Just popping in to wish you all solstice blessings. Brighter days are coming to the land, and hopefully to all of us small creatures that depend on it.

How lovely.

I feel much restored, after a healing guided meditation, solstice ceremony and candles. I bought some blocks of bird suet on your advice
, I have some giant trees just a few feet outside my garden fence ( my sycamore sisters) so pushing suet into high cracks in the trees seems a fantastic idea. So thanks for that. I was also reading that coconut oil works well too- very inexpensive in some shops, like LIDL and high in calories for hungry birds. And in Winter UK temperatures coconut oil is always solid!

My amazing DH went out and hunted high and low and found a pharmacy that could fill my prescription! So now I can relax, he is prepping dinner and then later I am going to have that bath!

Solstice Blessings to you all. For so many of my friends today seems to be a turning point, after some incredibly difficult times. I feel the feminine energy building strongly.

VioletCharlotte · 21/12/2021 17:43

I saw this post on Facebook earlier and was reminded of it by the image Ogress posted. I really enjoyed reading it so thought I would share it.

At this time of the year, the Winter Solstice, a patriarchal theft by the Church is revealed by the concept of “Father Christmas.” It was stolen from the indigenous shamanic cultures primarily from Siberia and the Nordic countries of Northern Norway, Finland (Lapland), and the Arctic Circle.

Long before Santa and his flying steeds, it was the female reindeer who drew the sleigh of the sun goddess at the Winter Solstice. It was when the pagan traditions of winter were “Christianized” that “Father Christmas” was born.

It was never “Father Christmas” that brought gifts and the return of light at the Winter Solstice—it was “Mother Christmas,” the ancient Deer Mother of old. It was she who once flew through winter’s longest darkest night with the life-giving light of the sun in her horns.

And from the British Isles, Scandinavia, Russia, Siberia, across the land bridge of the Bering Strait, she was a revered spiritual figure associated with fertility, motherhood, regeneration and the rebirth of the sun (the theme of winter solstice).

Her antlers adorned shrines and altars, were buried in ceremonial graves and were worn as shamanic headdresses. Her image was etched in standing stones, woven into ceremonial cloth and clothing, cast in jewelry, painted on drums, and tattooed onto skin.

Reindeer were often shown leaping or flying through the air with neck outstretched and legs flung out fore and aft. Her antlers were frequently depicted as the tree of life, carrying birds, the sun, moon, and stars. And across the northern world, it was the Deer Mother who took flight from the dark of the old year to bring light and life to the new.

Sorry Rudolph, but the male reindeer shed their antlers in the winter, it is only the doe who retains her antlers as she is the one who leads the herds in winter. Ever since the early Neolithic period, the female reindeer was venerated by northern people. She was the “life-giving mother,” the leader of the herds upon which they depended for survival, and they followed the reindeer migrations for milk, food, clothing and shelter.

One of these cultures that honored the “life-giving mother, “the Deer Mother was the Sami.

For the Sami, the indigenous people of the Nordic countries, Beaivi is the name for the Sun Goddess associated with motherhood, the fertility of plants and the reindeer. At Winter Solstice, warm butter (a symbol of the sun) was smeared on doorposts as a sacrifice to Beaivi so that she could gain strength and fly higher and higher into the sky. Beaivi was often shown accompanied by her daughter in an enclosure of reindeer antlers and together they returned green and fertility to the land.

Many other winter goddesses in northern legends were associated with the solstice. They took to the skies led by a bevy of flying animals. One tells of the return of Saule, the Lithuanian and Latvian goddess of the sun. She flew across the heavens in a sleigh pulled by horned reindeer and threw pebbles of amber (symbolizing the sun) into chimneys.

While many historical explorations of the pagan origins of Christmas observe the link between Santa’s garb and the red and white amanita mushroom ingesting shamans, few mention that it was the female shamans who originally wore red and white costumes trimmed with fur, horned headdresses or red felt hats! The ceremonial clothing worn by medicine women healers of Siberia and Lapland, was green and white with a red peaked hat, curled toed boots, reindeer mittens, fur lining and trim.

Considering that most of the shamans in this region were originally women, it is likely that their traditional wear is the true source for Santa’s costume. And it is also very likely that they were the first to take shamanic flight with the reindeer on winter’s darkest night.

Interestingly Norway has Nissen, Julenissen this time of year. When a bowl of rice porridge (with cinamon) was placed out for them so that they would help around the farms and homes in the coming years. If it was not done they would be mischievous and things would go missing/be problematic. They were known as Tomte in Sweden, Tottnu in Finland. Also known as Tomtenissen.

It is always an interesting worm hole to investigate if you are so inclined this time of the year. I believe there may be corrolations with the Brownies? but I am not familiar with Brownies so cannot confirm this.

HillsBesideTheSea · 21/12/2021 17:54

Sorry I miss spelt It should be Tonttu for finland.

EsmeGythaMagrat · 21/12/2021 18:17

Solstice Blessings sisters - the wheel turns!

BlankTimes · 21/12/2021 19:34

I want to personally mention everyone who has contributed to this day but I need to go and cook dinner, so if you're not mentioned by name, please know that you're included, whether you're new or have posted here for a long time. Halloween Smile

Wow Speakout your dream, just wow!. I echo Aerwyna's wise words.

Today seems to have been a little 'gritty' for many of us, time to evaluate that when we've had chance to find a bit of equilibrium. I guess a bumpy road is more interesting and memorable than a smooth one.

Did anyone else watch the Maeshowe video? I thought it was really good, Plenty in it for people who were new to the concept and plenty for those who are familiar with it too.

Violet that's beautiful about the female reindeer and the sleigh of the sun goddess. It reminded me of an amazing artifact from Bronze Age Denmark, the Trundholm Sun Chariot drawn by a horse, full explanation, pics, video etc. here en.natmus.dk/historical-knowledge/denmark/prehistoric-period-until-1050-ad/the-bronze-age/the-sun-chariot/

I nipped out to get last minute groceries and had a real treat. Wish I'd had my camera to capture a black, a golden and a white pheasant all sitting in a line on a field gate, and then the two red kites that whirled and spiralled in the higher sky.
On many occasions, we've seen two white pheasant within a few miles of each other and several black ones, but only usually one per trip, but seeing that trio was something else!

hilariousnamehere · 22/12/2021 01:39

Late solstice blessings, sisters - I celebrated with my tiny coven of three after we all miraculously had negative lateral flows and it has been the most restorative few hours I've had in months and months.

Came home and danced with my little black cat and my security camera caught it so that was a happy moment, and then I conked out on the sofa so am just flying in to wish you all happiness and peace and calm as the light returns, and I'll come back and do proper replies soon - I love the wisdom and unexpected learning that rolls through this thread even when we're all having stressful times!

speakout · 22/12/2021 07:37

hilariousnamehere I love the sound of your solstice celebration- dancing with a cat sounds perfect.
VioletCharlotte that is fascinating- another work hole to dive into- I was reading something similar yesterday about the female deer goddess of Nordic Lands. I knew that sources of father christmas were far more complex than some dull old saint and coca cola.
Female energy divinity is in urgent need to heal this planet- the church has done catastrophic damage in turning this planet into a male serving world, and part of the reason we are in so much difficicult right now. christians claim that their god gives out free crutches- but usually to people who have fully functioning legs. Gaslighting on a global scale. The churches block personal growth and power, because compliance is what it needs to control others.
It comes as no surprise to watch the countries who are the "grown ups" are the ones where christianty is being abandoned, giving space and freedom for women to take a seat- with men- and reconstruct ideas of civilization.
VioletCharlotte I have a large twisted piece of foraged wood/tree root I picked up in the forest, I has some spirals and some parts like antlers, but with a feeling of great female energy. It is drying off in my porch, but I plan to turn it into some sculpture or table decoration. I will certainly dig deeper into the history of shamanic yule goddesses.
I love Sami music, this is often a track I like to play in the early morning to set my day with a gentle uplifting tone.
Hillsbeside the sea another fascinating topic about house elves, or Tutelary spirits as they are sometimes known, they exist in many cultures and countries, Northern Europe, Scandinavian cultures but also further afield to other continents, Africa, the Americas and Asia too. I have had a Scottish Brownie live with me for many years and the character Dobby from Harry Potter is also a house elf. Keeping these little ones sweet will give you help around the house.
Another short but entertaining video about house elves and folklore is here- with some delightful paintings and images, only 6 minutes long but worth a watch- but will open yet more wormholes!
Off for a yoga session this morning, and need to buy more candles.
I am trying to avoid large shops now though as the scramble is out there now, so will just be visiting small local shops for supplies.

This just popped up on my Facebooke feed- underlining the information shared by VioletCharlotte
"We can learn from the wisdom of the past, a time when humans understood more clearly our tiny part in the cosmic web of life and the necessity of honoring the earth and all its life. At this time when the shadow side of human nature once again seeks dominance through naked self-interest and the promotion of fear and hatred of others, let us remember and honor the Ancient’s belief in the Reindeer Goddess, the Sun Goddess, and the Mother’s Night when She both flies high in the sky and dives deep into the earth to nourish and promise a renewal of life in the coming spring. Though it may be dark now, the light will return.

I sat in bed this morning watching the sunrise, it couldn't have been more perfect.

I'm feeling refreshed after a deep sleep. The solstice celebration went ahead last night, and it was fabulous. We started with a deep meditation, followed by a candle and fire ritual, drank cacao, chanted and finished with a gong bath. I'm so grateful that this was able to go ahead. I didn't realise how important these celebrations are to me until last year when they were taken away.

Speakout you're so right about the 'grown up' countries being the ones who reject Christianity. There's so much we could learn from them. Unfortunately the patriarchy still reigns supreme here. I do feel though, that this is a pivotal time and we're in the brink of transition. We may not see it in our lifetime, but I do feel there's an opportunity to make things better for our children.

Hilariousnamehere I love the thought of you dancing with your cat, that really made me smile. I do the same with my dog.

Blanktimes thank you for sharing the link about the sun chariot, that's so interesting. And how wonderful to see the pheasants. I saw a hare last night, that was pretty special too.

Apologies to anyone I haven't mentioned, I could be here all day! I live reading all your posts, and I love all the chatter and bustle in our witches kitchen at the money, it's so uplifting.

Solstice greetings, sisters. It’s turned cold here - fog and frost seem to be the weather settings at the moment!

speakout · 22/12/2021 14:09

A stunning photograph VioletCharlotte, it really captures the mood and essence of your beautiful morning. I do think these are pivotal times. We need female and male energy to swing back into a balanced state in order for the earth to find healing.
Cold and fogy here too Trenzalor becoming quite dark already although it is only 2pm.
I am quite glad we are having only close family for the season, means I don't have to pimp up the house ( or myself) to a huge degree. It will be warm and cosy, tidy(ish) but no one on ceremony!
Extended family have decided not to visit next week, we usually do a fancy lunch, but would mean four households mixing, and two very elderly and vulnerable people.
So OH will cook a meal, - a buffet with a home made cooked ham,, salads, home made pickles, crusty bread, salad, new potatoes ready to be re-heated in the microwave, crackers, napkins, desserts, prosecco, box it up and take it over to the in laws for them to enjoy.
Sad that yet again we have to take these measures.

Another day of tea and candles here!

We ventured to do the Christmas food shop - I need a stiff (large measure!) drink to recover. I do usually get as much as possible from smaller local traders, but Covid restriction shopping just stresses me so it was a big trip round the supermarket.

When I worked in retail I had a unit in a supermarket and these days before the 25th I would see families come through with 3 trolleys full of food. It was baffling, though I suppose if you have the extended family over it makes sense and also wanting to hunker down and not go out - but the day after Boxing Day these same people would be back in buying staggering quantities of food again!
I really cannot fathom it. They must have wasted so much. I resisted the urge to buy several items today because it's such an old habit to always have certain things 'because it is Christmas' but in reality I don't enjoy eating them! I'm honestly not a fan of mince pies for example - I like two or three across the month but that's all.

Anyway, I shall venture out on Christmas Eve for fresh bread and that's it.

Home now, fires stoked up and warming us through. My youngest DS is engaged in painting an airfix tank he has built with his dad. I collect my teenager from his dad's tomorrow. I have some reading I want to do. Holiday mode engaged!

speakout · 22/12/2021 16:46

i know how you feel- I am just back for a few items from ALDI- it was mayhem., just feels like people buying such huge random piles of things for the sake of it, al those feelings Iknow go alog with it- how will we cope without bread sauce- help can't find cranberries, people fighting over snowman printed toilet roll.
Do we really need candles with a "pigs in blankets" fragrance?? I saw them today www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/uk-news/aldi-shoppers-horrified-smell-169-22471115

Makes my haven of home and the simplicity of normality feel a real sanctuary. I doubt I will be visiting many shops in the next few days.
So yes, I know have holifday mode engaged- May have to pop out for esentials like cat food and a yoga class, but otherwise, just makig simmer pots and reading.

Good evening, sisters. Life has been rather chaotic this end so I will catch up properly with the pages I’ve missed but I just wanted to wish you all a blessed Solstice. Let the light return!

HillsBesideTheSea · 22/12/2021 21:28

If anything is to smell like pigs in blankets it is going to be actual pigs in blankets and I am going to eat them, they are one of my favourite bits of the christmas dinner Blush
Candle makers are weird with some of the scents they come up with imo

I hope everyone manages to find some calm today.
Everything bought, I plan to make some birdfeeding garlands and tidy the house a little, prep some food, but mostly just enjoy some peace.
I have a body balance class ths morning, the last day of my deep goddesss self care week- yesterday was yoga class and a massage and my local salon. She managed to iron out some knots in my back, but a lot of tension there. It was very soothing. I have meditated every day too, even a 10 minute guided meditation seems to have a really profound effect on my stress levels and any anxiety I am feeling- a practice I want to continue.
Take away for dinner tonight in our house, keeps the clear up and wash up to a minimum in the next few days.
I look forward to hearing snippets of everyone's christmas eve.

OP posts:
queenrollo · 24/12/2021 08:37

I was woken early by one of my cats coming onto the bed for cuddles. This is actually unusual, as they rarely venture upstairs. They are always very affectionate in the run up to Christmas though!
Last minute trip out needed for fresh bread and couple of bits we couldn't get the other day.
I haven't yet iced the cake, but as it is unlikely to get the first slice cut for a few days I might actually leave it to fill some time on Boxing Day.
My 8 year old got up about 20 mins ago and cheerily greeted me, but he is the right kind of excited - not too hyper.

I spent yesterday getting muddy and wet doing lots of outdoor jobs. Chickens in lockdown so the run needed freshening up with straw and I topped up their feeders and water and put some new treats in too. Stocked up with kindling for fires, got on top of laundry etc.

It is tradition for me to have a long hot bath on Christmas Eve so that will be this afternoon, and I'm going to cook the turkey crown and gammon today to make tomorrow less hectic in the kitchen (DH has bought himself a small piece of venison)

queenrollo · 24/12/2021 11:31

Last minute shop done! Was actually wonderful, I drove to the town I grew up in and parked to walk up to the supermarket (car park is tiny and mayhem!) and I saw lots of old friends. A girl I used to babysit, who now has three of her own children. I walked past the town church and remembered walking along the wall outside it, holding my mum's hand. I go to town often, but the energy today was fab and full of happy christmas childhood memories.

Am home now and time to truly settle in for the next few days.

Aerwyna · 24/12/2021 12:22

deep goddesss self care week
I love that speakout and it gladdens my heart to of you doing this.

Loving hearing snippets of the day, and your magical trip to town queenrollo

A day off for me today, short shifts over the weekend but working with animals so will all be part of the magic. An indulgent soak in a salt bath for me too today, also a tradition for me over Christmas, usually followed by putting on new pyjamas! I’ll go and spend a couple of hours doing some bits for my mum later and then a quiet evening at home with ‘party food’ I’ve been fancying cheese and pineapple on sticks and mini cocktail sausages- a bit of an 80’s birthday party vibe going on!

Tomorrow will be spilt between work, visiting and home but all in short bursts and at a steady pace. DS will cook Christmas dinner later on. Hoping there’s time for our traditional game of scrabble. It really is the little things isn’t it.

Whatever everyone’s plans are, my wish for my sisters is that you find peace and magic amongst it all

Midwinter blessings to all ❄️

I have had a body balance session this morning, then popped into Aldi- all the super 6 veg are 9p a bag, picked up several to go feed the forest animals and deer this afternoon. Also some reduced cranberries- I have made a small string as a test to see if any birds are tempted.

Yesterday was a walk into the very muddy woods and today we went to the allotment to dig up parsnips and potatoes. The Brussels aren’t ready yet so I’ve bought some for now. Today will be food prep to lessen time spent in the kitchen tomorrow and this evening is our Christmas Eve buffet. I started it when the eight year old was small and it’s become a tradition. It’s just the four of us. The children have been hyper all week and I’m struggling with that and tiredness. At least I know it’s autism related now and can be easy on myself for struggling with the constant noise and lack of peace.
