. I use them most days, especially when I notice my anxiety levels are high or my mood is low.
Learning to be observant of our thoughts and feelings means we can take early intervention.
I have lots of "magical" items placed around my home to make sure it is easy to slip in some enchanted juice into my day.
I keep magical tea blends along side my regular coffee, I keep essential oils beside my shower to sprinkle at my feet to give me an oomph or calm me.
candles and incense are always to hand, magical waters kept beside the washing machine, my grimoire and journal kept at the side of my favourite chair.
I listen to chants, affiirmations and music while i work, and I slow down when I a feeling rushed. We don't get things done faster when we hurry, we only end up feeling frazzled as we dump cortisol and adrenaline into our bodies.
And of course my yoga practice which allows me access to my body and mind energies, and those of the sky and earth.

TenBlackRoses, I echo Speakout's wise* *words.

Emma, I agree, sometimes you don't expres yourself well. What is your intention when you tap the singing bowl and wave a white sage stick around?

Will and intention form so many of our actions.

EmmaEmerald · 26/09/2023 15:22

BlankTimes " I agree, sometimes you don't expres yourself well"

sometimes I am trying to be careful what I say. Especially as I realise many people have obligations they can't run away from and I don't wish to upset anyone.

but I was very clear and used the word "obligation", I didn't say "stress" or "responsibility".

of course everyone will have a different interpretation of what "obligation" means.

re the singing bowl and the incense stick, I do it to shift mood and energy. I only use white sage as I find I don't like the smell of most incense sticks.

I see myself as following a few personal rituals linked to Paganism rather than following a craft. I think I mentioned here before about starting a different type of thread but there'd be a lot of crossover I think?

speakout mentioned monks etc. If anyone is interested, I have mentioned this book before - Cave in the Snow by Vicki Mackenzie. It's about Tenzin Palmer, an English lady who lived in a cave as a Buddhist. I found it a fascinating read.

VioletCharlotte · 26/09/2023 18:31

"On an emotional level it helps to build up a strong place of inner calm and safety that we can rely on no matter the storms that blow."

This resonates with me @speakout. My yoga teacher was talking yesterday about the difference between things we can't control; other people, the weather, the economy, world affairs, etc) and things we can control; our diet, our breathing, sleep hygiene, taking time to meditate, how much exercise we get, what read... If we spend too much time worrying about things that are outside of our control it's futile we get stressed, we feel powerless and it's exhausting. However if we focus on the things we can control, we immediately feel more powerful, our physical and mental health improves and we become more resilient and able to cope with the things that are outside of our control.

Tenblackroses when you're feeling overwhelmed, take a few minutes to centre and just think about what's in your power to change. To me, being able to take control of your own feelings and emotions is a form of magic in itself as this is where real transformation can happen.

speakout · 26/09/2023 19:05

"To me, being able to take control of your own feelings and emotions is a form of magic in itself as this is where real transformation can happen."

I completely agree Violetcharlotte.
Our emotions need to be heard and recognised, but our inner child or shadow can't be allowed to run the show.
Yes complete magic in my view.

It has been a very dark day here, lots of pain, upset, I am left feeling sad, upset and so very tired.
I have managed to be a rock for myself and a family member who is going through a very bad time, but I am left exhausted.
If anyone is lighting a candle tonight please send some healing energy.

Thankyou for the powerful energy friends.
Although problems still remains to a large extent the trauma was resolved just before bed and calm prevailed. Which meant I was able to get a good deep sleep.

This is a powerful place, the energy that was sent to me was palpable and very real. It helped enormously.

I plan a quiet day of soothing calm energy after yesterday's storms.
My soft warm clothes, plenty tea, gentle music.
I have to work, but I will take that at a calm pace. My soul needs some nurturing after the storm.

I hope everyone finds some magic in the day.

Hello all.
Well after the stress of 4 weeks building work they left on Friday (still a couple of things to do, but waiting on items to be made) and I looked forward to Monday, a day alone in the house to reset and cleanse etc. Then my son was ill, so he has only gone back to school today. So we rested together, watched a film and snuggled.
He did the most wonderful thing on Friday that warmed my heart. I opened his lunch box from his day on the school farm and it was full of conkers (so I can try making detergent from them) and two turkey feathers (because I know you collect different kinds, Mummy!)

But I am just so weary at the moment. My new bathroom is lovely, but I need to find the energy to decorate it before we can move fittings etc back in. My old pine towel cupboard will no longer fit, so I need to find a new home for towels and a new home for the cupboard.
The new bath is shorter and well - it's just NOT my old bath so I am taking time to get used to it as it doesn't feel as comfortable.

Sending love and nurturing energy to you my dear @speakout

EmmaEmerald · 27/09/2023 09:54

speakout glad it got resolved. Hope you have a calm day.

queenrollo that stuff is so disruptive isn't it.

I am exhausted after two days running around. Going to be slow today.

HillsBesideTheSea · 27/09/2023 10:17

Hope you are able to adjust and love the new bathroom before too long queenrollo

Building work is rumbling on and more and more chaos keeps being thrown into the mix. A friend asked my why i was so angry yesterday, and helped me get to a point where i could laugh at the ridiculousness of it. Mostly my pain levels are stupid high and I am grumping my way through each issue as I have no reserves atm.

But i will be very happy when building work is done and things can go back to where they live. And when the remaining chaos is tamed.

EmmaEmerald I can't express things as well as speakout does but I have also been through serious mental illness and I feel that so many women are suffering mental ill health due to the constant societal criticism. We are never doing enough as daughters, mothers, partners, workers. It's very difficult to resist this narrative and I have now virtually given up Mumsnet because of the corrosive nature of constant comparison, competitiveness and discontent that comes through in almost every thread.

This group is different, truly supportive of women to be themselves, rejecting stereotypes and demonstrating that we are stronger together. It has helped me to read all the threads, so much kindness, understanding and wisdom generously shared.

It's seven years since my hospital admission with severe psychotic depression and I have just been discharged from the mental health team. Seven years of slowly recovering myself to the point where I can look in the mirror and say "I am enough".

I hope this thread helps you in your recovery. You are enough too.

Sorry to quote the whole post…I’m a bit behind with reading…

@KateF I’m so sorry you’ve been through such an ordeal.

I totally agree about MN….I find it so upsetting a lot of the time and I often only post to support an unsuspecting OP and to tell them that they don’t need to ask permission on here. It’s such a harsh place. When I’m exhausted though I find MN easier to read than a book. I try to stick to this thread and style and beauty bit I get sucked in by the trending topics nearly every day!

EmmaEmerald · 29/09/2023 10:48

A full moon day, hope there's a clear sky tonight so I can go out and see it.

Hope everyone is doing okay.

TenBlackRoses · 29/09/2023 18:20

I'm hoping to go out for a walk tonight and enjoy some of the moonlight (harvest moon, I think?) Have been struggling a bit with things lately, and feel like a walk with the moon for company will be a balm. Fingers crossed it stays clear! Had a new little necklace delivered today of amethyst, obsidian, tourmaline, onyx and haematite (sounds a lot, but it's dainty!), so hoping that can charge up with the moon, and my usual moonstone. Hope everyone is doing ok

Hedjwitch · 29/09/2023 19:10

Collected fallen rowan twigs brought down by the wind and tied them.into protective crosses with red thread. They are in the greenhouse to absorb the moonlight tonight. They are too lightweight to leave out on the grass.
My crystals have been washed in rain water and left out near the herbs to charge up.
Tomorrow a sea swim to cleanse and invigorate.
Moon blessings,sisters

Craftycorvid · 29/09/2023 19:12

Wonderful full moon energies, all! Wishing you well.

Mr C is home. Healing is ongoing and it’s a work in progress figuring out a new routine, but we are working on it. 🙂

HillsBesideTheSea · 29/09/2023 19:39

Glad to here Mr C is home.

Wishing you all a gentle weekend.

EmmaEmerald · 29/09/2023 20:03

Glad Mr C is home

Ten, your necklace sounds amazing. I love a delicate necklace. A moonlight walk sounds lovely.

I’m always confused about the trajectory of the moon at different times. I’m imagining I will be able to see it from the communal garden. My flat faces one way but the garden faces the three ways my flat doesn’t, lol! I don’t know what time it will be visible. Last one climbed above the surrounding trees about 9.15.

HillsBesideTheSea · 29/09/2023 20:11

There was an app that i was recommended a while back which showed you the position of not only the moon but also the planets in the sky. I have not a scoobie what the app was, but there are smart people who actually like tech on the thread and maybe someone will be able to recommend one so that you can figure out the best viewing points Emma
