What is the most spiritually moving place you have been

For me, despite not being Catholic, it was Norte Dame in Paris and the interior of the Sagrada Familia. I especially felt I could feel God's presence in the latter. I'm just interested to hear about other places people have been spiritually moved, doesn't have to be Christian Smile

Byron Bay on Australia East coast. Lies in lay lines, just feels like your breathing different air if that makes sense,

mimibunz · 24/07/2018 20:32

Orcas Island off the coast of Washington state. There was no sound of anything. Complete peace.

I'm a Christian, I've been in some beautiful churches, I always marvel at how cathedrals were built hundreds of years ago, all by hand with none of the machinery we have today.

However the place where I have felt God's presence the most was when I was hiking in a national park in Australia. I'd got up really early and started the walk whilst it was still dark, as I walked I saw the Sun rise and the views and landscape were breathtakingly gorgeous. I was the only person there, it was so peaceful and it felt like I had all God's wonderful creation to myself. It was a pretty special experience.

Carnac in Brittany.

busyboysmum · 24/07/2018 20:41

Swimming with wild dolphins in Israel.

I'm going to look up all these places! Nature wise I felt God's presence looking down the lines of an apple orchard in Dorset near where my grandparents lived. Spent every summer there and felt it everytime I walked through that orchard. I'd forgotten about it until reading all your posts.

Ring of Brodgar and Maeshowe on Orkney.

cattypussclaw · 24/07/2018 20:46

Jerusalem. And I'm a confirmed atheist. There was something the place that moved me.

dovegrey18 · 24/07/2018 20:49

Mecca, Saudi Arabia 🕋

Within

It's a really sad thing to think, now, but the Bel temple in Palmyra, Syria which I visited before the war.

It was used for thousands of years for pagan, then Roman, then Christian, then Muslim worship.

It was stunningly beautiful, but I also felt so moved by the idea of all those people of changing faiths worshiping in the same place.

Now it's been destroyed by people who hate that idea.

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/07/2018 21:37

Chalice well in Glastonbury.

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 24/07/2018 21:41

Lindisfarne - it was a hot summer's day in full tourist season so noisy and busy but it was still a thin place.

rebelrosie12 · 24/07/2018 21:44

The steppe of Mongolia. The most moving place I've ever seen. And the moment that I decided there couldn't possibly be a God... and became what I now know to be a humanist.
It's funny because people talk about seeing these amazing landscapes and finding God...it did the opposite to me.

Zipadeedoodah2 · 24/07/2018 21:45

Ring of Brodgar for me too - an amazing place

speakout · 24/07/2018 21:48

Borobudur in Java or Gijantia in Gozo.

ThinkingCat · 24/07/2018 21:50

I was going to say the interior of the Sagrada Familia before I saw your post OP!

Also Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden

mavydoes · 24/07/2018 21:51

Fatima.

Not a total devout Catholic but when we pulled into the town and I saw the roundabout with the three children in it I welled up.

That and then walking into the massive stone field at the Basilica and my jaw dropping.

Claredemoon · 24/07/2018 22:03

@ThinkingCat it's gorgeous isn't it Smile

@falaffels it's terrible, I wonder if one day they can recreate it

Thank you for all the replies, many of these places I haven't heard of so very interesting to look them up.

I find the following places deeply moving and visiting them brings me an immense sense of calm and peace. I feel refreshed after visiting. The only one which was not constructed as a spiritual place is the No. 3 Covered slip at Chatham - but it is a cathedral to light and industry.

  1. Clava Cairns
  2. Castlerigg stone circle
  3. No. 3 Covered slip at Chatham Dockyard
  4. San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice
  5. Reykjavik Cathedral
  6. St Margaret's Chapel at Edinburgh Castle.

A remote farmhouse on the west coast of Ireland on top of a large hill overlooking the Atlantic at 3am on a clear night. Billions of stars it was awe inspiring.

RiverTam · 24/07/2018 22:13

Sherborne Abbey. It’s the only place I have come close to having any kind of spiritual experience.

SmilingButClueless · 24/07/2018 22:19

It’s a toss-up between Castlerigg stone circle and the north rim of the Grand Canyon (not the bit where all the day trips visit - we walked from the lodge down a track, started to hear the wind whistling and then the canyon was just suddenly there)

Chamomile · 24/07/2018 22:20

South Harris. I'm there now. Just me and the seals, the mountains and the sea.

weegiemum · 24/07/2018 22:23

Another vote for Lindisfarne. Also Iona.
