Any atheists out there who are drawn to the aesthetic of church?

I was a Roman Catholic, but totally struggled with believing in God etc. I gave up going to church years ago, but I still love the Catholic Church, hymns, music, the buildings, prayers, incense etc. I wasn't interested in the social side of things so didn't get anything out of that.

I know some people will say that it's God trying to draw me in, but honestly, I can't believe in any of that even though I've tried I can't force myself and I don't even like other people let alone love them 😄

Anybody else experienced this?

For those of you who are atheists but miss the atmosphere and spiritual calm and support of church - you do know that you would all be welcome to attend church?
My own congregation includes atheists and a Buddhist, and my lesbian minister made them all welcome!
Church is not just a place for the smug and good, convinced they are already "saved". It's a place for the doubting, the troubled, the humble, those with questions seeking answers, sinners seeking forgiveness, the unloved seeking love and acceptance.
All are loved and welcomed by God even if they deny His existence. And each carries away a little bit of that calm, and peace and comfort with them when they leave each week.
Please don't self exclude from a place that can give you so much.

My experience is the opposite - Catholic churches seem less friendly. People didn't ever speak to each other after the service, and it was all a bit lacklustre. I enjoy singing but at the Catholic churches I've been to the hymns were just mumbled by embarrassed-seeming people. I was surprised the first time I went to another church and found it so different. But of course that may vary dramatically by place.

@Babdoc your last post was really lovely. Would you mind sharing the type of church you attend?

That's not to say they're great of course, what with the sex abuse stuff

Appallingly that's not limited to the Catholics even though they've had the worst press.

Takes a lot too though...

I'm not religious, but work for a faith based charity. It's at the moderate end of the church, but I find I like a lot of the behaviours the religion brings, while having no belief myself. The charity emphasises respect for others and other views, and is one of the more inclusive, diverse and staff centred places I have worked. We start most meetings with a prayer (not obliged to join in) and most are for us to work well together, be respectful and try to achieve our goals. It sets a good tone. Since working there I have a more positive views of religion while not feeling pressured to change my views. It's just my experience but it has been very positive. Also love a good carol service!
