Hagstones make great pendants. I've often worn one on a chain around my wrist too. The last couple I've made into pendulums.

Which reminds me - I need to grab a handful to take with me to the workshop tonight.

Finding them is largely dependent on looking on the right beaches or rivers. You need flint beaches like Dungerness or limestone ones. You can also find them on gravel drives where the stones have come from the coast but some hardcore witches would say that as you haven't picked them from the water they don't really count!

hilariousnamehere · 02/08/2022 22:56

Ooh totally missed new thread - wondered why the other one had gone quiet and didn't think to go in and look 😂 the heat has added my brain, I think!

Hello all - I have chocolate cake and ice pops, take your pick depending on preference and temperature. And can we make the fire a cold one?!

Off to catch up with all your posts, my news is fairly specific, just that I am currently the definition of "featherbrained" - I've been on a feather collecting frenzy for the last week or two, propelled by instinct more than knowing what I'm going to do with them, but it's felt like a compulsion in a good way. I think it's wearing off now I have a big box full, so next step is to clean them (without shrinking them like the first batch 😳). But I've been dreaming of feathers and seeing the most unlikely things pretending to be feathers, so running with it until I figure out what artistry/magic/both is fuelling the obsession!

Some will be for my altar - the jay and prettiest magpie feathers, and a few other magical ones, and the rest are destined for making wings for a future photo project.

hilariousnamehere · 02/08/2022 23:26

Ahhh, these threads and you lovely lot are a breath of calm in the insanity that is modern life (maybe just my life?!)

Welcome fabulous new humans! You've found the best corner of the whole internet :) And @GaeasDaughter what was your previous username if you're happy to share? Don't feel you have to though, and sorry if I've missed you already saying! Made me think that I still have friends from the early 00s who I know well in real life now but we primarily refer to each other as our first forum usernames 😂

Re hagstones, my mum regularly finds them with her pebble hunting club, her record is 17 in one day and I always tease her that she thinks she's Catholic but actually my witchy tendencies are clearly a mashup of Dad's Celtic origins and her hagstone affinity 😁 it's lovely to be able to be open about it with her, it wasn't always that way and I'm still a bit wary around some of my extended family - they're not exactly religious and not really practising, but would definitely all class themselves as Christians, and one aunt and uncle do loads with their local church. If I can find the photo of the enormous hagstone mum found me for my garden I will attach it :)

Love the creative musings and bugger the rules @speakout well said and so true. I'm currently helping a friend get to grips with photography, which she wants to learn and turn into a career, and that drive has come partly from learning that I have no formal photography training but it's my main work now 💙 without going off on my usual feminist rant, photography is dogged by very traditional male views and there are a few of us speaking up and making women professionals more visible - and it's always really interesting to hear the differences between male and female talks at big shows. Although there is of course much to be learned from both, the delivery and the focus is different and I think that carries through into magic in all its guises, and probably a lot of other things in life too.

Also struggle with "arty" and prefer "creative" although that took me a long time to embrace and accept, as did "photographer". I'm now trying to get my head around calling myself an artist - even though I firmly believe that we are all artists in our own ways, and our art takes different forms. Hmmm.

My practice is totally informal and both woven into my everyday and a bit intermittent, in the sense that some things are so second nature I almost forget they're magical until someone notices or asks. But definitely more of the everyday magic for me. Love reading about everyone's differing approaches.

Ok, time for bed - @EmmaH2022 my current favourite book is Hedge Witch by Rae Beth but as the others have said (and my inner ex-librarian concurs), lots of it is about figuring out what you like best. If you have a Kindle or the app, downloading a few of the samples can be a good way to start hunting for the authors and titles and areas which call to you most; or head to your local library (London is full of truly epic libraries, including Barbican which used to have a really good selection fifteen or so years ago) and see what's there - I can find the Dewey numbers to look for if that's useful :)

Sleep well, sisters!

hilariousnamehere · 02/08/2022 23:41

Please excuse terrible snapshots - favourite feathers and one of my enormous hagstones - it's bigger than my hand!

@Elphame loved your photo - I am inspired to do something more interesting with my smaller ones than just string them by my doors.

Elphame · 03/08/2022 12:43

@hilariousnamehere Wow that is one huge hagstone! I hang one on red thread from my rear view mirror as a car protection charm. I don't think I use that one though. One emergency stop and it would take out the windscreen

The workshop last night went well but I'm really tired today. Getting too old to stay out to 1am any more it seems.

I have a list of things to do but it seems playing on FB and mumsnet is what is actually happening. Although I have just sorted out a problem with the bins at the holiday let so not entirely unproductive!

Fashiontatts · 03/08/2022 16:26

Wow @hilariousnamehere that's a huge hagstone!

Glad to hear you had a good workshop @Elphame 🙂

I feel very blessed today.... We recently moved to a new area and today I discovered that there is a wonderful magick shop only a few villages over! Very much looking forward to visiting when time allows.

My husband is working on a nightshift tonight, so I've planned some nice veggie food for myself, some skincare with my v much loved jade face roller and I have a new candle to burn, once I have the little ones settled.

GaeasDaughter · 04/08/2022 00:47

@Retsina24 valerian is a good one, or clary sage, lavender, chamomile and bergamot orange. I usually just use a lavender essential oil on my temples and wrists and it calms me down quite a bit but lavender has always helped me a lot, it might be best to try a couple and see what your DS prefers. Remember to use a carrier oil if you’re going to be using it on the body

@speakout you’re right that a lot of women. I’d like to think I have a bit of flare for decorating, and gardening. I used to be good at cross stitch but the medication I’m on now makes me shake so I don’t trust myself with needles anymore😂

@Fashiontatts you definitely sound very in tune, your baking sounds delicious. I’m due late September, so not long to go now at all. I’m planning a home birth so I’m going to set up a birthing alter and keep my crystals and essential oils close. Your DC definitely have special birthdays!

@HillsBesideTheSea your body definitely needed all that sleep, I hope you’ve managed to have lots of caffeine and food

@EmmaH2022 a trip to Alnwick sounds brilliant, I love Northumberland

@hilariousnamehere feather collecting sound wonderful I might add that to my list of things to do with the Dc. And my old name was mothernaturesdaughter😊. That hag stone is amazing

I’ve been feeling quite unwell. I woke up last night and was very sick and have slept most of today. I’m eating plain biscuits and drinking lots of fluids so hopefully I’ll be right as rain soon.

Fashiontatts · 04/08/2022 06:34

@GaeasDaughter oh I hope you're feeling better soon. Horrible when you're feeling out of sorts when you're so pregnant. The fluids and rest will be doing you the world of good... hopefully the illness is short lived.

Not long to go at all for you... A home birth sounds wonderful - nice and calm in your own environment, letting nature take its course!... (def would have been my preference if it had been feasible!)
Your birthing alter will be a great help and source of strength and comfort!

Yeah both of mine have quite significant birth dates - and it wasn't either of their "predicted due dates"; they just knew when they wanted to arrive. I always think that babies know when it's their time to come and meet you 🙂

Trenzalor · 04/08/2022 12:30

I went to Glastonbury yesterday and whilst I always enjoy being there, it feels it has lost some of its vibrancy and power of late. I had intended to visit the chalice well but it absolutely poured with rain and I didn’t fancy dragging the children around in the rain. Instead we ate, browsed and met some lovely shopkeepers. Of course, I had to go to Starchild and get a few pieces.

Trenzalor · 04/08/2022 12:32

Oh and I’ve order the Oak Ash and Thorn tarot deck - I don’t know if anyone else has used this one but it’s beautiful. There are three decks I’ve had on my wish list for ages, but this is the only UK one and I’m not paying US shipping and customs!

Any Witches Here?- Part 17.
queenrollo · 04/08/2022 20:13

@Trenzalor I have to say I always feel a bit of an anti-climax when I go to Glastonbury. Partly it is because I always have DH and DS with me and don't feel I can fully browse, but often I feel the energy there is a little off-kilter. Every time we have gone we had encounters with drunk/drugged up people.
It's one of those places I always want to have a deep connection to but never seem to enjoy it as much as I anticipate.
I have a friend who lives in the town itself and they said the novelty of living there soon wears off, especially if you are not very spiritually inclined.

I'm so tired and run down at the moment and I don't know why. I am not being particularly taxed. We are going on holiday soon, and I sometimes get terribly homesick. I feel very rooted at home at the moment and resentful of being pulled away. This is unlike me - I usually look forward to the chance to catch up with family or friends.

VioletCharlotte · 04/08/2022 21:07

Glastonbury's a funny place. I love the Tor and Chalice Well gardens, but the energy in the high street is a bit odd. Sometimes I enjoy poking round the shops, other times it makes me feel a bit weird. Spending the day there is enough, I don't think I could live there. Have any of you been to Totnes in Devon? Also on a Ley line, it has a similar feel to Glastonbury with lotos of quirky shops, but the energy is really strange, I couldn't wait to get away, it actually made me feel quite sick.

Just catching up on all the posts. Welcome to our newcomers. I love how a new thread shakes things up and shifts the energy, it's good to see new faces and old friends.

Trenzalor I love your new tarot deck, beautiful imagery.

Enjoying hearing about pregnancies and birth stories. It seems like such a long time ago now that mine were born (youngest is 21!), but it also feels like yesterday. I've forgotten what the pain was like, but I can still clearly remember what it felt like when they entered the world and that first cry. I'm sure I've told this story before, but DS1 was born on the solar eclipse in 1999, which felt very special and significant.

hilariousnamehere · 04/08/2022 22:00

@Trenzalor that's a gorgeous deck! I've just acquired Hannah Willow's Folktails oracle which is also beautiful - www.hannahwillow.com/product-page/the-folktails-oracle

Never been to Glastonbury but one of my friends lives in Totnes - I've only passed through briefly once but I liked it!

Have had a very frustrating 24 hours, my main PC which I rely on for everything randomly had a breakdown - I was up till nearly 7am fixing it and it's thrown my whole week into disarray. Currently practicing calmness and remembering that I am a photographer not a doctor, and that no one will die if I miss a deadline due to tech issues...

Going to bed shortly and will raid my oils box for something soothing. And did find another beautiful, shimmering magpie feather on the way home so wasn't a total write off of a day!

Hope your evenings are peaceful and magical - and calm!!

speakout · 06/08/2022 07:16

Good morning sisters.
So good to see such ennergy on our new thread, welcome also to new friends.
I am loving these decks, there seems such an explosion of so many beautiful oracle and Tarot decks. I really have to restrain myself!
I remember in the distant past, long before the internet buying my first Tarot deck in the late 70s. There were one or two "New Age" bookshops in the city, and each carried only two or three types of deck. It felt very daring carrying home my tightly wrapped purchase home in the bus.
Now we have hundreds of decks to choose from, the internet has changed the way we live so much- given us all here the opportunity to connect for one!
It is a cool 11 degrees here this morning, I will totally resist the though to switch on my heating! A quick hot shower will suffice.

HillsBesideTheSea · 06/08/2022 07:51

Good morning Speakout
Also loving the decks. A while back i went to a magical store and they literally had a wall of shelves of all kinds of decks. My mind couldn't quite comprehend what my eyes were seeing. I have plans to go back at some point.

Up early this morning (well early for this night owl) I was going to head over to a pilates class but it is fully booked so i think that i am going to go play in the dirt for a little bit. I have beans that are invading next door that need restraining and a number of house plants that need repotting. Unfortunately it is not the kinda weather for laundry on the line. But a little house and kitchen magic is definitely in order I think

Retsina24 · 06/08/2022 07:56

Good morning.
I've been busy reading lots of the previous threads and it's so strange as I now feel like I know some of you. What a wonderful part of the Internet this is. Thank you for letting me join.

Thank you for those who advised on my DS's anxieties on the run up to our holiday. I have collected and cleansed some of my favourite crystals, bought some essential oils and spent some time quietly 'sending' my positive thoughts out to him.

Looking forward to becoming a regular here if that's OK.
Have a lovely day. )O(

Fashiontatts · 06/08/2022 07:58

Good morning all!

I've really enjoyed reading everyone's posts this last few days - so thank you very much for having me. I have always felt a little lost without people to speak to about anything spiritual/magickal in "real life" so to speak, so this thread really has been wonderful to get involved in.

@Trenzalor I've never been to Glastonbury (it's quite a trip from home!) but would like to visit one day, just to experience it! I've always thought I'd like to see it.

The tarot decks are absolutely beautiful @Trenzalor @hilariousnamehere - I've never personally owned any tarot or studied it, but i do enjoy to look at them as they're so pretty and appeal to the art lover in me! And so many diverse types of artwork to choose from, I love that you can see which ones pull you in.

@VioletCharlotte wow, born on a solar eclipse... that has got to be significant! Mine are only still v young, but I don't think you ever forget those precious first moments.

@hilariousnamehere I hope your pc troubles are sorted and you're almost caught up!

Also 11 degrees here this morning @speakout (I wonder if we're not too far from each other) but calm and overcast. The typical day I'd load the kids into the car and go to the beach for some stone hunting... but alas, prior planned visitors have put paid to that today! I've poured a large coffee and will do a v quick yoga practice when I get the little ones settled for half hour of (relative) peace!

I recently decided to make a bit of a change in life, and should receive the decision or whether I've been successful or not next week at some point... I'd be grateful if anyone could send some good/positive energy intentions my way or keep me in your thoughts for some positive vibes ✨

Hope everyone has a blessed Saturday!

Fashiontatts · 06/08/2022 08:02

@Retsina24 I've been doing the same, I know exactly what you mean. It's been such good reading - amazing to find such a supportive group of like minded people.

speakout · 06/08/2022 08:03

HillsBesideTheSea I love your idea of playing in the earth.
When my kids were very young they would dash into the kitchen for a dessert spoon, flying out to the garden
with a "Going digging! exclamation.
They would always find treasure,
empty snail shells, insects,
interesting stones, tree roots. They picked up my love of growing too, we always had projects on the go, for a few years we made pea wigwams, with a giant variety of pea, growing around wigwams large enough to contain a couple of small people.
So the pea wigwams were both a shelter and a buffet meal, they would squirrel themselves inside with a fisttful of pea pods to eat.

Fab op. I visited Rosslyn a few years ago. What an amazing place, those carvings, mind-blowing, so spiritual and other worldly and the area is something else. I picked up on some very unusual vibes there. I'm not a proper pagan/wiccan but I'm very connected to the earth & nature so tend to lean that way.

speakout · 06/08/2022 08:59

CherryRipe1 Rosslyn is a very special place isn't it.
The chapel is dripping with pagan symbols and carvings of dragons, green men even Mayan and South American symbols- which were carved in the 1400s, so quite amazing. It is also an area full of neolithic remnants too, rock carvings, spirals and seriphs.
The chapel sits high above a thickly wooded gorge and is full of magical energy.
And it is very possible to have the whole place to yourself, and the narrow path running alongside the path gives access to the Hawthornden caves and carvings. I feel this has been a sacred place for a very long time.

My OH works in the village, which is only a few miles away from our home.
There are sacred places everywhere in the UK, large visitor numbers can have a negative impact on the very thing people come to see.
So I prefer lesser known places where I can be alone with the earth.

OP posts:
Fashiontatts · 06/08/2022 09:18

Thank you @speakout 🕯

@CherryRipe1 Rosslyn is such a wonderful place... just incredible energy. I haven't been for a good number of years, despite living not too far from it. Perhaps a return visit is required soon! 🙂

HillsBesideTheSea · 06/08/2022 10:29

Handfuls of pea pods are the best. Not sure why but they never seem to make it in from the garden into the house Hmm Grin

I am currently batch cooking and kitchen taming. Need to raid the teenager's room for dishes at some point but i am not judging him as apparently with life so busy i have been a teenager and collected rather a number of coffee cups in mine Blush feels good to get this done though.
