I went in being completely open minded. I don't need to think I believe it or not. I'm glad I went and it was a great show.

She was fantastic. 2hrs live show. No breaks.

Would love to know of others experiences.

The cynic in me, says she should could get all from Facebook .... linked in etc .. it's all there to see.

The non cynic, she new exact names, exact circumstances etc

Would love to know others thoughts.

It’s incredible what mentalists like Derren Brown can glean just from cold reading, but there are other techniques which feed into this stuff. I don’t believe any of it is real at all, just some that are able to be more convincing than others.

Scientist here, I think it's all nonsense.

I’m not a scientist and I also think it’s all nonsense.

In Hereford everyone knows everyone.

It's a tiny town. She wasn't a medium. She got lucky.

Slig · 23/11/2022 22:55

When my mum died (I was very young), I went to a few of these charlatans as I missed my mum so badly.

They easily guessed she'd died of breast cancer but as I went to more and more, I became more cynical and gave less away.

I would leave baffled.. why would my mum tell me what house number I lived in or my middle name? It was just nonsense.

My mum loved me more than life itself, and there is no way in the 30 years she's been dead that if she could, she would have got a message to me.

The people prey on the vulnerable,

You were had.

@Pumperthepumper

Well maybe but it was an interesting hour so it was worth it to me.

toffeecrisps · 24/11/2022 09:45

They're scam artists and should be banned.

America12 · 24/11/2022 09:50

@Pumperthepumper not full names no but how to 'guess' first names ?
Eg 'your dads name is , your sister's name is , this is your job' (exact job)
It was free.

It’s really easy. You cast first, ie ‘I’m getting a J?’ and note the people who twitch an eyebrow or a cheek. Then you guess their age - if they’re 30ish, likely to have a grandparent called Jane, Jean, John, James, Jack and so on. So you keep casting out until someone bites.

And think about it, if she could tell you their first names and their exact job, why not their surnames?

Feef83 · 24/11/2022 12:52

No Op, you most certainly didn’t “go in with an open mind”

You had spent money on the tickets, you bothered to travel there and spend your evening at the event.

Clearly you were very “open” in the sense that this is a good thing

Feef83 · 24/11/2022 12:55

From a ten second AS

i know you own a Yorkshire Terrier; you have children at school age; you or a close family member has or had an alcohol problem; you recently flew business class

and that was a few seconds

Beamur · 24/11/2022 12:56

I've seen Derren Brown show exactly what a medium does whilst clearly stating he's not a medium.
It's a con.
After my friends Mum died, she went to see a medium. The person assured her that none of her sisters or her would get cancer (Mum died of breast cancer) fast forward a few years. Two of of three sisters have cancer.
They really are the lowest form of tricksters.

Honestly, because you can tell a lot about someone just by looking at them, hearing them speak, and the fact that they’ve paid to attend this kind of event.

SirChenjins · 24/11/2022 17:39

We didn’t pay to attend the spiritualist church I talked about in my earlier post - and if the person doesn’t hear you speak, but instead asks if you are happy to take the message and then proceeds to tell you things that only you would know about your childhood, how does that work? I’m genuinely curious.

Newcatbrowntail · 24/11/2022 17:43

I overheard a psychic consultation. It was a complete fishing trip. But I have no doubt that the customer was satisfied with the experience as it was like a therapy session.

SirChenjins · 24/11/2022 17:50

If there’s any fishing then absolutely, it’s a scam - but when there’s literally none I’d love to know how they do it.

Amdone123 · 24/11/2022 18:00

@SirChenjins , there's a lot of good stuff on you tube showing how they do it. Holy Koolaid is good, but I love Miklos Jakko so have a look at him ( especially his session with James Van Pragh).
I was reading about Houdini the other day and I think I have a way to put this argument to bed once and for all. Decide with your loved ones a password. Then, when 1 of you dies and the other visits a medium who will claim to have your partner there, ask for the password.
Simple !

What did he tell you?

Happyinheels · 24/11/2022 18:10

I was an absolute sceptic, not even a sceptic just an out and out 'this is a load of crap' kind of person. Anyway a work colleague of mine was telling me she had an appointment the next day with a medium. She'd been before and shared some of what she had been told. I said I didn't believe in all that kind of stuff. She had been going with a friend but the friend couldn't go at the last minute and she offered me the ticket. Part of me was curious so I went. I went with the attitude of 'you're not getting anything out of me, no clues, nothing' 🤣 When I walked in all the lady asked was for my first name. And that was it. I thought she was talking to me then realised she was talking to 'someone' in the room. She said 'hi X, what have I told you about not wearing anything on your feet?'' Turned to me and said 'eee what's she like?' X was my mums name, she never wore shoes, wouldn't wear slippers, had terrible feet and ended up getting a cut in her foot which got infected and long story short led to her dying. She then said 'where's X? Oh he's on his way is he?' This second X was my dads name. And it went from there. There was absolutely no way she knew anything about me. She was expecting my colleagues friend, not me. She mentioned people by name, including my son. She mentioned incidents that were deeply personal to me, oh so many things to mention. It honestly blew my mind. At the very end she asked me if I had any questions. So I said yes, can you ask my mum if she's seen my grandad. She responded and said 'no, he's in a different place. And what he did to you was unforgivable.' You could say that was a tenuous answer if you're trying to pick a hole? But no it really wasn't at all.
I can only share my experience. There were too many specifics to be coincidental.

Roselilly36 · 24/11/2022 18:10

I can only speak from my experience, I have seen a medium at a spiritualist church on a couple of occasions, I have found it helpful. DH is a big skeptic, came along to prove it wrong, left a believer. But as with all things, good and bad in everything. Believe or not, makes no difference to me.

First name would have been enough for someone in the background to search for you on social media.
