Any secular Jewish mums--Hanukkah question

I'm from a Jewish background, my DH isn't. I was given a hideous, brainwash-style orthodox religious education which I hated every moment of from age 5. However, I know it doesn't have to be that way. I'd love to take DS to a Hannukah party or something similar where he can hear songs, see the candles, and maybe I can meet some like-minded parents, who see their cultural heritage as something to celebrate, even if they aren't believers and/or have married 'out'. I'm in N London.

It says in my diary that first day Chanukah is wednesday 8th. Do I light the first candle tuesday evening or weds evening ?

And what is correct protocol for my boys, do they open their advent calendars before or after we light the menorah

crunchie · 30/11/2004 16:04

Kayleigh I think you start on Tuesday evening, and all I can say is that the Christmas tree better not go up until after Channukkah

And in our house Advent is done before school, Channukkah before bed - so no clash there

crunchie · 30/11/2004 16:18

Just checked online, it is the evening of the 7th

Arabica · 30/11/2004 19:10

Kayleigh · 01/12/2004 10:23

calling lisalisa - are you there ???? are you making the restaurant booking or shall I ?

So far: Kayleigh - 4, Cori - 3, Arabica - 3, Prettycandles - ? Lisalisa- ?

Slice, 8 Princes Parade, Golders Green Road, NW11. Tel 8458 9483

crunchie, thanks for that. We can't do advent before school as I am a mean mummy and i'm not having them eating chocolate in the morning. Where would it all end

the xmas tree has to go up before end of chanukah in our house as my birthday is the 9th and i just love the house all decorated for my birthday. I'm such a kid ! Maybe we'll compromise and not turn the xmas tree lights on until the chanukah candles have gone out

Kaysleighbells · 01/12/2004 11:56

we are meeting at restaurant at 5:30 - or whatever time it opens - i will find out. So that should be easier.

Why don't we CAT each other with mobile nos and then we can speak to each other and look out for each other. Makes life easier as well if anyone can't make it on day for whatever reason.

Kaysleighbells · 01/12/2004 12:08

oh and really sorry to hear you're not feeling well lisalisa.

lisalisa, we have had this conversation . Look further down the thread. The menorah isn't being lit till 7 and we said that it was too late for the kids to eat after so we would eat before.

Is it coming back ??!!!

We'll be 4.

Will we all be using buggies? If so, how about tieing a bit of tinsel to the handle to identify ourselves?

Where is Slice?

Kaysleighbells · 02/12/2004 10:45

thanks prettycandles. We won't have a buggy but I could tie tinsel round my boys necks

Slice is the other end of Golders Green Road away from the station. Not sure where exactly but lisalisa says it's too far to walk back to Station so must be on the parade near to North circular end of Golders Green Road.

Am so looking forward to this and meeting you all.

doh! You're not the only one around here having senior moments right now, LL! I read that message and responded to it .

prettycandles · 02/12/2004 13:22

I think I might do something terrible to my infant - she grabbed the mouse and 'posted'! Talented or horrible? What I meant to go on to say was that I hope it works out with your dh and that you'll be able to come, LL, I'd really love to meet you.

lisalisa, I hope you are ok, and you can come either with or without your dh. Am so looking forward to meeting you.

Plese don't worry about any of us being indiscreet. Anything said on here stays between us.

Arabica · 03/12/2004 22:37

No worries LisaLisa. Can't wait to meet everyone. We're buggy-less too but at the mo I always wear a hat to hide my bad haircut, so maybe I will tie some tinsel around it! My DS is really looking forward to the candles. Because I told him about chocolate Hanukkah gelt.

I received the LUbavitch mag in the post on friday. Apparantly ( they say) free doughnuts are given out after the lighting and there is a canter ( singer) at every lighting singing moatzur ( the traditional hanukah song) so should be realy nice.

If you still want more after this Lubavitch run an excellent programme called Chanukah wonderland which is really great - there#s an interactive cave where you can be a maccabee and plot stratedgy against the greeks, a doughnut making workshop, all sorts of arts and crafts and general fun. Its every chanukah afternoon ( so after shcool) and also on sat night ( finishes at 9.00pm so theroetically if anyone has older children they may like to visit after the candle lighting ) and on sunday afternoon .

I think it may be enough for sat night for my kids although I think dd1 aged 8 would probaly still be up to it.

lisalisa · 06/12/2004 10:18

Forgot to say its also on Golders Green Raod!!!

Arabica · 06/12/2004 21:21

Kaysleigh, did you contact the restaurant to see if booking was possible? If you haven't been able to call them, would you like me to do it?

TheHollyAndTheTwiglett · 07/12/2004 08:55

Please may I ask a question

Is there any particular order you need to light the candles? I know its shamash (In the middle first) but then do I do it from the left inwards / right inwards / alternate sides each night

Help please
